Song Fight! Live 2020 Berkeley CANCELLED
IN-REAL-LIFE SONG FIGHT LIVE IS NOT HAPPENING FOR 2020
Next year's live show will be the 20th Song Fight! Live! Plus it's around the 20th anniversary of Song Fight! We SF Bay Area locals thought would be cool to host here as the very first Song Fight! Live back in 2001 happened in SF. We'd probably try to do it in the June-August time frame so folks who are school teachers might be able to make it.

The wife and I thought it might be in CA this year and are tentatively exploring possibilities (she wants to see CA and I want to stay married, so...) After we had so much fun in Madison, we're gonna try to make it for 2020, too.

Stuff and Nonsense (and Laurie) are definitely up for this! Our school year finishes on the 20th(ish) July so a late July/August would work for us xx

So, what's where Hot Lunch used to be? Can we try to do the gig there? Even if it isn't a normally music-oriented venue? (keeping in mind that in the early days many of the show venues were just at like random cafes and whatever)

Any idea what that place's address was...? So far a wee bit of searching hasn't turned up much info for me.

No clue. The old SFLive page doesn't give the address and the show was organized on the old Dumbrella board.

I'll definitely try to make it!
Was Hot Lunch the name of a venue in San Francisco?

Yes. I was introduced to Song Fight by some band mates who went to that show. We held a number of other songfight themed concerts in that same space for a couple of years when it was called the Accordion.

Ah, looks like it's an auto repair shop now. Weird.
I'm actually really surprised the venue was in that part of town to begin with though.
EDIT: Wait no the auto repair shop is at 380, and the gymnastics club next door is 390. I'm guessing the gymnastics club expanded to fill in the now-gone space.

I'm fairly certain the auto repair shop was always there on the street level. This space was up a flight of stairs. It was basically someone's home that rented it out as an event space.

Oh, I just looked at the flyer. That's obviously for a later Song Fight! Presents show, not the original Song Fight! Live. Are you sure that was at The Accordion?
382 being up a flight of stairs would make sense with what's on StreetView though.

It was the same space under a different name. It was called Hot Lunch when the first Songfight Live was there, and then was called the Accordion when we started putting on SF Presents shows.

Oh okay. I had the impression that Hot Lunch was a deli where you could get an actual hot lunch, or something.

Re: Song Fight! Live #20 in 2020 for Song Fight! 20th anniversary SF
Hot Lunch was a trial name, this couple was trying to start it up as a venue while living in the back. It was basically an empty room. The toilet didn’t work. Gaby and Mo played a hundred Prince covers. Ranch On Suede was there. Add Music was there in a homemade sharpied Hilfiger t-shirt and a car he drove from denver with a giant crack in the windshield. Frank and i flew out on kind of a whim because frontalot said hey let’s do this thing. I can’t remember anything else. It was that kind of show.

Song Fight! Live is sorely lacking in people being blackout drunk these days.

I wanted to come to the original show but I wasn't feeling so great about my gender presentation at the time.
I'm kind of fine with folks not being blackout drunk anymore? I have issues with folks treating alcohol as the purpose of a thing instead of it being an accessory to the thing, and I also like to think that most of us have matured at least somewhat. Plus, it turns some folks into complete jerks.

Oh we were there for the music, don’t worry.
Oh at that show we improvised the live fight, the title of which was “Hot Lunch”. It wasn’t until a year later that we had the idea to announce a live fight titlle a week before.
And Brandon provided the drum set, the floor tom of which was tuned exquisitely. One of the owners sat in on drums for somebody’s live fight song.
