Shaving in the Dark

Shaving in the Dark - And basically here's my version of Ike's song last week. Sort of. The lyrics were written Elegant Corpse style by the people who make up the cheering crowd, with the sole concept that it would be a motivational speech. I really can't tell you who all was in the crowd, definitely me, Isaac Colin, and probably Ike as I think that's him playing acoustic guitar. Some of the lyrics sound like it might have been Dalamar, with their polysyllabic psychedelic qualities. I know my gf at the time was in the crowd. She usually would not take part in WreckdoM, she hated the sound of her recorded voice, but this is one of maybe two or three exceptions. You can hear Dixie barking along and shaking her collar. Definitely whipped up in one evening.

Left/Right

Wow, has it really been 3 1/2 years since I last submitted in this thing? Well, life catches up with you. When we decided to try for a run of submissions this year (mission accomplished, btw) I kept telling myself I'd get back to this, so here goes.

Left/Right - You'll notice we didn't win with this entry but after the results were posted we sure felt like we had, because we got one vote more than Josh Woodward. We beat Josh for the first time ever. We wanted it, too. Josh had become the Anti-WreckdoM to us. You could not have found three prouder guys than after Motor Psycho, boy we really loved that entry and felt we were finally contending. Instead, Josh won that fight with a song I felt in no way embodied the title, it just sounded like every Josh Woodward song to me, and he always won! We got accused of not caring about winning fairly often, but that was not true. As time went on, we started to feel a goofy rivalry with Josh, which was stoked by the fact when he posted reviews he gave every entry a paragraph of input except for us, who always got a single line of "guess you had fun". We didn't really hate his stinking guts but our pretend hate of him got pretty intense at times. How in the hell this is the entry that finally bested him, I do not know. It's not bad. That revving up sounding electronic bit at the start is a theremin my dad has now. It was homemade and pretty funky, and made some great transistor noises. This is our first political song, I guess. I came up with the idea for the first two parts, going for something in the vein of Chaos Vs. Order, and Isaac's idea was to sample Bush. He had heard someone use samples of Bush to make him say scary stuff, and he really wanted to try it himself. So half the time we worked on the first part of the song, and the other half the evening was listening to Bush, and picking out weird shit. Isaac finished the song on his own. Oddly, I remember Isaac had rearranged his room to make a better space for recording inside his bedroom, and that Ike was over but didn't contribute to the song. Colin's guitar is awesome on this one. I'm guessing he played along rather than give Isaac something to sample, which marks a step up in his involvement and influence.

I am Tempted

I am Tempted - At the start of James Brown's Make It Funky James is asked by Bobby what he'll play next, and he replies "I don't know, but it's got to be funky". So here we are aping that for our funk endeavor, a genre I thought was going to go over really well. Does not really come together like I thought it would. Several elements I like a lot. Ike is doing his low voice, and by the end of the session his voice was kaput. I wrote his lines, but he adlibbed during the chorus and outtro. I did the high pitched chorus parts, and I recorded first so I think that is what is to blame most for the disjointedness between me and Ike. I can't recall specifically but that really sounds like Colin on organ to me, and it's probably him on guitar, too. Still inching ever closer to more conventional song structures. Isaac further deepened Ike's vocals with an effect, and it kinda makes it difficult to make out what he's saying which is too bad because it's all pretty funny.

Our reviews for this entry are all over the place, we did get, and use, a lot of great feedback. We also still got gems like "As usual you've created a type of music that no-one would ever want to listen to ever, I'm not sure why either of you havent shot yourselves" and Jim of Seattle saying "It's pointless to review this. It's like trying to tell a crust of bread that it doesn't taste enough like an apple"

Massive Intelligence Failure by MC Feat - Isaac presented this to me as a finished product and I remember liking it but wondering how in the hell he had time to make it between work, WreckdoM and going to Barfly's.

Glad you're back at it! And glad you guys are entering fights again.

I had similar feelings about Josh at the time. He's very talented, and performance and production and songwriting wise his stuff was way better put together than almost all the other Song Fight! stuff. But for whatever reason the songs just never had that big an impact on me personally. Maybe they were "too polished" although I feel hypocritical saying that because I hate when people say that's why they don't like something, lol. But I do feel like his presence and feedback on the boards pushed me at least to try harder to improve. I don't know if I ever beat him. I miss Plat's old Song Fight web site that let you see one artist vs another to show the common fights and who got more votes. Maybe I'll try to hack that into the Jukebox.

Dark All Day

Thanks for the encouragement, Lunkhead! As for Josh, I should probably thank him, he prepared me, over the following years we would get way more irritating input from other folks. He was a likable super villain.

Dark All Day - Don't remember much about the creative process, I know those corridor sounding moans and chain sounds from George A. Romero's Day of the Dead, and the splash you hear is from a previous song. Isaac really liked and got lots of traction out of that percussive water splash we recorded once in the bathtub. It is a good sound. So listening to this song and thinking of it's context, I would guess it's kind of a sequel to Zombie Son with extra articulated lyrical delivery due to the muddiness of the previous week. Like Motor Psycho it's an evolution in my approach to vocals. I cannot say if that rocking guitar and Theremin part was recorded for this song or recycled, but it sounds very much like Rubber Robot, so I would guess Colin had joined that band by now. I just know there was a brief time after our guitarist quit we were sometimes practicing without one and I was doing WreckdoM and getting to know Colin better, and one day I was like "Duh" and asked him to join. So, this was never a favorite, we were still happy with it at the time, and I still like it today. It's like a love letter to atmospheric novelty Halloween records and Vincent Price's rap on Thriller.
