Dear person covering me (or other interested parties):
Here are three of the four songs from my list.
Over the Rhine - Sleep Baby Jane
Jazz Butcher - Who Loves You Now?
Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star
I think my fiancee has my Elvis album, so if my coverer needs an mp3 of that tell Niv.

That's part of the beauty of the GoM.

I know that I had never listened to the New Pornographers before. But last year Jute Gyte covered them. I fell in love with Jute's version and the original. And I know I probably would never have heard them if not for the GoM.

To start the ball rolling, I would like to hear my cover as a christmas present. So week beginning 20th Dec might be good. -1 week for people are who are a bit late. -1 week for people asking for an extension.

So I say Monday 13th December, with the real aim of gettin' em all together in time for 22nd/23rd?

j$

My vote is to aim for Dec. 31 as a "loose" deadline. (Pretty much how it ended up last year) I can post the page with the songs within the first few days of 2005. Anyone coming in late will be added as they arrive, but we will not wait to post everyone who was on time.
Sorry J$, but for me personally the next two months are the busiest of the year both at work as well as at home. Although I could probably make the Dec. 20th deadline you proposed, I think the extra time would be a great help. What does everyone else think? SPEAK UP PEEPS!

Oh, and J$ - the artwork is very cool. I will definitely use it for the page with your permission.

hoping to have them all done by the end of the year sounds good to me. but i think j$ has the right idea: i know i personally am terrible at doing things BEFORE the deadline, if a deadline is imposed. so to set a deadline of, say, christmas or the week before or whatever, might actually result in having them all finished by the new year...

[edit: although i'm not sure how successful it would be, stating a deadline but at the same time stating that you are expecting people to not be done by the deadline. that's kind of like setting your clock ten minutes ahead so you aren't late for work, and then just leaving ten minutes later because you know the clock has been set ahead. it's a good idea in theory but it's tough to train your mind to focus on the pretend deadline...]

hey you're hosting it, it's entirely up to you and Niv. Dec 31st is fine by me.

And yes, permission is granted for use of the image in whatever you want!

Cool! I don't know any of my four songs, or even the bands.

If my person needs a chart for a song, I'm happy to provide it. PM Niveous. Of course, to keep it a surprise, I'd have to sends charts for all four songs. But no problem.

I don't have an opinion on the dealine. But Niveous, whatever the date is, you should set it now, so we can all know ASAP. Set a hard date, and we'll do our best to make it. We all know that deadlines are often missed for sidefights, but if we set two deadlines, people are just going to see the second date as the real deadline. The earlier one means nothing. The dealine isn't just the date your song has to be done by, it's also the date we can expect them to be posted.

Oh how weird. I'm sitting in a sky-lounge of a business hotel, very swanky, 29th floor, panoramic view, and the piped music has been softly playing Sinatra, mellow jazz, Barbra Streisand, you know, safe corporate stuff, and now all of a sudden I'm hearing Super Furry Animals. In Welsh.

Yes. The deadline is the thing that keeps SongFight vibrant and alive. Set it in stone, and my vote is for as soon as possible. Applying urgency to the situation results in magic, at least for me. Give me too long, and I flounder.

Hey, hey! I got 3 unknowns an 1 all-time-favouite!

The best of all possible worlds. If I don't like the 3 I haven't heard before I've got a great fall-back option.

To whoever got mine - I'll email mp3s to Niveous tomorrow. They are my 4 favourite Australian songs of all time - between the Go-Betweens, The Triffids, The Saints and Hunters & Collectors there should be something to suit just about everybody (I hope).

I love my list 'cos I don't know any of them by name and I really should. I have a pretty good idea of the one I'm going to do...

I hope whoever gets mine gets a chance to hear my 'obscure' choice 'Oh Daddy Oh' by the Gainsbourgs. It's a hoot. I'll even throw in an English translation for anyone who doesn't fancy tackling the French bits.

WTF? Deadline has to be Dec. 25 or earlier, otherwise we should leave out Gift and just call it "of Music."

Unless you're Russian. Is this a Russian GoM?

unless you're jewish. (which several 'fighters are)

also: j$, if you are so keen on people hearing that song, maybe you should put it up somewhere for general download for people who do and do not have your list, alike?

Yeah. Good idea! I am in the next few days Upgrading to broadband! It's the end of an era - no more moping about slow connection speeds in reviews! As part of the deal I get a certain amount of webspace - so I'll probably use that for my GOM songs for the time being.

Personally, I'm digging what I got, hadn't heard any of them before, whee!

As with everyone else, if you need one or more of the mp3s from the Primitive Screwheads list, pass the PM through the Niveonator and they'll get posted in reasonable timeliness.

what RG said over my head. i'm totally pumped for the cover i got, not because i knew the song because i didn't. but the artist is a favorite of mine and after researching the song a bit, i found it was originally produced by one of my favorite producers, and so i went and bought the CD and i love it (the CD and the song) so all in all, i'd have to say i'm happy with what i got, and look forward to putting a good effort into it.

thanks niv. you did me right :)

But that's an argument for the due date to be even earlier. Which I'm fine with. I doubt I'll get anything done the last couple weeks of december anyway.

My tracks are up at http://www.glitterandtwang.org/songfight

FWIW I think that a deadline of December 6 or 13 would be optimal.
