Ye olde songfight?

Post by sleepysilverdoor »

Obviously this would wait until Nur Ein was over - but I was listening to The Everly Brothers' album "songs our daddy taught us" this morning and got to thinking that it would be darn neat to have a sidefight where the primary rule is "cover a song written prior to 100 years ago. So I guess before 1920? There's a whole lot of options (and centuries) to choose from. I mean genre-wise that would be potentially all over the place but that's half the fun! Old timey country? Hildegaard? Sea shanties? Plainsong?

Is anyone interested? If we do this should it be limited to a certain time span? Like " 19th century only"? Or keep it wide open?

Discuss! Or shoot it down if my idea sucks lol.

If you’ve never seen Richard Thompson’s 1000 Years of Popular Music, it’s well worth a listen.

I am well acquainted with that album to the point of wanting to specifically avoid covering "Sumer is icumen in" cause it gets stuck in my head every time I hear it :)

I'd be into it but mostly because I've already had a lot of experience doing jazz renditions of Mozart and Beethoven and have been wanting an excuse to force myself to finally record one.

Am I the only one who thinks that sounds completely wrong? Mind you - my heavy metal version of Kraftwerk is coming along a treat.

I mean, the third stream movement produced some neat stuff. I'd love to hear it! Though a free jazz take on some stupidly complicated baroque pieces sounds just as fun.

Brubeck took a lot of inspiration from classical music. Add some grace notes to Beethoven and you’re half way there (oh, living on a prayer)

Awesome, awesome.

Is August 11 a reasonable deadline? I see circle of titles has appeared and that has more of history so they ought to go first. Message me with your choice so I can let you know if someone else is already doing it...which may or may not matter depending on your opinion.

When you're done I guess send them to me so I can put them on github or Google drive or something!

Game on!

OK. Tomorrows job is to knock up a version of "Streets of Forbes" (traditional song describing events from 1865 - no one really knows when it was actually written). If anyone knows it and wants to join in - jump in and let me know.

Between the Irish and bluegrass I'm into, I could do something like this.

Is the idea that we all do a really old song of our own choosing?
