Thanks for the love, guys. Personally, I think Abom's zombie-themed-Waits-fest is my favorite. Maybe I'm biased, because we're obviously cut from the same lyrical cloth. The rest of the top 5 are Tex's evilly hilarious entry, mico's funky brevity, Merisan's perfect everything, and a blank space for that one song I probably forgot to mention. Ross gets the award for the most clever (and nearly the ONLY) lyrical tie-in to the challenge. The Song I Couldn't Stream award goes to Calfborg.

Now, let me kick off the trash-talkin'. The following songs made me want to die: Spinlock's, MC Eric B's, Sausage Boy's.

I agree. I would love to see everyone list the "unconventional percussion" used in their songs.
#1. A 5 gallon sparklets bottle with about 8" of water in it. Tilted to let the water slosh, then hit it with the butt of my fist.

#2. A coffee can with about a quarter full of beans (dry). Used as a shaker and I rolled it.

#3. Loose change. Let it drop on the floor next to the mic.

#4. A piece of sheet metal. Bending and tapping with a wrench.

#5. Tapping the bottom of a metal trash can.

#6. The handle of the metal trash can. Lifting it and slamming it rhythmically.

I think that's all I ended up using. I recorded a number of things, but didn't use them all. Most of my unconventional precisions are in the bridge. Also, I really added a lot of FX to some because they weren't feeling like part of the song. The metal bending, I chopped up to match the beat, then added some cool FX. That's the sound that sounds like a cricket on crack.

All recorded from my own car in the driveway.

Like BLT, I recorded more but this is what I ultimately used.

Our (Merisan's) only percussion is a mini-tambourine, two mini-casabas, and two pieces of tupperware standing in for bongos (and doing a remarkable job of it, I think).

I'm digging Puce's song, too, and Plat, you are also blowing my mind. I don't know where you come up your lyrics, but I like them. So much good stuff in this round.

I've had a first listen and there are some great songs here. But I need to go back before I post any reviews. I feel that some folks didn't employ the challenge very thoroughly and kind of ran with the permission to use conventional percussion and drums instead of running with the creativity of using other things. Some of the best songs have some of the least use of non conventional percussion, or use of sounds I kind of felt the moderator (jury) wanted to steer us away from in this challenge.

But I'm the kind of guy who reads the inside of the boxtop when I play game.

Did you know that in Monopoly official rules every property MUST be sold the first time any player lands on it? If that player chooses not to buy it, it goes up for auction.

So Glad Nur Ein! is on again!! I love this game. (thanks niv)

I did know that about Monopoly. Everyone knows Monopoly sucks, Acquire is by far the best American Economics game. ;) What site am I on? SongFight? The lines are blurring with SongFight and Boardgamegeek. Anyway, I own 131 boardgames http://www.boardgamegeek.com/viewcollec ... leryview=1 and love to read the rules to all of them.

My understanding of this challenge was to USE alternative percussion, I did not see "USE alternative percussion EXCLUSIVELY". I hope this misunderstanding doesn't knock us out.

My featured peculiar percussion was only:

1) Stella Artois pint glass, blooped and plinged.
2) piece of sheet metal, whipped about and shaken.

I hope that satisfied the requirement.

My percussion is footsteps on a tile floor, a mixing bowl and a thumb piano. I took "alternative percussion" to be just that--not necessarily "OUTRAGEOUS percussion." Apparently, it doesn't matter because no one likes my song anyway. :cry:

seriously though Mico Saudad, What the Hell? I was really digging the song then it turned into a semi cover and it really bummed me out. Great groove and playing, uninspired for lyrics and melody?

My percussion, if you couldn't tell, is all mouth sounds. Oh, and the handclaps, I guess. It took me six tracks to build, I think.

I suppose it could be argued that what I'm doing amounts to beatboxing, which can be said to have become pretty standard. But I figure it's pretty unconventional for me. It was something I hadn't done before, and this song was a good vehicle for trying something different. (Plus, if spoons count as unconventional, I think my approach is probably far enough off the mark.)


I listened to all of these last night while swerving around moose on the Kancamagus highway. (I saw three last night, and two rabbits.) In most cases I found myself thinking "this song would be better with non-non-conventional percussion (mine included). I liked Puce's song, and Frankie's, and Paco's. There were more, but I need to listen again so's I can remember who.

FBF, I was actually going to say your song was one of my favorites of the lo-fi set of songs. I thought it was great.

We took the "let's try to make unconventional percussion sound like real percussion" route, though Puce obviously wins the medal for that one.

Our bass drum was a spoon hitting a cardboard box. Our snare was punching a plastic bag on a couch cushion and our shaker (intended to be a high hat) was me going "tss". Then loaded into FL, tweaked, and compressed the crap out of 'em.

i have listen to roughly half the songs, and my feelings of unease grow exponentionally. There are some really impressive and catchy songs here.

My final, bitter thoughts on all entries will be aired when they have had time to stew in pits of jealousy and envy.

I really didn't know what to expect when KMS asked me to team up as Ice 9 and enter Nur Ein, but I am really blown away by so many of these songs. I'm looking forward to hearing the next round of entries already. Glad Billy's Little Trip got in, great guitar sound!
