Let's take the CAKE song you cited above. There's only one real full stop in that song, and half of it is John McCrea saying "jacket". The rest of the stops actually have guitar noodling filling the space. So... if we're saying all CAKE-style stops are good, then I'm golden, but I just need to know.

So this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... DMf0#t=49s - isn't a stop and start? There's dead air in the song for almost four seconds!

I think that's an effective example of a stop. Other than that, you're right, there aren't numerous stops/starts, and the title of the song is wrong. Also, you need to use the appropriate trademark indicator whenever you cite CAKE-style stops™

This is the song the challenge immediately brought to mind for me:

I think They Might Be Giants' "Don't Let's Start" has effective stops/starts. For what it's worth.

THis has nothing to do Nur Ein - but after posting that Beat song - I trolled UTube for videos of other old ska songs I used to love as a teenager - songs I only knew by cassette, never seeing videos of them

And damn! This guy is so cool. I am going to steal his style for next time I perform at open mic night. Just got to find me a nice roomy white jumpsuit....

Yeah, in terms of fulfilling the challenge, that example was by far the best of the ones I posted.

I thought of another really good one this morning:

Can I just say - I moved out of my house today.

My new house has all the furniture - and I am sitting alone in an empty house with only my guitars and computer. My wife and daughter have gone to Singapore and left me with all the hassle.

Now - I don't for one second expect any show of sympathy from the judges if my recording is not quite up to par - perish the thought - I have far too much integrity to do this.

You're saying that your recorded tracks are going to sound all echoey because there's nothing in the house to absorb the reflections.

Oddly enough, that's not in the studio version. Still, I love that video.

Danm!!!

I had been writing a song called "the Darkest Place In Town" - but in responding to you post I realise I had the title wrong and my idea doesn't actually fit.

I'm surprised your guitars didn't leave you, as well.
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

in my head originally, the stop and start translated to guitars playing in a new jack swing style.

then feedback got involved.

Nur Ein!!!!
Right before the Round One deadline I was....unwell. Mr. DJ Ranger Den hid while I screamed and cried at the computer and mainlined coffee and chocolate. 15 minutes before deadline my mp3 would not Tag. I flung venom and fury at the screen. Miraculously my Estrogen-soaked track was received and thankfully it got through in its weird, odd, version Eight-ed-ness.
Sailors died of Shock Induced Swearing Paralysis that evening.
My song wasn't as good as I wanted and I blame the Travelling Minstrels. I tried to do reviews and I cried while describing three of the songs and had to stop. I blame the Minstrels. If I'm still in a month from now, I really hope we can avoid another 'Heartshaker.' TMI perhaps, but yes, this is how the game is played at my house. Chocolate and Coffee are thrown at the problem.

I'm having a MARVELOUS and very educational time....

i remember a nur ein in the past when my computer crashed in the middle of the week, i had to BUY a new one and install everything AND only two of our members could even contribute to the song...one being me. i didnt record anything until a few hours before the deadline, and i didnt bitch about it. so you'll be fine...if you stop bitching about it. you are a great competitor and a landmark songfighter...i view having the family gone as a huge advantage...so just get in the zone and nail it man.

My roommate is GONE the WHOLE WEEKEND and I have the house ALL to myself!!!!

I have no excuses and I am absolutely ELATED!! WOOHOO!!!!!!!
(am also slightly tipsy so this is perhaps not the right place but as I am about to resume lyrics work:
NUR EIN!!!!!!!!!!
)

ps. Stevie Ray Vaughn's 'Couldn't Stand The Weather' has neat start-stops just at the beginning.
