I'm starting to get annoyed at the anti-pop bias around here. Just because I make a song that some people might enjoy on the first listen, holy shit, I'm a fucking witch! Burn him alive! It's not like you can say, "Gee whiz, this song has no technical merits." Nope, the sole problem you find with the song is you like it on the first listen. Holy fucking Christ! I have sinned against one of Song Fight's unspoken rules! I must make terrible music that requires 500 forced listens otherwise I'm not a musician. Go fuck yourself, Caravan Ray. But we're still cool.
I think you misunderstood my comments. Not surprising, because I did not really explain anything.

I liked your song very much. I have no anti-pop bias. Catchy pop songs are my favourite things and yours was very good one. This is why I rated it quite highly. When I wrote "feel good hit of the summer" - that was not meant in a derogatory way. I like feel good hits of the summer

As a random observation however, I did notice that it does however have a very catchy but repetitive chorus - the type which can sometimes get annoying after constant listening (note 'sometimes' - only time will tell if yours does this). A very catchy but repetitive chorus is not always a bad thing. But it can sometimes be

I will go fuck myself now....just waiting for the champagne to chill.

Yay! Well.... maybe I will record mine. I've got lyrics and a tune ... and one of my goals was to submit a songfight during Nur Ein every time they had one. If I do that, it will be Double-Dutch-Done :)

my husband and I had an argument about that. I loved FBF's tune but had to go back and be shown the phone tones (I'm on Rhyme Fire today!)! He thought you were deliberately shirking the challenge and not using flatlines- just beeps that didn't make it to flatlines. I would say ... "no! no! there they are! He's taking the challenge and putting it everywhere! This is the perfect Nur Ein song! The perfect catchy tune." I was actually jealous because I can't write like that. I don't know that he didn't like it. We both did by the end (me the whole time). I like how you, Frankie, and Ross met the challenge.

I think I could have met the challenge more subtly, and it would have come across better. I should have kept my beeps and tones going and mixed them into something orchestral and mixed in better. More like Billy showed but in the mix.

Billy, can I link to your remix?

I mean you no ill will, Caravan Ray, I just feel like I've been singled out a lot in this contest with some "too poppy" comments here and there (not necessarily from you) and finally hit my threshold. I make all sorts of music. I'm just a guy in a basement doing his thing, so I don't really understand why ya'll have to take out your Lady Gaga frustrations on me. I'm not on the radio. I'll never be on the radio. I don't listen to the radio. So that type of criticism, while somewhat flattering, is neither constructive nor fair, in my opinion. Maybe my anger was misdirected - it could be, and I appreciate the elaboration - but I felt I needed to say something.

Maybe you should take it as observation, then, and not as criticism. When you make a tune, people are going to make associations and comparisons. It's only natural and it comes with the territory. It doesn't mean it's bad unless you get all defensive about it like "how can I sound commercial when I don't listen to the radio?" You are what you are and hopefully each song comes out how it's supposed to because it's rare that we can produce songs that impact people the way we truly intend it in our heads. I haven't finished my reviews yet but yours says something like "the lyrics are shallow and unfulfilling but the hook is insanely catchy and infectious." I say that's a score. But if you were hoping we'd compare it to 70's Gentle Giant, I think you missed the mark.

I'm still in the contest. I have nothing to defend. I'm merely bringing attention to what I perceive as pervasive crab mentality. I've gotten quite a few reviews along the lines of "Well, I kind of like this, but I wouldn't admit it in public" or "This is perfectly crafted and has no soul". I'm just sayin', let's take a step back and think about what that means before spouting "catchy = bad" shall we?

Go read the lyrics page. I have 4 paragraphs explaining the imagery and metaphors. If it's still shallow then, well, agree to disagree. I can't please everyone all the time. :)

Better yet, send me the vox and music on two separate tracks and I'll remix it the way I, the B to the L to the T, feels it should be mixed. My way isn't the only way, just the right way.

You know, Billy.. if you keep going on like this.. there is going to need to be some kind of a sidefight about who can write you the best Billy's Little Trip Beer Song Theme Commercial Jingle.
You'll need one to truly cross out Mr. Stones there.

Lyrics need to stand on their own. I read your lyrics a few times but stopped reading the moment I realized the rest was an explanation. Deep inspiration and personal vision about lyrics is interesting once I'm already hooked. I'm typically not interested in a prerequisite lecture when hearing music. Double entendres, really? I guess I missed that. Picasso's Guernica is an intense painting without knowing the context.

And I loved your song despite its lyrics. You scored really high on the music and performance and pretty high on the challenge as well. So sorry, but lyrics like these are describing very mundane emotions, visions and situations. It could be teenage angst, or a stock broker on Wall Street. You didn't paint a picture I care about, since I have nothing else to support the back story. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway has scenes like this in places, but two things are different about it; the broader context is available in the story about Rael's experiences throughout the album, and the music is insanely visual in a way that yours is not. To me.

Because you were telling a story in this way I expected a story. DJ goes off to places I have no idea where, yet the words and presentation grab me and drag me along...willingly. Likewise, Paco can get pretty out there and I don't know what the fuck is going on, but he paints pictures with words that work with his music so well that I love it. That's me.

Thanks for the insight. I don't normally do story lyrics so this was an experiment for me. I was trying to convey a sense of urgency, confusion, and withdrawal in the protagonist; some of it was inspired by American Psycho. Perhaps I missed the mark. Personally, I don't like lyrics that make complete sense on the first read, which is why I added an explanation lest the judges think I'm blathering nonsense.

It'll just end up being a pop song like MG always does. Then after 20 listens, it'll just annoy you.
