You're active here, you're active there, you have a contest called "Song Fight", I think you need to go above and beyond to make us ok with that
I've already agreed with the fact that I should have asked & checked ahead of time, but you're wrong about 1 thing. I don't have a contest called Song Fight. It's still called SpinTunes...we just named 1 album "Song Fight" & we make 4 albums every single contest.
If you're going to start blurring the identity of your competition and Song Fight, without any forethought or communication to this community, then I'm going to get suspicious and think that you are acting out a premeditated plan for taking over our turf, and I'm gonna be pissed at you.
I didn't think any lines would be blurred. Most of the people involved in SpinTunes know about Song Fight because of how much I talk about it or because they've been involved with it at some point. A little more forethought & communication would have been wise...but again...I've already agreed with those points.
ust go about things in a way that makes it seem more like you are trying to offer an alternative, not a replacement, and participate in the community, and you'll get a lot less shit from the community.
I've listened to almost every fight since 2006 (and downloaded every song in the sites history through mid 2012), done a few dozen shitty reviews, formed friendships with people, and have followed other projects here as well (watched Song Fight live, followed Nur Eins (and judged 1), followed Gift Of Music, Songwriting Circles, etc...) I think I do participate, but I'm not going to post in the forum all the time. I'm not a forum person for the most part anymore. That part of me went away when other social media sites got big. I haven't used a forum on a regular basis since 2006 probably. Sorry if that doesn't meet someone elses standards of participation.

I've also never pushed anyone to do SpinTunes over Song Fight. I support both all the time. I even schedule the summer SpinTunes (we do 2 contest a year: winter & summer) after Nur Ein so that there's no conflict in Schedules. I can't really do that with Song Fight's main contest because it never stops. I've never offered up SpinTunes as a 'replacement'.

Do as you will, and argue all you want, but I guess if you want us not to be mad at you any more (which I think might be the case since you keep responding to the thread...) it's pretty simple to just put a few references to your inspiration/godmother Song Fight here and there. That'd probably go pretty far.

Like I've said to friends of mine before "You can win this argument and convince me that I'm wrong to be mad at you, but that won't make me not mad at you any more."

Just sayin', even venerable online songwriting contests like to be acknowledged when they influence something else. And the amount of acknowledgement should be commensurate only with how much you give a crap that said venerable online songwriting contest will be upset if it doesn't get that acknowledgement.

There is indeed room for all sorts of songwriting contests in the world. Let's all go flame the Eurovision forums instead of continuing this bickering. Which I am as guilty of as the next person.

Can we really? We can start ranting about how Switzerland's entry is a thinly veiled Salvation Army promotion and root for Norway's "I Feed You My Love".

Song Fight & Nur Ein are both mentioned on the "FAQ" of SpinTunes, and there's a link to your site right on the front page. Every Song Fight review I've posted on my site has links back to Song Fight. Aside from the album screw up, if I awknowledge you anymore people really might start blurring the identity of the contest.

I've taken part in the last two spintunes and the most recent nur ein as well as 18 song fights now ... what I like about spintunes and nur ein is the way the songs are judged and ranked, it's interesting to get that kind of detailed feedback on your work. The online voting system at Song Fight means that the results have to be taken with a grain of salt (same goes for the "popular vote" over at spintunes) and there's sometimes not much in the way of feedback. I guess my point is, that the main reason I take part in these things is to get feedback so ... the better the feedback is, the more I'll like the system.

I like the nur ein system the most because there's not a "popular vote" element which is just bunk imo - online voting is always manipulated. I also like that the nur ein judges (and the challenges) seem to be more focused on music rather than lyrics (SpinTunes is more focused on lyrics) which is more in line with my interest.

That said; the regular song fights are great and I've had a lot of fun taking part in them. I look at them as the main course with nur ein & spintunes being sort of desserts (or maybe it's regular season vs. playoffs?)

As far as the Negative Reinforcement guy goes: I have no problem with the concept, I do have a problem with him being absurdly unfunny and seemingly completely ignorant about music.

(I voted "other" - but I understand Spud's annoyance --- I find it amazing the amount of work/effort Spud must put into this thing to keep it going)

My point seems to be missed by some. I have no problem with Spin having his own competition. I agree, it's the future, and more power to him - we obviously are on the same wavelength there. What I have a problem with is his promotional approach.

Many of my issues have been addressed by others. Posting his reviews on his own blog with only a link on these boards so that you are forced to go to his site if you want to see them is a perfect example. He has said himself that "the whole point of running a blog is to get people to visit it (Wed Jan 20, 2010 10:38 pm). This is just the start. There are whole threads dedicated to promoting his competitions.

It is a well-know fact that I have not been happy about all this. My first response to Spin was "I like yellow", but "Is it so difficult to cut and paste your reviews?" followed quickly. I have numerous posts complaining about the self-promotional activities. I have been grumpy about this for a long time.

I didn't REALLY get upset until he invited me to be a judge. Again, I have said why. I didn't think it had anything to do with my musicianship. Just my position, and was a transparent effort to win me over. The idea that everything would be OK if he just made me a judge was insulting. But still, I tempered my feelings because he does provide a different service than we do, and a lot of you have fun writing songs for his competitions.

It was naming his latest round "Song Fight" that put it over the top. It's like he doesn't care that it pisses me off. Anyone can make a news magazine and broadcast it wherever they want. Call it "60 Minutes" and watch the shit hit the fan. Just because we don't have the resources or the financial incentives doesn't make us fair game, or does it?

Just explaining myself again, because there seems to have been some misunderstanding. The more competitions the better. But there's only one Song Fight.
