Challenge: Use of the Royal Road chord progression

I misread that as 'Use of Royal Blood chord progression' and thought we were being asked to be petulant (see here as to why: https://twitter.com/TheRockRevival_/sta ... 69282?s=20).

The actual challenge is better than my imagined one!

David Bennett! haha, nice!

for everyone else: Nivs loves this guy and watches his theory videos all the time. he looks like he's 12 but he's very very smart and great at explaining complicated concepts. I'm laughing because I'm happy for Nivs that he finally got to use a David Bennett video in a Nur Ein challenge.

David Bennett is tops. Tempted to try a shadow for this one even though my mother in law is still here.

Niv/Mo put this list together and I don't want anyone that doesn't quite understand any music theory to be left out here... I understand what it's like to not know what a IV - V - iii - vi means.

IV V iii vi

C Major: F - G - Em - Am
C♯/D♭ Major: F♯/G♭ - G♯/A♭ - Fm - Bbm
D Major: G - A – F#m - Bm
D♯/E♭ Major: G♯/A♭ - A♯/B♭ - Gm - Cm
E Major: A - B - G♯m - C♯m
F Major: B♭ - C - Am - Dm
F♯/G♭ Major: C♭/B - D♭ - Bbm - Ebm
G Major: C - D - Bm - Em
G♯/A♭ Major: C♯/D♭ - D♯/E♭ - Cm - Fm
A Major: D - E - C♯m – F#m
A♯/B♭ Major: D♯/E♭ - F - Dm - Gm
B Major: E - F♯ - D♯m - Abm

iv v III VI

A minor: Dm - Em - C - F
B♭ minor: E♭m - Fm - Db - G♭
B minor: Em - F♯m - D - G
C minor: Fm - Gm - E♭ - A♭
C♯ minor: F♯m - G♯m - E - B♭
D minor: Gm - Am - F - B
E♭ minor: A♭m - B♭m - Gb - C♭
E minor: Am - Bm - G - C
F minor: B♭m - Cm - Ab - D♭
F♯ minor: Bm - C♯m - A - D
G minor: Cm - Dm - B♭ - E♭
G♯ minor: C♯m - D♯m - B - E

Edit: Hopefully it's correct now. ;)

I guess there's a question about using the 7ths or not using the 7ths and both ways will count. Japan likes it with sevenths, America likes it without. Who am I to judge? Wait... since I am judging, again both versions will count.

Nice. I'm a fan of this guy's videos as well and had already watched this video. I like the idea of everyone using the same chord progression, should be interesting.

(and cool about being able to add extensions!)

Honest question, is the expectation that we use that progression AND that we use it in a four measure pattern where each chord is played for one measure? Or is it just using that sequence of chords as the progression, and the timing can be whatever?

Good question. While the one measure method is preferred (as it would make it easier for the judges), it is not required to be structured that way.

Niv's extra good time challenge-

Reference this in your song, because the numbers don't lie:

To be clear, "use of the Royal Road progression" doesn't mean that's the only chord pattern I may use in my song right?
For example, the Royal Road progression is my chorus, whilst my verse, pre-chorus, solo, and bridge are different or variant chord progressions.

That's good (preferable) to me. Hopefully the others can chime in.

Yeah definitely not expecting the whole song to use it. Although if you can make it work...

I'm certainly not expecting the whole song to follow the progression. But, a challenge is a challenge so if you can, go for it!

And we don’t need to use the whole progression do we? In that particular order? One or two notes scattered about should be fine yeah?

Personally I'm going to be ignoring the chord progression entirely and listening for sounds of royalty and road noises. Cybronica already got some revving engines into round one, the rest of you need to step up.

So - as long as I can use the recording of that time Print Harry farted in the street as I drove past Windsor Castle - I'm good to go?

guys... I think I might be done? worked on it ONE DAY (thinking about it all week). Imma sleep on it and see how it sounds tomorrow.

ALSO! I keep meaning to write reviews for R0 & R1 but since I keep not doing it, I just have to say that everyone who doesn't yet master their stuff should check out Bandlab's free mastering tool! It's really cool and works like a charm. Just because when we're listening to all the tracks at once, the ones that aren't mastered sound super quiet and it's harder to listen compared to the others. Free tip, do with it what you will. xoxo
