It's been going on a for a few weeks now. A sporadic error message along the lines of "mysql.songfight.net is shitting a large brick". Seems particularly bad today.
Perhaps your host is having problems, or some application is hammering the database?

I'll pester Dreamhost support. I suspect their answer will be "get a VPS." (That is their answer for everything, lately.)

Hey I have unlimited bandwidth, hosts, and space with them - let's move everything to my account and save $10/month. (joke)

Anything 2.0 should be Ruby on Rails, shouldn't it?

Don't believe the hype! Java's not quite dead yet. And free services aren't enough, you need them to be in the language of your choosing? Beggars can't be choosers, eh?

Songfight 2.0 will not fix the problems that phpBB is having with the SQL server...

Actually, I think if MG rewrites the board in VB6, too, it will simply work without the SQL server. Just imagine — all of the data stored in INI files. Genius!

If I'm not mistaken, the SF archive is already flatfiles and thus immune to this SQL problem. So, we just need to switch the phpBB storage backend from MySQL to SQLite, which should be fairly straight-forward for PHP... but this is probably not a good idea.

The probability of it not being a good idea is fairly high.

We could always use BerkeleyDB!

Not flat files. One giant text file with a woefully inconsistent and ad-hoc pile of weird.

Yeah, let's use BerkeleyDB, the reason why software like OpenLDAP is so great at making for lots of entertainment after a power outage.

fluffy, you actually made me laugh out loud. Alas, it's only too true. But that's what I love about it. And you. Thanks.
