I had no idea. You'd have thought since I've participated in spintunes more than Nur Ein that I would be aware of such things.

Not quite - that SpinTunes Challenge gave you a muted clip, but it was to inspire you to write a dance song that would match the clip.
Similar form but I think this Nur Ein challenge stands on its own merit.

https://spintown.bandcamp.com/album/spi ... 10-round-4

"The Final Step - Normally dance is inspired by music. For the final challenge of SpinTunes 10, you will need to write a song inspired by dance...and not just any dance...this one. We should be able to play your song over this video...and have people think it's what he was dancing to."

I've been trying to write down time codes for cuts and fades in this video and work out what my plan is for this challenge, and just putting it out there that this might be the worst Nur Ein challenge ever.

As far as I can make out there's around 20 cuts in this under 3 minute video. Some of them are hard cuts, some of them are cross fades. Some shots are held for 20-30 seconds, others for only 1 or 2. It's an absolute mess, and we're expected to make a song that syncs up with it? I'm also assuming that the longstanding Songfight hatred of any instrumental music in any form hasn't disappeared overnight? I've looked up a couple of different soundtracks for this scene from the Fall of the House of Usher and they're all droning, atmospheric compositions - in short, instrumental film soundtrack music. To expect us to write structured "songs" that sync up with this randomly chopped out clip seems near impossible.

Anyway, rant over. I look forward to hearing the unlistenable stuff we all come up with trying to sync up to this.

Hey, what DAW do you use? A bunch of them have video capabilities, so you can drag the video into the timeline and sort out the structure in situ instead of going bananas with writing down timecodes. I use Logic, which is very easy for this, and apparently Reaper also works with video.

I'm fully expecting to be cut either on this round or the previous and have decided to throw the challenge out of the window. I'll write something and if I can make it fit great, if not, whatever.

Also I have just noticed that the challenge hasn't been marked as Non-optional like the other ones.

I'm only one judge but I'm not looking to be too critical on hard cuts. I, personally, am not looking for a score to the video rather a song that fits the video.

I guess I did assume your song and the video should start at the same time.

Just thought that after weeks of doing this, the fact that these challenges are never optional would be... a fact.

One judge's view here.Trying to hit every dramatic beat in the clip is insanity. Make a song that hits certain beats so that when a viewer watches and listens, they feel like the two go together.

And instrumentals still don’t fly.

I concur with the other two judges who've weighed in already. I'm not expecting some musical element to align with every cut. We intentionally avoiding using the words "soundtrack" or "score" so as to avoid suggesting instrumental soundtrack pieces (though for the record, I personally am not opposed to an instrumental as long as I can see the connection to both title and challenge). We also didn't want to give the impression that you needed to provide sound effects for every action in the clip.

I suggest perhaps pretending it's the song in the background of a dramatic beat in the movie (though pop song scoring would be anachronistic for this clip, surely you've seen shows and movies where a song plays over a dramatic moment!). It doesn't need to be exact! Maybe you want to sync your lyrics to the action somehow, or maybe you'll just capture the emotional vibe of the video clip. Either way I'll be fine with it.

It should go without saying that "Being fine with your take on the challenge" and "Liking your song" are two dramatically different bars to clear for everyone. :ugeek:

Side note: am I the only person in the world who actually enjoys composing to video?

Side side note: I feel like I stole at least part of my melody from somewhere. If someone could tell me where, I'd love to know.

I don't consider it a requirement for each of the remaining competitors to upload a Youtube video of their song playing over the source video, but I do appreciate the convenience afforded to me as a judge by those who have done this.

Thank you all!

I can do a quick sync of song and video tonight if anyone needs it. I can either host it on my site or upload it to youtube as a private link and additionally, I can send it to anyone who wants it for their own use. I'll not be home for another 8 hours, though. (approximately 6pm CDT)

Let me know if you'd like me to do this.
