1/5/17 RIP Hoops

Complain about your schedule. Apparently people like that sort of thing.

1/5/17 RIP Hoops

Post by Niveous »

Yesterday, musician Paul Turrell passed away. He was better known in FAWM circles as Hoops or Hoopstank. Here at Songfight, he made a few appearances.

Solo, he appeared in the Quiet Storm and Precipitation fights.

He was also part of Mickey Skylark, which appeared in 4 fights including winning the Be Careful With That fight.

He was also responsible for that song listed as Dr. Octagon.

I didn't get to know the guy beyond his music but I know that folks like J$ and Elaine DiMasi were friends of his. Condolences.

Thanks for being a part of Songfight, Paul Turrell. Your music will live on.

Ah, damn, thanks, Niv. I know he wasn't really a songfighter as much as a FAWM/5090 guy; but he was a very close friend and I have just lost a week (so far) unable to do anything but grieve. j$

Was he one of the people that did the thing where they gave us lyrics and chords and had us record the song? Right now I don't remember what that's called and the site is down in prep for this year.

I know I'm super late to the thread, but he is the fellow that I referred to as inspiration for my Old Friends entry (as well as others) and at least five other songs since his passing. One of the good guys and I still feel his loss as an immediate wound. They say time heals....

I forgot you knew him, Pigfarmer Jr. I also forgot to post this, in case people are interested - a bunch of (mainly) UK FAWMers and 5090ers got together in April to play some Hoops songs as a 'memorial'. Here's a youtube list of half a dozen of them or so far. (yes I screw up the first harmony on 'Shoeland'. I think Hoops would have liked that)!

(sorry I can't figure out how to [youtube] a list).

Thank you for sharing that, J$. I'm watching now.

I collab'd with Hoops fairly regularly and was even in a "band" with him and Nancy. It's odd how I always took for granted there would be another collab along at some point and now that there won't be...
