Lynn Shelton has died from a blood disorder at 54 years old. She directed some of my favourite films and television. :(

Utterly fantastic actor Ian Holm, who's been in a ton of incredible and classic movies and was also a renowned stage performer, has passed at 88 from illness related to Parkinson's. :(

Not sure why it didn’t make the news (OK, I know why it didn’t make the news), but I just read recently that Annie Glenn died last month (COVID). Arguably did more for the American space effort than her husband John and just an incredible advocate for humanity. Rest in peace.

Turning it to be about me: John Glenn was the speaker at my college graduation ceremony, which for some reason C-SPAN has on their Web site: https://www.c-span.org/video/?123365-1/ ... mmencement

Back in April, prolific versatile brilliant pop songwriter Adam Schlesinger passed from COVID-19 complications. There had been some talk of a tribute cover fight happening here. I don't think that happened yet? A whole bunch of folks close to Adam did their own tribute cover album, it's up on BandCamp, proceeds go to the MusicCares COVID-19 Relief Fund.

I don't think anyone mentioned Vera Lynn? 103. Not bad. Also has a great song to play just like John Prine did when he passed. We'll meet again...

I remember seeing St. Elmo’s Fire as a teenager in the mid 80s and it made a huge impact on me. The breakup scene where they argue about who gets which albums in particular has stuck with me. NO SPRINGSTEEN IS LEAVING THIS HOUSE.

Rest in peace.

I picked up a Vera Lynn cd from the library leftovers sale last year and have never listened. I only knew the name from Pink Floyd. Guess I'm gonna listen to now. (I had no idea she was still alive.)

It's a shame the news is mostly focusing on his Batman films when he made so many more amazing movies which are worth watching. And some people have a fondness for his Batman movies too!

I haven't seen that many of his films but of the ones I have seen, Flatliners is my favorite. Falling Down was also interesting from a standpoint of a movie whose message ended up being incredibly different than what it seemed like it was going to be.

Ennio Morricone has died.

We got to see him a few years ago in Dublin and it was wonderful.

Surprised that one didn’t get more headlines. I grew up watching reruns of the Dick Van Dyke show. What a legend. Rest in peace.

Dang, more fresh news, country legend Charlie Daniels just passed away apparently:

EDIT: Apparently Daniels's politics were not anything I'd personally agree with I guess. YMMV.

Erin's sister's father-in-law passed away last night.

I still read Slashdot, as hard as that may be to believe, and that obit got posted there. Erin's sister had just texted us about it a couple hours ago.

Oh, dang, I was actually somewhat familiar with his work; I spent several months in grad school obsessed with Ramsey numbers and trying to brute-force a solution to R[5,5]. (I determined it was 42, but then the laptop I had the work on got stolen before I could verify it. Some sorta cosmic conspiracy, I tells ya.)

The pool of living folks with an Erdős number of 1 is rapidly shrinking.

May his memory be a blessing.

We lost two major figures from the civil rights movement of the 60s:

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/17/politics ... index.html
https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/17/us/ct-vi ... index.html
https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/18/us/john- ... index.html

We still need a civil rights movement today, IMO.
