DEcember 13 and 14, 2008
Here.
Today we're hosting a birthday party for my father-in-law. Should be pretty fun.
As of today there are 12 shopping days left till the American Christmas. So I'm sure this weekend my wife and I will be making our list and checking it twice - hopefully get a lot taken care of so that next weekend we can worry about other things.
QOTD 1: What's your favorite holiday music this time of year?
QOTD 2: DO you shop early or late? Explain.

Re: DEcember 13 and 14, 2008
Favorite holiday music - we always listened to The Nutcracker at tree-decorating time when I was growing up so I have good feelings about that... but these days I put it on random with the Charlie Brown Christmas score, and Over the Rhine holiday music, and the Veggietales Christmas album, and a couple other things.
Shop late. That's 'cause I put things off a lot. Slacker. Also because some of my family STILL have not given us any ideas.

American Christmas? I wasn't aware that the only Christians left in the world were in the U.S.
QotD: I don't really like holiday music. I sort of like the Rudolph song but only because of the extra stuff you can sing inbetween the lines.
QotD2: I started my shopping about a month ago, but I still have a couple things to get before I'm done. I've definatly spent more this year than ever before. Probably too much.

DRC: The Zoo still hasn't gotten back to me. In this case, I'm not so sure that no news is good news.
QotD1: I don't really care for Holiday music. At least, no more or less than any other music.
QotD2: Well, I already bought my wife's gift, and, when she found out what it was, gave it to her. She also already bought my gift, and when I found out what it was, gave it to me.
I still need to shop for my brother, mom, and dad. My brother will be easy; we'll just walk into Best Buy, point out things we like, and buy them for each other. Traditionally, I've just gotten my mother something Beatles-related that came out that year (for instance, last couple of years, I got her The U.S. Vs. John Lennon on DVD, and Love), but, strangely, there doesn't seem to be any such product out this year. With my Dad, I'm almost always stumped until a couple of days before Christmas. Last year, I didn't think of anything decent until the day of, and I returned a far inferior gift to get him the much better gift later, citing shipping issues.

qotd2: I am not big on present-exchanging. I'll participate in White Elephant exchanges and if I happen to come across something perfect for someone else I'll buy it but I don't specifically go out gift shopping anymore (and I don't expect anyone else to do it for me either). I think it's silly to have a specific pre-arranged time of year to do nice things for others.

QotD1:
Low's Christmas album gets some play. I like the cold, dark feel of the Bright Eyes Christmas album. Oh, and check out Grandaddy's "Alan Parsons in a Winter Wonderland". It's the only christmas song for music geeks I know of.
QotD2: As early as possible. But I'm more inclined to make something instead.

Shopping: we've pretty much given up on buying family presents, so our shopping this year consisted of buying a bunch of clothing to send to a church we support in Mexico. So we're done, that stuff got taken down there Thursday and Friday of this past week (got a green light at the border every time, didn't have to pay any duty or do any inspections!).

As a Texan who has spent several Christmases in a trailer, I can't help but feel a little bit of nostalgia every time I hear "Merry Christmas from the Family" by Robert Earl Keen. It makes me feel all warm inside.

Re: DEcember 13 and 14, 2008
Q1: I have all the Beatles fan club Christmas albums that I usually put on this time of year. I like funny holiday songs like the Kinks' Father Christmas, the Waitresses' Christmas Rapping, stuff like that. Most of the rock xmas stuff is pretty crappy, though. I purposely avoid a couple of the local stations because they'll be playing Billy Squier's lame tune every other hour, or David Bowie and Bing Crosby. I can do without that garbage.
Q2: Both. I started early, I seem to still be going. In the days when my Jewish ex-wife wasn't my ex, and Chanukah was early, that was a great way to get everything done way ahead of time. I have no such help now, but it's really okay.

QOTD L: I know this sounds lame, but Barbra Streisand and Chicago around Christmas time always makes me excited like a saucer eyed little boy waiting for tasty food, smiling relatives and excitement. But of course the even older standards, like Burl "Icle Ivanhoe" Ives and Nat King Cole make me mellow.
QOTD S: My wife shops all year long and I shop late, like REALLY late, like, I haven't even started yet.

Re: DEcember 13 and 14, 2008
Ditto. My kids love that one. I generally hate xmas songs. I can take the instrumentals much better. But now and then the oldies (Frank, Mitch Miller, etc.) make me smile, since my mom listened to those a lot. And I like Chanukah's melodies when sang well, and the candle thing is sweet. These holidays bum me out more than not, though, but New Years makes it all OK again. I see the abstract year change as a more important event to celebrate.Generic wrote:Oh, there's Chrion Beta Prime by Jonathan Coulton.

QotD1: I think I say it every year, but the Jimmy Smith album Christmas Cookin' is still easily my favorite.
QotD2: Most of it gets done early and online. But every year it seems we end up waiting for something or other (usually from Amazon) to arrive just before Xmas.

On Thanksgiving there was a show at Skippers Smoke House where several bands got together and performed the White Album in its entirety. I didn't know about it and it sold out anyway. Hopefully they'll do it again sometime.Spud wrote:It's the 40th anniversary of the White Album, Jon. There are bound to be some special promotions out there, no?

QotD1: Country Christmas albums. IMO they're the only ones that ever get it right. I HATE R&B Christmas songs. Pop Christmas songs are hit and miss as 'rock' Christmas stuff. There is good but in a lot of bad. (I love Jewl's Silent Night)
QotD2: I rarely Christmas shop. I rarely have money for it and I rarely have anybody to really buy for. Two separate Christmases I have bought for a girlfriend that never gets the presents because they've dumped me right before Christmas. ACTUALLY, in both cases they just stopped calling and coming around leaving me in a sort of Christmas shopping limbo.

Re: DEcember 13 and 14, 2008
Hobz, I'm guessing you grew up with country Christmas songs that your parents played. I'm sure many still get that warm fuzzy feeling from songs they grew up with this time of year. That's the reason that I like Streisand this time of the year. I don't really like her, but it brings back good memories when Babs sings.
