Circle of Titles 2022

Post by JonPorobil »

Traditionally, I've run a side fight called Circle of Titles shortly after Nur Ein. The timing is a little messed up this year because my father passed away around that time, but I'm back in town, feeling a little more up to things, and wondering if there's any interest in spinning up that circle again. If so, let me know and I'll figure out the schedule.

Here are the rules, for anyone who's never done this before:
1.) Everyone who wants in announces their intention to participate. (Or not; if you want to surprise us, that's cool with me)
2.) Each participant thinks up two titles and submits them to me.
2a.) Please do not make your title purposefully nonsensical or difficult for the recipient.
2b.) If two or more people send me the same title, for the sake of variety and fairness, I will politely ask them each to pick a different one.
3.) I randomize stuff up so that each person gets someone else's title, and send those back.
4.) Each person records a song for the title they get.
5.) At the end, the songs will be posted, along with the revelation of who submitted what title.
6.) Titles are then up for grabs for whoever wants extra credit. Also, there will be an opportunity to for others to step up and record songs for the "stiffees."
7.) For the record, I'll be participating, too. Yes, that's a little unfair, but I'm doing it anyway. (I promise that I don't give myself preferential treatment for title assignments.)

If titles are disbursed The week of August 15th (or before) then I would be in. If it's later then I'm a maybe.

Thanks, fluffy. He left a big legacy and a very large number of sad friends.

So far, we're at three yeses and a maybe. I'd want the circle to be a little bigger if I'm going to run the sidefight. Or if Circle of Titles takes a year off, I wouldn't mind that so much either. I'll wait a couple more days to see if there's any further interest.

Count me in.

My condolences on your loss. Take care of yourself. As someone who also lost their dad this year, let me tell you... grief comes in waves, so take care of yourself.

All right, I gave it a week and we have:

myself
Phlub
Pigfarmer was a maybe, but since the titles definitely won't be assigned before August 15th, probably a no? Note that the deadline for this is typically pretty lenient, so T.C. let me know if you're able to reconsider
fluffy was a maybe
Lichen Throat
Niveous
Brown Word

That's five relatively firm yeses and two maybes, depending on how you count it? It'd be the smallest circle to date, but I think that's enough to roll with it. PM me your titles (or send via email, Discord, or FB messenger, if you have access to me via those platforms). Two titles per entrant. I'll keep the title submissions open until noon EDT on Saturday, August 20th, and aim to have the assignments sent on that same day.

Once the titles are out, let's say two weeks for the songs - so they'd be due Saturday, September 3rd.

Sound good?

I'm probably gonna try to do this. Theoretically I'll have the weekend of the 27th free but classes start the 22nd. If I get a syllabus for the classes before the 20th I can make a more informed decision.

Bump. I said I would distribute the titles yesterday, but as of right now, I actually only have submissions from three participants. If you're interested, let me know your titles as soon as possible, and I'll get them out there!

All right, I've gotten more titles. With fluffy officially bowing out, that leaves one holdout who expressed interest but hasn't submitted titles yet. I've reached out to that person individually, and I'll give until the end of today, before I send out the assignments. Thanks y'all!

I've received the last pair of titles. Assignments will be going out over the next half hour. Since I'm distributing them later than I outlined above, it's only fair to push the deadline accordingly. Let's aim to have these songs turned in by the end of Monday, September 5th. Email me a link or attachment, and I'll make sure they all get posted. Happy songwriting, everyone!

EDIT (10:22am EDT): All assignments have been sent via message board PM. Let me know if you didn't receive yours or if you have any questions.

I've got something that's kind of a start, trying to get adventurous with guitar harmonics and tuning a synth to match them. I really like my titles.

I wrote and have mostly recorded a song to one of my assigned titles. I'll owe an apology to the submitter but at least I'll have a song done for this. *cheer*

Definitely won't have this by the fifth. But it'll be a banger, I promise!

I don't have your email. I sent a PM with a link to the song. I can post to the board on the 5th or after if needed, but figured a big reveal might be cool if it works out.

I'm bogged down in production delays, and my four year old hasn't let me record drums because he keeps walking into the room and screaming. I think it's a banger in progress. I just need to come up with more lyrics than what I've got cause right now it's just a chorus and a couple lines. Sorry about the delay, I think this'll be worth it though, I'm going all in.

I could finish today if I had to, but the song would be better if I had a couple more days.
