Welcome back!

Just out of curiosity, whereabouts in Cleveland do you live? I went to college there.

Congratulations on being engaged!

I went to Case also. I used to go to the Cedar Lee all the time. And Whitmore's, Aladdin's, Tommy's, Que Tal, Grumm's, the Grog Shop (before it moved), Arabica, the Barking Spider (my favorite place), Nighttown, and many other places. I liked living there, except for the long cold snowy winters.

Where did the Grog Shop used to be? Allyson and I go there all the time. I just saw the Weakerthans there a couple weeks ago. I guess Cleveland's a pretty small place, when all's said and done, because we actually go to all those places fairly regularly. And the Winking Lizard. Yum.

First snow was the day before yesterday, but it didn't last long. It was quickly replaced with lightning and hail.

How 'bout them indeed? This after twenty years of rooting for the New Orleans Saints, now I move to a different town where the local team is in the middle of ending a long-standing slump. Hmm.

Thanks for the well-wishes, everyone, and I'll see you on the battlefield!

The Grog Shop used to be at Coventry and Mayfield, on the other side of Coventry. I think the owners of that building were going to put in condos or some crap, but that hadn't happened yet the last time I was there. It's been a few years, though, as pretty much everybody I knew who lived there has moved. My college band played the Grog Shop many times. I think another consequence of Cleveland being a small city is that it's fairly easy to get gigs, or at least it was.

The University Circle/Cleveland Heights area is great because it is pretty small but it's packed with good restaurants and other fun stuff. I forgot to list Big Fun, the novelty shop in Coventry, and the Cinematheque movie theater at CIA, and probably lots more. I think I really miss the Barking Spider the most, as that place was so unique and so charming. Great little atmosphere, great beers, and free live music every night, some of it really good. My favorite was seeing the little gospel choir with drummer/bassist/keyboardist on Sunday nights. OK, I Googled it and they're called the "Prayer Warriors" and it looks like they're still playing the Spider, on the second Sunday of every month. I'm not religious but they are awesome and also make me want to praise Jesus.

Oh, and if you like rollercoasters and haven't already done so, make the trip to Cedar Point next summer.

I think I actually kind of miss Cleveland. Weird.

Understandable. Nostalgia's tricky like that. I lived in rural Honduras for four months, and sometimes I trick myself into missing that. So yeah.

We'll have to check out the Prayer Warriors at some point; I've never heard of them. Allyson's not crazy about the Barking Spider, but most of her friends go there a lot, so consequently, she goes there a lot. Hehe.

So evidently, the Grog Shop used to be like three blocks from where it is now? Now it's right next door to Chipotle on Coventry, about a block from Tommy's and Big Fun. (And, incidentally, my favorite used book shop, Mac's Backs, which is right between Tommy's and Big Fun.) Whatever. It's still a really fun place, and they host great bands. We saw Electric Six there a couple months ago, and Dick Valentine remarked, "There's a lot of sexy women in the club tonight... but I see all the hottest honeys going into the CHIPOTLE!" Then, when the set was over, he collapsed into the crowd and gave me a huge sweaty hug.

Memories...

Cleveland with long cold snowy winters!?!? WTF!? It's just down the road from my place on the shores of beautiful Moreton Bay. It is sunny all the time!

Or is there a Cleveland in the USA too? It must be named after the Queensland one

all I know about Cleveland is that there is some flooded rock quarry a few miles outside of it. A couple of hillbilly friends of mine in the past wouldn't shut up about it. (plus some guy who robbed my apartment was from there and he too wouldn't shut up about it)

oh, and hey Generic.

Wow, I didn't know there's a Chipotle in Coventry. That kind of sucks since Que Tal was so damn good back in the day. I saw a great "secret" Cibo Matto show at the "old" Grog, as well as Jonathan Richman several times, and many other bands. Anyway, welcome back. Sorry I hijacked your thread. ;)
