Remixfight

Post by Evermind »

A bunch of people have expressed interest in doing a Remixfight, so I figured I'd get the ball rolling.

I'll pick a track at semi-random from https://www.cambridge-mt.com/ms/mtk/ and let everyone who's "in" know what it is.

Reply here to let me know you're "in" by December 13th, mixdowns will be due December 20th.
I am definitely too square for how experimental this is, but I can imagine that if I was in the right state of mind, the section starting at 2:20 might transport me to another dimension - jeffhenderson

This is totally nowhere near my area of comfort, so I'll give it a go and see what happens.

Reminder that Gift of Music is going on right now too!

Also, just last week I was thinking about Remixfight and wondering if anyone involved still owned any of the domains or whatever. Fortuitous timing.

And, uh, in, I guess. Not that stiffing has any real penalty for this.

Sign me up. Can you clarify the rules, though? Do we all get the same song, or different songs?

Just to be absolutely clear - by "remix", are we talking about the common meaning where an artist/producer takes an original work and adds their own things to it as they please, or the stricter interpretation where it's really only about creating a new mixdown of the existing material with nothing extra added? I'm asking because the post this sidefight was coming from seems to be about the mixdown aspect only...

Oh, that's a good point, I hadn't looked at the originating site.

FWIW, for the last little while when Jack Shite was still running it as a weeklyish thing on its own site, he was mostly picking sample packs and a capellas from ccMixter.org.

Everyone gets the same zip file of unprocessed song tracks, which I will post to in this thread on the 13th.

I think the results will be more interesting if people have complete creative license. If you want to create the best mixdown you can, great. If you want to cut samples from the tracks and create an entirely new, original song by sampling the tracks, go for it. If you want to record or program new material to accompany it, cool.

If we get both sorts of submissions, we might consider judging them in separate categories.

Alright! The target of this Remixfight is "Walkie Talkie", a Ukrainian Indie-Rock song by Detsky Sad. Multitrack is here, go nuts!

My immediate confusion upon listening to this and looking at the files is probably an indication that I am in need of the practice which this exercise is intended to provide.
