Re: The Great Big Songfighter Birthday Thread
That sounds lovely... I love tiki bars! Forbidden Island in Alameda is my all-time favorite--the drinks are so good!--although actually, now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever been to Trader Vic's despite it being THE historic Bay Area tiki bar.

I love Forbidden Island too! Fun story about that place from a couple months back here:

We really have an embarrassment of tiki riches in the SF/Oakland area! We actually also checked out a tiki bar in SF the week before, called "Last Rites", which was a small bar with awesome unusual decor. It was more jungly and less kitchy than the classic style. It's themed like you are in the wreckage of a plane crash in the jungle on a tropical island with some some spooky stuff around like giant skulls on the walls. The back and overhang of the bar are a section of a plane fuselage and some of the seats are repurposed plane seats, and they play pyschedelic rock from the 60s/70s.

Re: The Great Big Songfighter Birthday Thread
ohhh cool. Tiki bar outing for SFL2020?!!
I remember I also liked that one on Nob Hill where it rains inside. Tonga Room? I think I heard that it closed.
is Spats still around? I guess that was technically a tiki bar, right? That place sucked.

Tiki outing would be awesome. The Tonga Room is the other old time classic, and it's not closed, it's still going strong. Spats closed for a long time but has been reopen the last couple years in a new less sucky incarnation although it's still a bit too close to the campus and students for an old codger like me to want to go there much outside of summer time.

I am disappointed that The Tonga Room's website uses a .com domain instead of being a semi-legitimate usage of .to.

I am not disappointed in you capitalizing on the exceedingly rare opportunity to make that joke. Well done!

Yeah, pretty much! I entered my first ones when I was 16-17, came back briefly at 20, then disappeared for a decade
Thanks to you and owl!

I forgot to mention, I turned 40 on the 22nd. Or maybe I just wanted to forget it happened. Either one. lol
