Good title.

Some interesting uses of start/stops in pop music:

"Don't Let's Start," They Might Be Giants
"U Can't Touch This," MC Hammer
"Improper Dancing," Electric Six
"I Gotta Feeling," Black Eyed Peas
"Short Skirt, Long Jacket," Cake
"River of Dreams," Billy Joel

What others?
"Warren Zevon would be proud." -Reve Mosquito

This may be a dumb question, but we can sing during a stop, right?
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

A stop that isn't really a stop? That is creative.

Well sure. What if you're stopping one thing but not another? It's a cool challenge, but debating how our songs fit the bill is going to be awesome.

I was just planning to make a lot of sudden loud noises in an attempt to "startle" and then use a bunch of different organ stops. I may also play some double stops on the violin. And dictate a paragraph to Siri, English-stye (full stop) I may also include a round.

I don't want to overdo the challenge. We'll probably just have one start at the beginning and one stop at the end.

Let's take the CAKE song you cited above. There's only one real full stop in that song, and half of it is John McCrea saying "jacket". The rest of the stops actually have guitar noodling filling the space. So... if we're saying all CAKE-style stops are good, then I'm golden, but I just need to know.

If you swap those, I think that would qualify as "creative".

You could just stop at 0:01. And not start again.

It would get my vote.

It's a stupid question, but I can't find any definitions on Google. Take for example this link: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 148AAIxyby

So, yeah, if it's not a legitimate musical term that can be found on Wikipedia, I'm going to have to make up my own meaning.
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

I tend to be sort of literal, which combined with creative opens up a huge array of possibilities.

On the other hand, some people might think "I started using words with 'P', then stopped using words with 'p', then started again." Or "I started awesome, then stopped being awesome, then started again." Still others will explain how "start" and "stop" have ancient meanings to the indigenous peoples of the motherland, which we know through the study of their mummified bone marrow." ...these would not be recommended interpretations of the challenge.

Yeah, I encountered this problem as well. The closest term would be, I guess, multiple musical caesurae http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesura.
