This is totally OK for me (but remember, I am just speaking for myself here and there are four other judges whose mileage may vary). The term "origin story" usually means the story of how a superhero (or supervillain) gained their respective superpowers etc.; however, as Wikipedia notes, "origin story" may also refer to mythology, and appropriately so, since those ancient origin stories (Greek and Norse, especially) heavily influenced modern comic books as well.

I am well aware of the fact that the combination of "This Is Not a Test" and "origin story" may yield a lot of experiment-gone-awry-generating-monster type songs. If you choose to do that kind of thing, that's fine, but please be just a tad... original. Hee hee.

Got my lyrics. Originally was thinking the whole "bitten by radioactive spider" thing, but then went more original by being less original. Or something.

Origin stories can also be somewhat ordinary. I'm reminded of Rabbit and Ram's No Rush which is a SongFight song with an origin story.

For me, artistic license is exactly what the challenges are meant to encourage. Just nail it, everyone. Remember my tedious dictum - 'if you have to explain it afterwards, you already failed'.

I never would have guessed that "Origin Story" referred to what Noma said:
"The term "origin story" usually means the story of how a superhero (or supervillain) gained their respective superpowers etc."
I am not a comic book guy either.

Suffice to say - the immediately obvious response to the title and challenge to me, is unlikely to be obvious, (or possibly even comprehensible) to someone with a different cultural background to myself.

But thank you for the reminder - 'if you have to explain it afterwards, you already failed'.
I won't explain anything.

I find it disconcerting that you spend paragraphs detailing exactly what you expect, and then say "please be a tad original."

I encourage the judges to keep an open mind with their expectations. It's sometimes difficult to watch the yearly Nur Ein contortions over whether people matched the title and challenge correctly, vs the strength of the songcraft.

I think I agree with that. However, I have been in song writing contests where they expect explanations no matter what. Which makes me think some people like to hear such things. I'm guilty of enjoying rockumentaries, I watch DVD extras. Perhaps explaining something, is different than "having to" explain something.

Shit. I'm in trouble.

I am in Thargomindah, about 1000km west of Brisbane on the edge of the Sturt Stoney Desert.

I brought my old MacBook with me so I could nur Ein. But the MacBook is dead. It has ceased to be. It has shuffled off this mortal coil and gone to meet its maker. It is an ex MacBook.

I have my work Windows laptop with me though.
I have never used it for recording.

Quick - what is a cheap (or free) and easy to use DAW I can download?

Audacity is the obvious way to go. Some songfighters, like iVeg (I think) or myself use it for all their recording, mixing etc. And it's still 100% free.

Yeah... I believe that didn't come across the way I wanted it to do. I was just trying to encourage contestants to let their own ideas go wild, I was trying to say "Origin story can be interpreted in many ways, so you don't have to do the comic book thing, but it's OK if you want to do it." And that last sentence about being a bit original was semi-joking. Seriously, I'm not the kind of guy to vote your song all the way down because of stupid lyrics. That would be throwing stones inside a glass house (you can ask j$ about that ;))

REAPER is a good choice. You can use it for free indefinitely, but it nags you more and more on startup.
