Something Rotten in Songland

Post by jb »

So they kind of are doing a songfightey concept on NBC, starting May 28: https://www.nbc.com/songland

Or I guess it's a cross between Shark Tank and The Voice for songwriters.

Watched the trailer on YouTube just now, and they want me to believe that the "judges" hear a song and instantly can play it back and make improvements, without being told key or chords.

So that's fishy. I suspect that they've all had time to sit with each song and learn it etc and then present some ideas. Sort of a scripted critique session.

But maybe not, maybe they're just that good.

Anyway, are you gonna watch? Man life's too short.

Here is the YouTube trailer:

I admit, when I watched this I threw up in my mouth a bit. I just can't bring myself to watch this kind made-for-tv pap, even when it's about a subject I'm quite interested in. I already spend too much time watching videos about music theory, production, and songwriting as it is.

You know what this song could use? More autotune! And some more soulful wailing!

Funny how they don't talk about how the songwriters are actually the ones making the money...

Looks like basically the TV equivalent of the bullshit pop music featured in the show. I threw up in my mouth too. Ugh.

Now _that's_ what I call music! :baaaaaarrrrrfffffff:

I watched an episode last night (my wife had it recorded.) And it made me feel both uneasy and interested at the same time. It was the John Legend episode. All in all it was cool to see. If nothing else, hearing the song as originally written and then hearing the end result was an interesting process. It was also an uneasy one at first. But I guess those who entered understood that the producers were gonna be cowriters/heavily involved from the get go.

Ah you actually watched it! Tell me more... I haven't seen this (and didn't really intend to watch it) but I'm curious about it. How did it start out, what types of changes got made along the way, how did it end up, how did the songwriter feel about it?
Are these all singer/songwriters or are they writing songs for someone else to perform?
