Purple Reign

Post by Niveous »

From the minds of Niveous and Glenn Case comes The Purple Reign.

This project came about as a result of a musician we will call Mr. Purple.

Mr. Purple is a great musician but there's one thing about him that irks us, his super obsession with copyrights. So we came up with an idea.

Each month, we and any other bands who would like to join us in this endeavour (the more bands the better) will make original songs using the titles of Mr. Purple songs. Then we will post them to our webspace and go on, until we have created an entire library of Mr. Purple tunes that aren't Mr. Purple tunes.

The small person in Minneapolis or at least someone is bound to take notice, especially if we get this in a large enough scale. So we need your help. The more songs, the bigger the project. You get the idea.

The first Purple Reign will start in November with Mr. Purple's first album: For You.

Who's with us?

----------------------

EDIT: Here is some more information

Here are the titles from "For You":

For You
In Love
Soft And Wet
Crazy You
Just As Long As We're Together
Baby
My Love Is Forever
So Blue
I'm Yours

A running tally with the number of submissions we have received for each title will be posted on purpletapes.com.

1. Pick the song titles that appeal to you.
2. Write as many songs as you like.
3. Submit the songs you are happy with.
4. Multiple artists will probably cover the same title. We welcome this.

Send completed songs to purpletapes@gmail.com before November 30th, 2007.

To answer a future question:

Mr. Purple freaks out when people do things like cover his songs. Some of these things have no financial loss for him attached. If indie band decides to do a Mr. Purple song for nothing more than love of Mr. Purple, why should he take offense? As unsigned musicians, we tend to take great joy out of our songs getting covered. Mr. Purple, on the other hand, takes it as some way of ripping him off, unless he gets monetary recompensation.

All in all, Mr. Purple just needs to chill.

Really like this idea... a lot! should we call a track title, so that way they don't get too doubled up or just hang with it a see what gets done?
it'd be cool if every title was completed!

It would be nice to have at least one representation of each title, but we don't see multiple artists covering the same title as a bad thing.

ROCK!

Please...anyone who is reading this. Don't get me wrong. I like Mr. Purple. I like his music. And if he wants to make cash off of every little drop of it, it is his prerogative. I just think that Mr. Purple needs to pick his battles. And the Purple Reign is all about poking fun at all this.

Each month, we'll do a different album. This month, we're doing his first album "For You".

The titles and the challenge of it gets more interesting as we get further into the catalog.

Shouldn't it be "4 U" and "Crazy U"?

Anyway, I hope that at least a few of the songs that get made are parodies. I can't help but think about all the great Prince parodies that never got made because he wouldn't let Weird Al do them.

I like this idea. It's fun and I received a private invitation in the mail, so how can I resist? I'll try to pay attention and write a song this month. What's the due date?

Original songs based on the song titles from "For You" will be accepted until November 30th 2007.

Here's the likely lineup from there:

December 2007: Prince
January 2008: Dirty Mind
February 2008: Controversy
March (and maybe April) 2008: 1999

We will see where it goes from there.

ROCK!

Hmm, sounds like fun. I'm with Niv on this, I like Prince. I would hope that if he heard any of this, he would enjoy the light hearted humor in it. I'm not willing to participate to be vindictive, but I am for a chuckle.

I have heard that he doesn't have much of a sense of humor for such things, but I would love to be proven wrong. I don't dislike the guy, and I certainly don't dislike his music. Few would argue that the man is a musical genius.
