Old Art

Post by Gemini6Ice »

I've noticed that many of the older fights do not have cover art. Would there be any point to my spending some time to submit art for past fights for possible picking, or are old fights officially closed-and-archived?

I have a few ideas for some old covers, so I was just wondering if I should bother to make them. Thanks. ^_^

There is precedent for this.

Note to other artists: give him some competition :)

There's one from me for "Birds of Our Own" in the "submitted art" area, but I guess it wasn't good enough to be the official cover for that fight.

But, yeah, you folks with artistic talent, let's get some cover art together for those old fights!

Apparently I killed yet another good idea... oh, well...

On the "submitted art" pages, a couple of suggestions:

- could the scripts translate all the titles to all lower case or something? There are several titles which have been uploaded with two or three different versions of caPitaliZation, so the submissions aren't all in one place. All lower case wouldn't catch spelling errors, but it might fix about 2/3 of the problems on there right now...

- would it be possible to provide a "view artwork by fight date" option? I guess this would be tough to do given the inconsistencies in the way titles have been entered, but it would make it easier to check to see if anyone has submitted new art for an old fight that didn't usta have art.

Hey Art,

All of your suggestions are not only possible, but in the overall plan. I have just taken something of a break from coding, as I have gotten busier at work.

The plan is to have the art archive have the same features and sorting as the music archive, including artist blurbs, etc.

Thank you for your patience.

Oh, and about your submission, I just forgot to put it up. Will get to that, too.

YAY, SPUD!

Possible improvement for the art submittal page: provide a checkbox to indicate "this is art for an old fight that doesn't have art" and then fightmaster could receive personal email notification that... uh, wait, no, not that part.

But it would be nice if there was some way that the casual browser of art submissions could select on "art submitted for fights for which there is not yet official art in the archive..."

I don't know how the data throwing is all connected together, but having a pop-up menu in lieu of the manual entry fight name field of the submit art page would be a boon to those who find themselves unable to enter a name as it's written on the front page. Not me of course, I'm too retentive to slack on that sort of thing... heh. If a grand unified database driven gleaming machine of music majesty is where this little engine that could is headed, I mean.

Please forgive me, I'm on my first cup of coffee and really should know better than to post anything longer than an emocon.

One other thing (bolded to stand out from the other blather)... last night I was looking for the cover art for Rabies and it wasn't in the art archive. It was, however, available through the music archive, and I was able to see what I needed to. 'Twas a weird anomaly, and thought I should point it out to those who (want to/need to) know about these sort of things.

So is old art going to be posted on a first come first create basis?

Art Needed

Post by Gemini6Ice »

Okay, so I went through the archives today.

The images for Dinga Da Donga are broken. The old fights of "Zero to Phantom" and "A B C D Puppies" do not have art, but would you FMs care for retroactive art on them, or would you rather just have the selected new-fight art eventually copied to the old fights?

If anyone wants a quick checklist to know what e can make art for, here is the list of all songs without cover art, from newest to oldest:
  • Dinner For One
  • Polaris
  • Man of the Year
  • Not This Time
  • Totally Digging Your Mom
  • I Was Only Joking
  • Don't Fix It
  • Pooch Quick Start
  • Two Bucks and I'm Yours
  • Driveway Seed
  • Cemetary
  • Back to the Airplanes
  • Funny Enough for You
  • Criminal Charges
  • Postcard
  • Last Date
  • Poison Pill
  • Stuck Down a Mineshaft
  • Bad Dreams
  • Grandfather Sword
  • Top Drawer
  • Hotel
  • World of Screams
  • On My Block
  • Rot to Fill
  • Floating Bridge
  • Secrets
  • Husky Youth
  • Alarm in the Graduate School
  • Experimental Fashion
  • Indie Rock Bottom
  • My Sister
  • Adaptation
  • Acid Mouth
  • It's a Shame My Binoculars Don't Work at Night
  • It's Charging
  • Snow Globe
  • Skyline
  • That's the Spirit
  • Highway
  • Alright Alright
  • Is It Cold?
  • Firecrackers
  • Tiny Room
  • Down to the Atom
  • Birds of Our Own
  • Do the Math
  • Watch Your Face
  • Do It for Captain
  • Tracks for Future Practice
  • A Thousand Swords
  • Been to China
  • Black Hole
  • On a Line
  • Shipwreck
  • Don't Dance
  • Midnight Rendezvous
  • Repair My Heart
  • Eternity Without You
  • I Love You
  • Zero to Phantom (???)
  • A B C D Puppies (???)
  • Assassinate Queen Genius
  • Standing in the Death Car
  • Flood Victim
  • The Last Words of Cotton Wool
  • Golfpunk Drives a Cadillac

Not trying to stir things up, I was just curious if that was the plan. Which is ok by me. Not like I'm going to complain about not getting to do some art for something that gets done before me.

Great job on the link update on the main page.

Dinga Da Donga fixed. It wasn't just the art, the songs weren't working either. It was a directory name thing.

I do have one in the works for Tiny Room, so if I can call that one now... that would be cool.

My Birds of Our Own is still not posted.

Weren't there several "ABCD Puppies" submissions this time around? Maybe pick one of those to use for the old fight, same for Z2P if there were multiple submits there.

As long as we're not getting bad stuff rushed out for the glory of doing the art for a songfight, I think "first art submitted is the winner" is reasonable - let's add a little sense of urgency to getting art for the old fights...

I second this idea, so long as our admins find the other submitted artworks acceptable. It sucks to spend time working on a cover and not have it picked (even though this is known as an outcome beforehand), so doing this suggestion will make two more people feel their artworks were not done in vain.
