Who I Am (Pete Townshend)

Post by AJOwens »

Townshend's world is focussed on his work projects, which involve songwriting, composition, and some charitable and quasi-religious activities. This makes the book an interesting read for musicians, but less so for those who like celebrity gossip (though there are a few juicy tidbits). His anecdotes sometimes seem random and even pointless, and connecting threads are poorly woven in, if at all. You'll hear a lot about his girlfriends, but if If you want to keep track, I suggest you start a cheat sheet early.

The same workaholic, outward-focussed tendencies make him unrealized to himself, to some extent. He has a lot to say about some deeply personal issues, but there's a curious detachment to his commentary. In terms of his behaviour toward others, he seems unaware or unconcerned about who he actually is (ironically enough). Yet it would be remiss not to recognize his fundamental attempt at honesty; and more than occasionally, his honesty is not only successful, but searing.
