Three general Questions for the Ein-masters.

1. Will there be judge ratings for Round zero even though there is no cut to be made?

2. Will Nur Ein III be on the live journal page?

3. In what thread should I look for the round 1 title tomorrow?

Thanks!

With that said, I say new threads for everything "this year". Also, in the lyrics thread, let's have "Nur Ein - the title" threads. As far as I'm concerned, each title deserves it's own thread.

As long as we’re all in, here’s some first listen, stream of consciousness, “What I like about your song” reviews. My elaborate yet totally subjective point system will make its return next week.

15-16 Puzzle (I was never any good at those puzzles) - Your vocal deliveryand tune work are always great - nice chord changes here. Teh song is structured really well. If only the title was “Kick Starts” this would be one notch up. Clever Idea for the song.

Adam Adamant - As a teen of the 80s this pushes a lot of good buttons. Is this about Nur Ein!! I like the breakdown near the end there with the “trumpet” in my left ear.

ADD - Great sounding geetar, for starters. Have you changed something in your recording set-up?This sounds different than other recent stuff, I think, or am i wrong? “The wandering chords on You don’t mind” are neat. This grooves along real good, very hooky in its own way.

Andrew Reist - Heavy guitars and a good tune are always a good combo (see Teenage Fanclub). Some decent lyrics here, too. I like the cars been missing a part thing.

BLT - Orange County Ska Rock - Yeah!!!!!!! You know how to use your voice and style together so well. I wanted to crank this but I have headphones on. Nice breakdown. I love all the guitars sliding at the end.

Brian Kandel - Neat take on the title - I’m getting that Kick Start is the name of the horse - I guess this was Kentucky derby week, huh? nice recording and performance.

Cock - I like the backing tracks on this one. I also like that you trust a simple structure, sometimes I wish I did.

Embers of Autumn -This would be a great live opening number. Lots of spirit here.

FBF - Why do I even enter? Great structure and all the sounds are placed just right. The arrangement is excellent, and of course your voice and interesting lyrics.

GnR - nice pumping groove - your voices work realy well together and you use that well here, too. Sounds like you had a lot of fun making this. Good bridge.

Hoblit - Ah, the tired-est man on Earth. As you can probably tell from my own lyrics - I’m down with yours. Fun take on the title and excellent sardonic lyrics you cynical son of a gun. “Famous Friends” - yay, a name drop.

JT - man, when you groove you groove. I recall your other rap, and it was cool too. Oh - the Tarantino/Barbarino - lyric of the fight! This should be the unofficial songfight anthem. Nice!!! I’m glad there’s not immunity this round (not like I’m looking forward to being up against you next round.)

jbb - you do the echo stuff so good - I like your chorus and the irony of the music and lyrics pairing is great!! Nice vocal perfomance and cool bass/lead patch.

Ken - nice guitars and chorus/verse chorus. Good tune work. Nice song concept, too. Great package (the song, that is).

KA - damn great geetar, what do you play again? Is that a strat? Why did you thing everyone would use gocart? It’s a great rhyme. The Fred Astaire line is also great. Very catchy and fun.

LOO - Interesting idea for a song. Some interesting layers here. I like where you overlapped vocal lines.

MC Eric B - nice driving rock rhythm. I like the spirit of the song.

# - classic chord changes. Clever list of actors and negations. Funny conclusion to your search - Malkovich. Spud, is this you doing a maddog impression?

PDS - damn yer chops, damn them all to hell!!! Yay for another actal name drop. Silly song - silly story - but hey, It’s Paco!! “What did he say?” great backing vox. Nice groove change.

Sausage boy - and from the first beat it sounds just like sausage boy should sound. Another unexpected take on the title and paired well with the electronic-industrial proto-goth music. And yay for another actual name drop.

Starfinger - I’m enjoying the vocal layers and the percussion stuff in the pre-chorus. Pretty neat amp-up at “not a kick in the face.”

Sven - Well, you stuck with your original vision, that’s for sure. And I guess you learned the answer to your original question.

Tex - Okay, you actually pull this off (pun intended) - nice guitar work on this. Good Bridge - “Betty Rubble” wow too much info!

Worldly Self-Assurance - Are supergroups allowed? The two singer thing is very nice Frisbee and Melvin are a good contrast - excellent banjo and mandolin. Nice texture and tune.

Fun Round Zero - next week, eliminations are on the line!!!

Since it's been asked twice already, yes, it is I, SPUD on vocals this week. Bass and keys, too. And I wrote it. Mad Dog was out of town.

OK OK..I'm a big baby..

I'm just sayin' I could have gotten more sleep between a full work week, two gigs with my band, and squeezing in a nur ein song.

NOTE: I do actually name drop Angelina Jolie (and Sheryl Crow, but she's not exactly and actress) in addition to saying "famous friends".

Yeah, it's a '57 Strat. Family legend is that it was owned by the guy who played on the Lawrence Welk show and they made him get rid of it. Somebody played the heck out of it between '57 and '64, when my dad bought it, because it spent most of the next 30 years under the bed being played only a few times a year. When he passed away in '91, it came to me. When I took it to get set up several years ago, we determined that it had already been refinished by the time my dad got it and the frets were worn down enough that we decided to do a refret and refinish on the neck, just go for "playable" since it wasn't 100% original anyway. It plays really nicely :-) It's recorded through a Pod XT.

Well, crap.

My last paper (EVER. My last paper EVER. How weird is that?) is due at midnight tonight. Top priority, and then I've got squat to do for two months. But I had to miss out on Round Zero. I am listening to some of the songs, though, and really enjoying what I'm hearing.

My comment about your tiredeness was not meant to be a criticism - just a reference. I'm totally on your side on that issue.

And yes, I saw the Sheryl Crow and ANgelina line, but to me, it's not aname drop till you oconnet yourself to the fame, which you do with the line "Famous Frinds"

Yeah, I totally agree with you. A name drop isn't just splicing in a name, it is stating a name in relation to your social network to gain recognition with whom you are speaking. That was the only part I found hard, I could easily name celebrity activists but tying them to the 'college goer' perspective of my first person character was the most difficult. Somehow turning them into the 'famous friends' line was weak but effective none the less. THANKS for listening and commenting, I do appreciate that!

No she's not... and I'm not sure why I'm usually pretty vague... it's a hurdle I can't get over all the time, but I agree it would be much better if the listener understood what I'm talking about and who she is... ;)

My first verse in my song is about you, by the way. I originally had it worded different, describing you as working your fingers to the bone, etc. But I had to chop it down and change some things to make it work. I even had "Hobz" in my original, but the rhyming line was SO cheesy I pulled it, lol.

Not sure if it accounts for it, but I've started using a slew of new VSTs I found via the Free VST thread, and I recorded the guitar with my SM57 instead of my Equitek like I used to do.

Thanks judges for awarding me a tie for fourth place in your standings! Maybe I have a chance at the Nur Ein title this year.

One (i thought) interesting observation ... here are my rankings -

Judge 1 - 9th
Judge 2 - 1st
Judge 3 - 20th
Judge 4 - 1st
Judge 5 - 8th

I'm pretty much all over the board - I kinda wish I knew who Judge 3 was so I could try to appeal to their taste. But I guess that's not the heart of Nur Ein. May the best band win!
