Day 44
(54.9% done)

Welcome to 2008. I have made it through the last few fights of 2007 and now I'm back in multiple fights. I don't recall why we went back. This was an awkward set of fights. There was just a lot of music that I didn't dig. Take for instance, the Mexican Chimpanzees "501" is just them saying that they sang 501 Bottles of Beer on the Wall but didn't record it. I only gave GEMS score to 12 songs today. I gave TRASH to 43. So, that's a bit above my usual average for hate in a day. Let's keep it positive though and look at those GEMS.

GEMS:
  • 501 by chonny
  • 501 by Max The Cat
  • 501 by Melvin
  • Just To Be Difficult by Melvin
  • I Want To Get On It by Steve Durand
  • Credible Threat by The Idiot Kings
  • Credible Threat by Merisan
  • Credible Threat by Pumpkin Buzzard
  • The Last Year by Jach S Feat Iona
  • The Last Year by Lockheed Symphony
  • The Last Year by Those Meddling Kids
  • Mobile Home House Party by WreckdoM

Fact: I was trying my hardest to write the most blatant rip-off of "Tomorrow Never Knows" I could. Glad it was well received in retrospect!

I was thinking it'd be cool to look at lowest point total as well, but that seems like a lot more work.

Day 45
(56.4% done)

Made my way through another 180 or so songs today. I wasn't thrilled with yesterday's listen. Today's was full 180. That's just how it is with the Songfight archive. What was in this group? Well, it includes Songfight Presents: New York. That's represented in the Cute Boots fight where you get live songs from Jim Tyrrell and myself. There wasn't a huge live fight that second night. I think Roymond also competed but he sent in the studio version of his song to the actual fight. SFP: NY was at a place called Goodbye Blue Monday. GBM was in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Luke Henley had booked the place, not knowing that Ben Krieger already had ties to there. Luke didn't play at the show. I think it was already after he decided to move back to AZ. I ran point for the whole thing and probably dealt with a bunch of people who I met again years later at Sidewalk and Little Skips without knowing it. There was a lot of fun stuff to those shows. Night one had me, Roymond, Heuristics Inc, Ziplee, a surprise appearance by Boltoph, and Ben Krieger who did his entire Cable Beach. Night two had Glennny and Friends, Charcoal, and Jim Tyrrell.

Look at these youngsters:

Other things in this set of songs. The Howling Monkeys make their appearance and pick up 3 of their 4 winners (one under the name Uncle Gravy Biscuits). The band that is called Qwayne Hange in the archives makes their first appearance. I have no idea when they changed their name because they were known as Enter It In The Art Show back in the day. Lonbobby and Freddielove teamed up and have one of the best band names in the archive- Atari in the Desert. Lots of appearances by the Pathetic Wannabees. Ease Up On The Drugs includes a song by Mandy on Fire which I rated a GEM but your mileage will definitely vary. There was the epic Killer Whales/ Sherman's Way incident (3 entries, all the same song). Lots of stuff going on here and knowing what's coming tomorrow, I'm excited for 2008.

Here are the GEMS:
  • They Control the Weather by The Howling Monkeys
  • Cute Boots by Niveous
  • Cute Boots by roymond
  • Ease Up On The Drugs by Mandy On Fire
  • Ease Up On The Drugs by Melvin
  • Why So Serious? by Atari in the Desert
  • Why So Serious? by the LMNOPotamus
  • Why So Serious? by Precarious Loaf
  • Why So Serious? by Uncle Gravy Biscuits
  • Ark of Philadelphia by Stu Jordan
  • Ark of Philadelphia by Zipline
  • At the Arcade by Hostess Mostess
  • At the Arcade by Renwick
  • Radio Ready by The Hell Yeahs
  • Radio Ready by The Howling Monkeys
  • Radio Ready by roymond
  • Client No. 9 by The Capitalist Youth
  • Client No. 9 by Qwayne Hange
  • Client No. 9 by Renwick
  • Switcheroo by Cthonic Youth
  • Switcheroo by The Hell Yeahs
  • Switcheroo by Melvin

Day 46-48
(58.8% done)

A couple of wacky days at work have made me have to lump a lot of songs together into this one update. Plus sometimes doing these updates is harder than the actual listen. So, what was in this set? I know for me personally this was the time at Songfight where I was doing a lot of work as a lyricist. There were a couple of songs in this bunch by Billy's Little Trip and Paco del Stinko that I wrote. I also wrote a song for Merisan. That lead to the angriest I recall myself being at Songfight (that was Nur Ein related). See, I wrote a pretty good lyric (coming from me, my harshest critic) and Merisan turned it to an amazing song for the "A Problem of Perspective". It came in second place. Now, I'm not one to gripe about a second place except for this time. The winner of that fight was a band called Kid Cruiser and that week, they entered a song about raping 12 year olds. Still bitter about that one.

Speaking of Merisan, this set of songs included the debut of the Berkeley Social Scene. It's wild that it took me this long to get to BSS. Who else debuted during this time (Spring/Summer of 2008)? Todd McHatton, Jan Krueger, SomeGuyCalledNoel. There were a couple of rebrandings as Jolly Roger switched to Andrew Reist and Caravan Ray was suddenly Give Our Regards To The Earth's Core. But this set of songs was all about just a solid group of SFers going at it. There was i.p., Jonathan Mann, Melvin, J$, Paco del Stinko, just lots of really good stuff.

Here are the GEMS:
  • God's Thumb by Billy's Little Trip featuring Paco del Stinko
  • Morning on Bourbon by Flinstones II
  • Morning on Bourbon by The Seamus Collective
  • A Problem of Perspective by Anja Claire feat. Evil-E
  • A Problem of Perspective by Merisan
  • Robot Candidate by Ben Krieger
  • Robot Candidate by G3RT
  • Robot Candidate by Renwick
  • Robot Candidate by Robots do the Work
  • Empty Wednesday by chonny
  • Empty Wednesday by King Arthur
  • I'm Outstanding by Stopwatcher
  • Walking The Border by i.p.
  • Walking The Border by Octothorpe
  • Walking The Border by Prose/AIC Industries
  • Walking The Border by SomeGuyCalledNoel
  • In the Valley by Johnny Cashpoint
  • In the Valley by Melvin
  • In the Valley by Signboy
  • Cryptic Comment by Boltoph
  • Cryptic Comment by Caravan Ray
  • Cryptic Comment by Glenn Case
  • Cryptic Comment by i.p.
  • Cryptic Comment by Paco del Stinko
  • Mediocre Savior by Berkeley Social Scene
  • Mediocre Savior by Frosty The Showman and MC Squared
  • Mediocre Savior by Hello, California
  • Calico Alley by Berkeley Social Scene
  • Calico Alley by Dollar Bill & the Inkpoints
  • Interesting Times by Billy's Little Trip featuring Paco Del Stinko
  • Interesting Times by Johnny Cashpoint
  • Interesting Times by Jonathan Mann and the Not-So-Flats
  • Paper Thin by Andrew Reist

Day 49-50
(60.6%)

2008 Complete!

How have the GEMS been going? Here are some fuzzy numbers!
2000: 2/25 (8%)
2001: 51/500 (10.2%)
2002: 25/233 (10.7%)
2003: 78/936 (8.3%)
2004: 150/1685 (8.9%)
2005: 134/1399 (9.6%)
2006: 128/1283 (10.3%)
2007: 72/827 (8.7%)
2008: 82/752 (10.9%)

2008 was a good year. I feel like the class of 2008 may not have been the biggest when it came to debuts but there were lots of good songs in the year.

Oddity: MC Denyer's "City in Fog". The clearest form of plagiarism I have found in the archives. It's just a song from an Aussie rap group and he just put his name on and scored 10 votes for it. It makes you wonder how many times a person has pulled this off?

I've honestly been doing this little write up for hours. hours. It's just been one of those days. Here are the GEMS.
  • Everybody Calm Down by Finding Nemoy
  • Everybody Calm Down by Jonathan Mann and the Berkeley Social Scene
  • In The Tank by Max The Cat
  • In The Tank by Tonetripper
  • Shoelace Soup by Elaine DiMasi
  • A Scary Thing by B. Ellison
  • A Scary Thing by Lonbobby
  • A Scary Thing by Manhattan Glutton
  • A Scary Thing by Paco del Stinko
  • Stomach For It by Johnny Cashpoint
  • Stomach For It by Josh Woodward
  • Hollywood Wax by Make Spoons Not Knives
  • Hollywood Wax by Quimby
  • Hollywood Wax by Steve Durand
  • City in Fog by Howl Down the Chimney
  • City in Fog by Jan Krueger

Where have I been the last two weeks. Well, I took a week off. That's how we ended up with a Lucky Witch song in this week's SF. Then I came back to the project and what happened. Work. Don't I always listen to these songs during work. Yes. But this week has been a bastard. Like a "I don't care that I've worked for this company for twenty years, this may be the last straw" kind of week. And inbetween the two of those, i got sick. Rough for doing a project. I did listen to some songs this week though. It was a tough week in that respect too because these were some hefty fights. 2009 had fights like "Love Me A Little Bit More" and "Come Down Where You Ought To Be" which together have almost 100 songs. I think smaller fights help the day go by a bit better. That doesn't mean that there weren't good stuff in the ~300 songs I did get through this week. Here are the GEMS:

GEMS:
  • Elegy for Industry by Electric Needle Room
  • Elegy for Industry by Quimby
  • Love Me a Little Bit More by Durand Durand
  • Love Me a Little Bit More by heine
  • Love Me a Little Bit More by The Hell Yeahs
  • Love Me a Little Bit More by Manhattan Glutton
  • Love Me a Little Bit More by Pet Squirrel
  • Come Down Where You Ought To Be by Andrew Reist
  • Come Down Where You Ought To Be by Big Crouton
  • Come Down Where You Ought To Be by Doctor Worm
  • Come Down Where You Ought To Be by Quimby featuring Billy's Little Trip
  • We Keep Them Alive by Berkeley Social Scene
  • Green Eleven by SomeGuyCalledNoel
  • Thinkin' about the Old Days by Berkeley Social Scene
  • Thinkin' about the Old Days by The Hell Yeahs
  • Thinkin' about the Old Days by Hot Wire
  • Thinkin' about the Old Days by Manhattan Glutton
  • Thinkin' about the Old Days by Steve Durand
  • The Proposal by 15-16 Puzzle
  • The Proposal by Glenn Case
  • The Proposal by The Mojos
  • Spin the Bottle by Ka Maua Hana Punahele
  • Spin the Bottle by LML
i definitely need to play some catch up. Though there's a part of me that just wants to crawl up in a ball in front of a heater and just vegitate while British quiz shows play in the background, we'll see how the next week goes. 62.68% done.

A week has passed without work on this project. But it's not for lack of desire. I've been having health issues. Last week was a rough week. Hopefully I'll bounce back this week.

I'm appreciating what you are doing for this project, and looking forward to a show with you and Glenn bringing together more of the history of the old days, and highlighting the gems you've found.

No pressure.

I'll have to start grabbing the gems down to feature them in pre and post Listening party plays.

Update:
(65.24% done)

Health is getting back in order and I've gone through another batch of 2009 songs. What kind of stuff was in this pile? Notable debuts included Crank Radio, James Owens, Gooey Caramel Centaur (what a name), and Tuners Union. Every week has a sizable fight with a Paco song and a Weakest Suit song. There was a lot of stuff that kind of meandered. There are a ton of songs which were just OKAY. But there were also some wild songs in there. One of my all time favorites was in this pack- "Sold Out" by Brittant Spud, which was Spud + Sven Mullet and it absolutely rocks. I wish that we had been making music videos back then. I feel like a video of Spud walking through Times Square to this song would be epic. Overall, I don't think I'm a big fan of 2009 SF, though like with most of the archive, there's always some charm to be found. (And as always, YMMV)

Oddity: King Arthur has a background in secular music. He brought that to SF with his "Sometimes It's Hard To Keep Moving". I never thought there would be latin chants at SF.

Here are the GEMS:
  • Sold Out by Balance Lost
  • Sold Out by Brittany Spud
  • Fortune Cookie by PiGPEN
  • I Am A Target by The Hinsdale Patent
  • False Positive by Berkeley Social Scene
  • False Positive by WreckdoM
  • World's Greatest Dad by Paco del Stinko
  • Amsterdam by Balance Lost
  • They Meet by Glenn and Rachael
  • They Meet by Kasper
  • Dry Spell by Jan Krueger
  • Dry Spell by Sheail
  • 9/11 Was An Inside Job by Balance Lost
  • 9/11 Was An Inside Job by Naked Philosophy
  • Nothing is Everything by i.p.
  • Back to the Well by Cock
  • Back to the Well by The Hell Yeahs

Geez. I haven't posted in this thread since November. Well, the exploration is still chugging along.

(67.04% done)

I finally made it out of 2009. It should be a downhill sprint from here as the years are smaller. What has the last set of songs been like? Well, it was a time period where we were inundated with rap. I guess there was another forum somewhere full of young rappers and as soon as MC Milk Plus hit SF in a big way, they all followed. There was a supergroup of them called Torrentz. But most of the rappers didn't hang around. In fact, in the time frame that I listened to here (September 2009 to January 2010) the only acts who stuck around long enough to have 5 SF entries were Cain; the aforementioned Torrentz; Jeff DeSantis; Mister Mann; Ux Mpuzm; and the Pannacotta Army. It's wild that Pannacotta is so big now in 2020. Such consistency.

Here are the GEMS:
  • Made to be Played by Dr. Spectacular's Power Circus
  • Made to be Played by Manhattan Glutton
  • Ring them Bells by Berkeley Social Scene
  • Ring them Bells by Cville Ramblings
  • Ring them Bells by Luke Henley
  • Monkeys on my Back by Signboy
  • Who Needs Sleep by Cain
  • Who Needs Sleep by Ice The Man
  • Who Needs Sleep by Jonathan Mann
  • Welcome Home Frank by Erin K & Tash
  • Welcome Home Frank by Paco del Stinko
  • She Already Knows by LML
  • Cost of Living by Tyler Heath
  • Frostbite by Cain
  • Frostbite by Realist & Signboy
  • Crush by Cain/ Prosthetic Limp
  • Crush by Deja Vu featuring Vertigo
  • Crush by i.p.
  • Crush by medusa oblongata
  • Keep All Your Promises by A Far Off Land
  • Keep All Your Promises by The Sober Irishman
  • The Road to Hana by MC Milk-Plus
