[Meta] Nur Ein website will begin correcting MP3 tags

Post by Manhattan Glutton »

In the near future, I plan on adjusting the website to overwrite specific tags so that listeners who download the songs can understand what and who they're listening to on players that display track information.

The tags that will be overwritten are: (edit: adding some from here)
  • Name - this will be the round title
  • Artist - this will be the band name that was entered in that particular Nur Ein
  • Album Artist - "Various Artists"
  • Album - this will be the Nur Ein competition that the song appeared in - eg "Nur Ein XI"
  • Year - the year of the contest (Nur Ein XIII is "2018")
  • Track Number - the round of the title in that particular Nur Ein (0 - 7)
  • Sort Name - Name in all caps, possibly with "The" removed
  • Sort Artist - Artist in all caps, possibly with "The" removed
  • Sort Album - Album in all caps, possibly with "The" removed
All other tags will be left as-is. This will be retroactive and the original tags will be saved as backup.

I do not expect this to be contentious, but I don't want to accidentally spring this on people. Please let me know if you have concerns.

Edit: I suppose one thing that might be contentious is how to group and number albums. My current strategy is to generally make it easy to download and order a single band's entries for a contest.

I'm fine with that, though in my own iTunes I make them as a compilation (Artist = "Various Artists", Name = {Round Title} - {Artist Name}, compilation box checked), that might be too difficult to do programmatically. Definitely better than leaving them as whatever random thing the submitter put in the tags, or blank.

There is a non-standard tag that many players support for album level artist, that could be set to "Various Artists", in addition to what Mike laid out.

I could also set that tag to Various Artists on the website, if that's desirable. Any other tags?

Yeah, iTunes uses "Album Artist" to group albums. So that would be great if it was set to Various Artists. Thanks!!
