Right but the royals existence has nothing to do with colonialism, England had royals long, long before colonialism was even a dream of theirs.

Colonialism exists because of the royals, and the royals benefitted from it massively.

the 700 years during which England was a coherent political entity with no aspirations of being an empire...
When was this? Pre-Roman invasion?

The current "Firm" has been operating on the "displace local people and steal their stuff" business model since at least 1066. England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, North America... - The Norman/Plantagenet crime family and their direct descendants and associates have all done very nicely out of it.

At least the last lady (and her father) had the job during the only time in the past 1000 years that they actually stopped trying to grow the traditional family business - so, three cheers for that!

So - to summarise:

The old lady that just died was quite a remarkable lady. Privileged as fuck. But good on her - I really don’t have a bad word to say about her personally. And I truly admire the way she did her job. She was perfect in her constitutional role.

Her husband was a racist prick.

Her second son appears to be a complete fuckwit.

I don’t mind our new King. I don’t want to have a beer with him. But he acknowledges that global warming is a existential threat. That is what I want in a King.

Not a musician, but Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman in many cartoons and games (especially the best ones), passed away, 66 years young.

Christine McVie, the longtime co-lead vocalist, keyboardist, and songwriter for Fleetwood Mac, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the age of 79. A cause of death was not available, but McVie’s family said she died at a hospital “following a short illness.”

The band confirmed McVie’s death in a note shared on social media. “There are no words to describe our sadness at the passing of Christine McVie. She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure. She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life. We were so lucky to have a life with her. Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so very missed.”

In its statement, McVie’s family said, “She was in the company of her family. We kindly ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this extremely painful time, and we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was loved universally. RIP Christine McVie.”

Hi All,

It pains me to let you know that my good friend, collaborator, and all around best person Wayne "Evil-E" Gamble died suddenly and unexpectedly from a stroke the week before Xmas. Wayne mostly submitted on his own as Evil-E and as part of the Seamus Collective. I don't know what to say besides those of us who were close to him are devastated, and even more so, his wife Stacy. While this is certainly a loss to the Songfight community, Wayne touched many lives as a friend, band mate, and music teacher.

There is a Go Fund Me set up here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/wayne-gamble

This is hugely sad. Wayne put so much good energy into the world. It was very moving to see so many of his students posting on his Facebook page saying that he had a big positive influence on their lives that they would never forget.

Condolences Ken. Would I have met Wayne in Santa Cruz in '06'? I feel like I did?

And in a similar vein one of my musical friends passed away last week, the wonderful Dan McGurk. Pepper Jane - I assume you knew Dan too? We bonded as late-middle aged punks and always had plans to start a local Modern Lover's cover band. Sadly it never happened.

Wasn’t he at SF Van Nuys? Along with Edge of LA, who also passed several years ago, but I might be getting folks confused.

Yes, I think Wayne was there for Van Nuys, this seems to back up my vague recollection:

viewtopic.php?p=201792#p201792
HOLLYWOOD, CA – February 4, 2006 – The year’s first SongFight.org Presents… show of 2006 will be held at Sound Arena Rehearsal Studios in Van Nuys on Saturday, February 4, 2006 starting at 8:00 p.m.

...

Several acts from out of town will appear as well, including Seamus and the Pockets (San Diego), Evil-E (San Luis Obispo) ...
I don't think he was at Santa Cruz but I could be wrong. It's not far from San Luis Obispo so it's possible he was there.

Aw, man. Beck was one of the all time greats. Forget all those deedle-weedlers, nobody played like him. Listen, and watch, him play. You just can't do what he did. Not a big hit maker, didn't matter. 78 aint no kid, but a shocker. R.I.P.

Ah, it was a tough year generally; but it saddens the Anglophiles amongst us to say Terry Hall was a great loss, I found myself bursting into tears while dancing to a FB3 song at a club just yesterday. As they say, no age.

I would link a song but I have no idea if the various copyrights would allow American colleagues to watch. Oh, WTF, posiibly the best song of the 80s, laydees - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qi7BXqmYxiw

Also, Alan Rankine from the Associates. They're none of them left, people!
