I just heard of these charming people tonight - I don't know how well known they are over there stateside:

but they were featured tonight on an Australian satire show -"The Chaser", in a sketch that I'm guessing may find its way around the internet.

Head nutbag Fred Phelps was being interviewed by the wonderful Charles Firth - who mid-interview started fondling Mr Phelps' buttocks - much to the displeasure of Mr Phelps' placard waving nutbag friends. Very, very funny

i think we've covered this before in the politics and other crap thread. but yeah, they're notorious assholes.

apparently, my brother and his friends ran into these people yelling and telling them they're going to hell at a giant porn shop in kentucky. he said they had the "god hates fags" signs and they were calling them "fags."

I advise everyone to spend less than 2 minutes on that site. Otherwise they win.

They also say that God hates Canada. I don't like those guys. What are they thinking?

They were probably thinking (quite reasonably) that God hates Bryan Adams, poutine and ice-hockey - then just added two and two together...

What's wrong with hockey? It's fast paced, exciting, and people get crushed against boards. There are no better sports out there, unless you get to the really brutal ones like rugby and lacrosse, which I'm pretty sure is Canada's national sport. It's weird you mention this guy now of all times as we used Fred Phelps samples from his sermons for our song this week. I'd actually never heard the guy talk before and I can assure you all he is full on batshit crazy, not of sound mind. If his hatred were on trial it would be found "not guilty by reason of insanity". And anyway, it's not like he's recruiting or converting anyone, The Westboro's nearly 90 member congregation is all related to each other (Phelps himself has spread his seed like 14 times, more than half of which are members) I know the things he says are disgusting, but if anything Westboro helps the Gay Rights movement by making it's opponents look like nutcases.

They are running a business. They go to every military funeral and do as much offensive shit as possible to arouse as much hatred as possible, and hopefully, to eilicit some kind of physical contact for which they can sue.

Look at their signs. Thick, heavy-duty signs. So they can pack them up and reuse them everywhere they go. Think how much money they're making off of lawsuits. The media attention helps them even more, because it often provides them with proof. They stay just within the bounds of law, and do their best to piss people off enough to make them break it.

It's a brilliant business plan, really. Until they get shot, of course.

Not any more - there was just a law passed that prohibits doing that kind of crap anywhere near a military funeral, at least in military cemetaries. Hopefully they get their asses arrested.
