Patience, everyone! Remember, volunteer effort... sorting through our spazzy naming conventions... etc.
I completely forgot about ID3 tags.

I didn't even know about id3 tags, after a quick look as to what they are, I will be putting them on all submissions from now on.

Re: The 8th Annual Gift of Music
(I submitted as Executive, with a friend.)
Here are some very brief, stream-of-consciousness reviews.
1. Salt in the Wound: I don't know the original. But this would make an awesome fighting game theme.
2. The House Carpenter: I don't know the original. But G+G is always* a fun time.
*Not always. But here it is!
3. Divine: I requested this. When I heard the start, I was concerned it would be overly twee, but... wow. You nailed it.
4. Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth: I played along with this on my slide whistle. Conclusion: This cover needs some slide whistle. I kid, I kid. Very well-done.
5. Stella: I don't know the original. This rocks, but I wonder if I need to contextualize it with the original.
At this point I got distracted. I'll try to get back for more feedback later.

I.e. the gom site has been updated. Yay! I can't wait to hear stuff. I'm glad Chris Cogott chose the Brodeur song as I can imagine that working quite well.

Yay!
I hesitate to post this, as I'm not sure all the songs are up there yet, but here is an m3u for your "Play All" pleasure.
Cut and paste everything below the dotted line into a notepad file, and save with an .m3u extension. Open the playlist in your favorite player and enjoy! Woo hoo!

Re: The 8th Annual Gift of Music
And anyway just copy-pasting that won't work due to the ellipsises.
I'm very very busy right now so I'm only listening to Chris Cogott's cover of The Remains of a Heart. It is pretty great! I've also posted about GOM to Twitter in a way which will hopefully cause Brodeur to listen to it, so maybe he'll like it too. :)

Hmm.. I didn't see the Boffo Yux Dudes song up there, so I resent it. Might have gotten lost in the either or something. There's gotta be a Banana Phone up there!

Re: The 8th Annual Gift of Music
I'm pretty grateful that Eddiebangs runs this thing and does all the hosting and website stuff and so on, but is there any chance that we could get the data in a way that's easier to fix the tags on? The HTML is pretty nasty and hard to parse (and it looks like it's made by a word processor or something). A simple spreadsheet or CSV or something would be a lot easier to work with.
If something doesn't already exist it's not a huge deal and I guess I could just do something myself with HTML::Parser or Greasemonkey or something, but I really like having my ID3 tags consistent in my file collection, since that makes iTunes a lot happier.

Just finished listening to everything, well done everyone. This was my first time following this project, and it has officially made me a fan. Looking forward to next year already.

Re: The 8th Annual Gift of Music
Got a PM from Eddiebangs that says he will be updating the pages, giving them a more pro, cleaner look. It's all a part of his plans to make it a bigger part of his label, Soul Tree Records, as the label grows.fluffy wrote:I'm pretty grateful that Eddiebangs runs this thing and does all the hosting and website stuff and so on, but is there any chance that we could get the data in a way that's easier to fix the tags on? SO GOOD! every single song was out of this world good. i dont know over half the originals and am having a great time listening, comparing, contrasting. an extra special big thanks to the tedward nixon experience for rocking out a killer version of a personal favorite. i am working up some rave reviews in my head, and will post them all at a later date
, i.e. when i have time to go through them all again. so happy to be allowed to be part of this, and excited to be a pert in the future.

Re: The 8th Annual Gift of Music
I'd like to thank Tomski for his rendition of Solo Flights by Eagles of Death Metal. It's funny that this is the second year in a row that my gifter did the cover with a ukulele. J$ last year, and AWESOME! What are the chances? But I must say, this is the best ukulele song about masturbation I've ever heard and done perfectly awesome!

In Firefox, the banner at the bottom of the page is obstructing the lower part of the grid, making the links for the last couple of entries inaccessible.Billy's Little Trip wrote:I see it now, but it's hidden behind a pop up at the bottom.
It looks fine in IE and in the iPhone browser.

Well, I heard yours via Anti-m's link above. Awesome by the way. I like what you did there. Yeah, I use FF. I clicked to block pop ups, but it still thought there was a pop up there and I couldn't click the last two songs. I'll open it in IE. Thanks.

Recovering from flu I just got to see the songs posted now...
And now thanks in public to fluffy for an excellent Beck cover.
I immediately made it into my default ringtone (and yes, that is meant as a compliment!
