I suddenly miss Ross. I think he would have posted this Monday morning.
I have no opinion about the title, I just thought this was funny and wanted to share:
Brain Teaser

Here's the Brain Teaser from Essential Teacher, Spring 2004: Is it teeth marks or tooth marks? Only one is correct. Which is it, and what’s the rule if there is one?

The first correct reply was sent in by Evelyn Uyemura of El Camino College, Torrance, California, in the United States. Here’s what Evelyn wrote:

I say it's tooth marks, no matter how many teeth made the marks. The rule is that when a noun is used as an adjective, the singular form is used. Thus we don't use teethpaste buttoothpaste, and we don't put our shoes in a shoesbox but a shoebox, and we don't buy our books at a booksstore but a bookstore. (This being English, there are exceptions, of course. We keep our clothes in a clothes closet because there is no singular with the same meaning as clothes.)

You hit the nail right on the head, Evelyn! We can add to this by saying that the first element in a noun adjunct (two nouns written as separate words, like post office) or a compound noun (two nouns written as one, like bedroom), which, as you said, acts as an adjective, is never made plural since adjectives are never made plural in English. Thank you for such a clear, succinct answer, Evelyn.

Some more examples that clearly show how the first element is never pluralized are as follows:

the light from the stars = starlight
a player for CDs = a CD player
a kennel for dogs = a dog kennel

Hmmm, interesting. I would say in this instance, it would be 'teeth' marks to distinguish from multiple marks caused by a single tooth. Two of the examples given , 'player' and 'kennel' are thus because they only have room for one item, CD or a dog, at a time. A dog kennel for more than one dog is/are referred to as 'Dog Kennels', at least round my way. Because there's more than one kennel to house the multiple dogs.

The 'starlight' example doesn't fit that theory, though. Maybe because all that light is consideered merged into one before you experience it? A little weak, I know.

Cerrtainly if someone aid to me 'look at my tooth-marks', it wouldn't be clear whether it was a lot of marks all made at once or a single tooth biting over and again. Also, no-one says 'tooth-marks'. :)

I have some fabulous photos of my lower left buttock if you are over 18 and have a valid credit card.

They should clear all this up.

We understood, at least. We're going to enter anyway because by the time we'd heard the news we'd already recorded the core tracks for our song and written the lyrics and melodies.

I love my family to bits and I think I'm a pretty good dad but when everyone's home on a Saturday, stomping around upstairs, flushing the toilet, clanging pots and pans, our giant dog galloping around...and I'm down in the basement trying to record for the first chance I've had all week: my interior monologue is like FUCK FUCK FUCK SHUT THE FUCK UP EVERYBODY.

Hope you get it done, BGM. I need to do vocals, mix and mail tomorrow, before I leave for work at 2:30PM. Im at work now and on what they call the Force List. Meaning, if there's need for bodies due to callouts etc., I will get forced to work til 7AM. Then Back in for 3PM. Not a chance to finish if that happens. Crossing fingers...now!

Doh, no excuses here, had plenty of time, I just didn't make it happen and I'm about to head into work for the rest of the day. Wasn't for lack of trying though. I wrote some alright lyrics and recorded a few different basslines and drum takes, but never figured out how to put it together. Oh well, maybe next year! Good luck to the rest of you.

Haven't yet heard any of those songs, but after reading lyrics I must say that Cavedwellers, I love your interpretation of "current" events.

I'm suspicious anytime bgm posts one of his
excuses, because he usually drops something cool. I think it's a psyche out.
