'Tis that season again! Gift of Music 2005!!!

'Tis the season for our yearly version of Secret Santa, it's:

the Gift of Music!!!
http://soultreerecords.com/GOM/GOM2005.html

Here's the concept:
Anyone who wants to be a part of this cover challenge simply needs to post here, telling me that they're in and listing 4 songs (links to the songs are appreciated by not necessary). These 4 songs are 4 songs that you really like and would like to hear covered. Once the list of participants is compiled, the names will be tossed into a hat and paired off.
From there, each participant will get a private message telling them who they'll be giving the gift of music to as well as the 4 songs that person chose. The participant picks 1 song from the 4 and covers the song. Then on the due date, we post the results and everybody wins.

(Note- please no Abominizing. Don't make a list of 4 songs with 3 that are incredibly hard to do so that it pigeon holes the giftgiver down to 1 choice.)

(Note- This year we are devoted. No one is gonna be left without a gift, dammit!)

It's Secret Santa meets Coverfight meets Hxaro with incredible results. The previous 2 GoM's have been exceptional. Check them out on Eddiebangs' website Soul Tree Records:

2003 http://www.soultreerecords.com/GOM1.html
2004 http://soultreerecords.com/GOM/GOM2004.html

I'll take suggestions to the exact due date, factoring in vacations and the like.

So if you want in to this year's Gift Of Music, post here within the next 3 weeks.
_____________________________________________________________

EDIT:

Everything is due on January 9th

Please send info via pm to Eddiebangs preferably numbered in order:

1 - Name of original artist
2 - Name of song
3 - Link to your cover of the song
4 - Your name (real or screen/band name. However you want it listed)
5 - Link to your website (optional)
6 - comments/quote to accompany listing (optional)
7 - Name of songfighter who requested it

Looking forward to hearing some great stuff. Happy New Year

yes Yes YES!

Here's a list of songs I'd love to hear covered.

Billy Joel - It's Still Rock 'n Roll To Me
Crash Test Dummies - Superman's Song
Michael Jackson - Human Nature
Weezer - Buddy Holly

EDIT: removed 'The Cars - Moving In Stereo', because it was done last year.

The Cars' Moving in Stereo was covered by Andrew Was Here At Midnight last year.

Question: Say there are two members of a certain band, and they each have a list of four songs they'd like to hear covered. Say they each put a list out, but then collaborated on the covers that they each were assigned. You could say that that's the equivalent of one person just making two lists and agreeing to do two covers--just with two people who are acting as one.

Would that be allowed? Or should the two people just collectively agree on a list?

For that matter, would it allowed for one person to make two or more lists and make the equivalent amount of covers?

Just, you know... checkin' out the limits...

Oh, Jim, you should check out the Moog Cookbook's cover of "Buddy Holly". Brilliant stuff.

This is why I love this sidefight so much. It's been up less than an hour and i already got two new songs to listen to. Woot!

I'll take out MiS and add in something else.

oh, and I have nothing to do with the organization of this fight, so my opinion is no more than... well, opinion.... but I'd say the more music, the better. More people submitting lists = more covers = more good.
and it hadn't much crossed my mind, but this sort of project would be a LOT of fun to do a collab with. oh i just can't wait for this one.

Go Gom!

And a Merry Christmas to you, too!

My song selection is forthcoming. I am having a much harder time deciding than I have in years past because I have so much new music on my iPod this time around. And I cannot, for the life of me, decide on my favorite song by The Shins.

#1: Rilo Kiley - I Never

Okay, assuming the answer to my question above is, "Yes, that's okay," here it is (in order of preference):

"Knee Play 5" from <i>Einstein on the Beach</i> by Philip Glass
"Sadie" by Joanna Newsom
"You See Me Crying" by Aerosmith
"Andy's Chest" by the Velvet Underground

In answer to your question Mogosagatai, each band member can make a separate entry. And collaborations are welcomed and encouraged. But only one list per person.

And here is my tentative list:
"It's Dangerous Walking Out Your Front Door" by underOATH
"Half Jack" by the Dresden Dolls
"Pagan Poetry" by Bjork
"Must Have Run All Day" by Glassjaw

In an odd bit of synchronicity, the mp3 for one of the songs I could have covered for my recipient last year just came on my random mp3 selection at the same time as I opened this thread. Cool!

Anyway, I'll do this again... it's fun. My song from last year "The Elements" is often considered highly :)

List to come.

That's right, Bjam. We'll stone ya like in the Wordplay video.

(Seriously, if Wreckdom could cover "...Baby One More Time" then Jason Mraz is fair game)

Had a great time with this last year, (geez, has it been a year already? Where the hell does the time go?) and I can abso-posi-lutely-tively guarantee my participation this year.

Titles, as well as whatever banner I'm submitting under, will be forthcoming.

Two quick notes- First, the songs are all self-hosted, so if any of the links do not work on the GOM 2003and GOM 2004pages , there is nothing I can do but remove them, which I won't because I am incredibly lazy when it comes to that shit. Second, someone somehow recently "discovereed" my cover from last year, and has posted a link to it at a fan site somewhere, and it's been downloaded from my site over 5000 times in the last two months. Sweet! My point being: Lots of people check out the GOM even if they don't participate, and covers are a great way to get "discovered" on the net- So everybody - especially you Newbies - sign up & lets ROCK!!!!!

-Bangs

ps- my wish list will be posted sometime soon

it's interesting what eddie points out about hits and downloads from the GOM site. the song i did last year (waltz you across texas by emmylou harris) is to this day regularly one of the top downloads on my site, and i just figured someone had bloglinked it or something. it doesn't hurt being at the top of the stream either.... :)

but like eddie say. he bangs. he bangs.

assuming I don't fail to deliver my themesong this weekend (leaving me only two remaining challenges to complete in short order) I would be happy to participate.

Niv, I will post my four song requests as soon as I deliver my themesong this weekend. :-)
