Song Fight! Live IRL 2023

Post by Lunkhead »

Let's make an IRL event happen this year! Maybe like July? August?

I think I could probably host here in Bend. It's relatively easy for folks on the West coast, particularly Oregon and Washington, to get here, by plane or car. Folks from farther away may wind up having to connect through Portland or Seattle. We could likely get a venue with an outdoor stage, food carts, beer, and rando's. But I'm not necessarily laying claim to it, if other folks are eager to host that's great.

Thanks for kicking this off Lunkhead! I think it would be great to keep an online aspect as well, so maybe as a two night event, one could be an in person show and then next night could be a streaming/ view party?

Any thoughts on ways to make the live fight hybrid? Could there be a way to alternate live and prerecorded performances?

I'm all for still having an online event too but to me it feels like it will be a lot simpler if we keep IRL and online totally separate. It's already complicated enough to plan one or the other, let alone both as one thing. We've gotten good at doing one or the other but we have no experience having a mixed event as far as I know? I don't personally feel confident volunteering to operate that but maybe somebody else does? IRL also events depend on booking a venue and making travel plans, so they require a lot more lead time, and to enable folks tied to school schedules to come we usually try to do them during the summer. Online events don't really have those dependencies and scheduling constraints.

I vote for 2 separate events for IRL/Online. Not that my vote counts. ;)

I would definitely love to see us go back to live shows, and also continue doing online shows, but ideally the live shows would be the emphasis, and online shows could be primarily made up of recordings of the in-person ones with added sets for those who couldn't make it.

My town is 100+ miles away from a real airport (and I'm lazy) but the idea of taking the weight off of the regulars seems like a great way of helping out the community. Alas, this year would be out anyway due to prior commitments.

That being said, the Mrs. and I have tentatively penciled in the live fight for the summer depending on the exact date. The actual location doesn't really matter to us, we'll use mixed transportation if necessary.

It sounds like it would be awesome and I fully support it but will remain absent for obvious reasons.

It would be wonderful if you were able to livestream it for the fools like me, or record and replay it later.

Maybe it would be possible to play some pre-recorded sets from the absent fighters in between live sets?

Any which way it ends up - let the music play… ❤️

I am close enough to Bend to be very interested. I would be interested in setting the date as soon as possible so that I could start planning out and putting the technology in place to do a live fight in which entrants both present and remote could participate.

We usually do set up a live stream when we do one IRL although it's generally very bare bones, like a phone or a laptop somewhere pointing at the stage streaming to YouTube or Facebook and probably cutting out sometimes when no one there is tending to it...

If it's going to be here it's going to be July or August time frame, assuming I can get something booked then.

For the same reasons as always, I won't be able to do an actual IRL event ( as awesome as that would be), but I'm more than happy to do an online event again, especially since I know what I'm doing a bit better with video editing software now.

Love the idea of getting back to live shows. Now that I'm an east coaster though, I might have to sit this one out. Would love to see y'all 💕

Bend isn't settled, someone could step up to do an East Coast show. The last live one was in the middle and the pattern is long-ruined.

The wife has started looking at options for travelling (assuming it'll be in Oregon) so I think we're like 90% in for going (even if it moves.) However, I cannot take off work basically from July 10th through the 20th. Otherwise, unless something changes, we're good for other dates in July and August (and September if that ends up being a possibility.)

I am in favor of Bend mostly because it is a nice place and not terribly difficult for me to get to. But if it's on the east coast I might be able to talk mob01d into coming and we could have a High Density reunion. I might try that anyway, though.

Just checked in to see if there was a Live going on this year on the West Coast.
I was thinking how fun it would be to do a Blue tribute by playing some sonofsupercar songs for which he wrote the lyrics.
Air Traffic, Death Plunge, Red…
Alas, if it was in Berkeley I could get my whole band onboard.

I miss these things.
All of the shows in those perfect rock spaces in San Francisco back in the early aughts. Good times.

Looks like FAWM is trying to have a fawmstock (songfight live equivalent) in the PNW at the end of August. And I found a Fawmer who lives in Bend who is interested in songfight live and songfight in general. All that to say, we are still a probably depending on timing etc.,

Hey folks! So, I need to get in gear to try to organize this. However, I have heard anecdotally from the two folks I've met here so far who are gigging that at least one place in town is already booked through the end of summer. The booker there said she hadn't even been hunting down bands, she'd just been getting an overwhelming amount of interest in gigs from local musicians. It's possible that I've somehow already missed the boat on landing us two nights at a suitable venue. If anybody else out there thinks they have a reasonable line of sight toward hosting a Song Fight Live IRL this year, I would say, maybe you should start working on it. That way we'll have two irons in the fire, hopefully one of which will work out.
