The Gods Must be Crazy

Post by Sober »

Damn what a fine film. I bought it the other night based on a couple recommendations, and only just watched it.

I love the way they mixed the very authentic feeling documentary style with the gag comedy. The audio was very strange, though. It felt as if the entire film was dubbed over, as if it weren't originally in English. I couldn't tell very well by watching the actors' mouths, though. Is this a foreign film?

I'm glad I bought it. Walmart classics - $13.99. Threw it in the basket with Tony Hawk Underground 2, some shirts, and a box of Twinkies.

Yeah, it's Botswanian, though I'm pretty sure all the English dialogue was filmed in English. I remember the audio being strange the first time I saw it a while back. It's ignorable before you get too far into it.

It's a sprawling comedy, to be sure. I tend to lump it in mentally with things like O Lucky Man, for its length and its bizarre brand of humor. I haven't seen it in some time. I saw the whole thing through once (minus two bathroom breaks), and I've seen bits and pieces again since.

I'd hesitate to call it great, I'd give it around a B, B+, maybe. But surely there's nothing else quite like it out there, and that's saying something.

These two movies are important parts of my childhood. They're fantastic (first one is better), as well as a documentary by the same director, James Uys, called Animals Are Beautiful People.

Also TGMBCrazy is how I determine if one of my friends is retarded. I spoke about it with a group of friends and half of them thought it was expletively mocking the culture of the people of the Kalahari. Apparently shots of possessionless-yet-contented bushmen juxtaposed with unhappy Americans in shopping malls where too subtle an indicator of who Uys was mocking. And it turns out that everyone who thought TGMBCrazy was a mean-spirited film actually was retarded. Try this with your friends!

I enjoyed it with my Grandmother. But then again, I'm young enough for some of you guys to be my parents. Or for others, I'm close.
