I welcome an expert's opinion. I admit I have much to learn.

furrypedro wrote: Frankie Big Face: I enjoyed this. Cool tune and I like the synths/stylophone that you added. The fact that it's about My Little Pony makes me like it even more, I never would have got the reference myself (he says) but the concept coupled with the sincerity of the delivery is hilarious.
Thanks furrypedro. This is just me multitasking during a very busy weekend. I mean, I was going to play My Little Ponies on Sunday anyway, so I figured I'd write a song about it. Glad you enjoyed it!

We just wrapped the listening party. Hopefully I'll have some more complete reviews tomorrow, but for now...

This is one of the strongest rounds I've ever heard. Honestly, almost anything could happen and it wouldn't surprise me. I will say that DJ Ranger Den and Merisan both turned in bar-raising songs that they should be proud of. If I had to bet on a winner for this round, it would be Merisan. I don't even dare speculate about the bottom four.

Balance Lost – I like the insect leg percussion in the beginning. Intro vox are way off though. Cute Aussie accent rap with clever lyrics. Like the punchy bass.

Boffo Yux Dudes – Kinda catchy. Y’all should turn the vox down so we can hear the rest of the song. That’s more of a mixing criticism than a song criticism.

Carlo Bruno Jr. – I’m kind of a sucker for that minor chord progression in the chorus, so thumbs up on that. I like the voice, Colon not so much but he likes the energy and the chorus. Colon: this sounds like it would be good for this type of song but I don’t like this type of song.

Cavedwellers – Balls out Jethro Tull flute? Whoa! I like that 80’s music during the verse, as in I shook my booty but then… Clever musical pun with ‘switcheroo’! After that, to quote, “I know what I like and I don’t want to listen to that. “ The switch-up didn’t work for Colon either.

Chokehold Princess – Ooooh, nice! Accessible melody, with sing-along lyrics, just enough trippiness (was that an accordion?) This is what indie rock should be, sez C. Liked it, good job!

Dani House – Singing feels incongruous with the sounds going on behind it, very hard to decipher the lyrics. On the other hand I like the multiple layers of sound. Too much discordance for C, but I like that about it.

DJ Ranger Den – The vocal harmonies are good. Piano stellar as usual. I appreciate the subtleness of this tune, with the cellos and other textures. Pretty and amorphous. A little too long.

Frankie Big Face – Toe tapper out of the gates. Wait. This about My Little Ponies isn’t it? Sort of 4chan… Nice music though vox are super high in the mix.

Governing Dynamics – Really out of tune guitars, vox way off. Far too much dissonance to enjoy the listen.

Inflatable Vegetables – Pleasant. Plods a bit but inoffensive overall. Colon disapproves, says there’s no stank on that guitar progression at all. He does appreciate stank, to keep a song from sounding like other songs.

Jon Eric – Yes! I love the over the top vox and tickly piano. Channeling Meat Loaf! It has balls. Meatloaf balls, of which I approve. Colon says you’re right, you don’t want an answer to that.

Ken Mahru – This does not really interest me, though it calls to mind Dire Straits.

Manhatton Glutton – Slinky. Great conversationalism. Rockin’ tune! Nice wordplay, pencil-utensil… Colon likes this, good job! Very catchy.

Merisan – The Merisan sound. Her voice is really pretty. Excellent production, the song is well put together and beautifully done. The lyrics don’t seem as lighthearted and soaring as the music, did we read into it wrong?

Paco del Stinko – Great musicianship as always, nice chord progressions, and I like your voice.

Ross Durand – I like these earnest lyrics. They are really good! I like your guitar sound. Your tunes are reliably coherent and well-made.

Sky Pup – YES. That ending was a trainWrecK. Colon loves it.

Tubba Gutz – This sounds uncomfortable. I’ll give it another listen though.

The Tydon Docks – Anthemic. Punk-licious raucous shit. Colon says more drums in the breakdowns, all the guitars are great.

WreckdoM – If the guitar player records it, usually the guitar is the loudest instrument… like this. We rumbled the day we recorded this.

It was five short e-bowed electric guitars layered on each other. I also used the acoustic guitar with an e-bow starting at the end of the first chorus for some barely audible drones.

In order of preference:

Wreckdom - Fuck you. You were suppose to be crap. You had immunity. Cunts.

Frankie Big Face – THis is pretty awesome. Maybe only other Pony aficionados would get this - but I got it and I loved it.

Cavedwellers - I listened to this, slightly drunk, walking a very large poodle around the streets of a medium sized inland city. It seemed to work perfectly. I have nothing more to add. Except that I liked the flute. So did the poodle.

Tubba Gutz – Engaging. Far from good - but i couldn't cut it short. That is a good thing.

Sky Pup: Ha! You are awesome. Please keep playing.

Carlo Bruni: This is awesome. You rock.

Dani House: This is really cool. Good work

DJ Ranger Den – I love your voice. I love your writing. I have a short attention span. Look...a dog with a pufffy tail...

Ross Durand – Is your guitar a bit harsh? But also the lyrics?!?!?!? WTF?!?!?

Like what’s the speed of light?
What’s the great red spot?

The speed of light is is 299,792,458 metres per second, and the great red spot is a storm on the surface of Jupiter.

These are not mysteries. Don't treat your listeners like idiots.

Governing Dynamics - You win the Pixies copy competition this week. Not that that is a bad thing.

Paco del Stinko - Good. But your lyrics are a bit emasculated. Harden up dude. Put a spoonful of cement into your weetbix.

Balance Lost: You don't sound very convincing with the reggae beat. You seem more Geoff Boycott than Gary Sobers.

Ken - Are you playing the same game as me? We can get through 4 rounds playing type. What are you going to do in round 5?

Merisan
- Nice. Not Interesting

BYD: Joke songs should actually contain a joke.

Manhattan Glutton - Annoying TMBG accents with no jokes. - No.

Inflatable Vegetables - you failed the 10 second interest test.

Jon Eric - I don't want to hear about fucking cakes.

Chokehold Princes
- THis sort of crap may play wherever you come from - but if you did this in Brisbane, we would sit on your chest and shit down your throat. Grow up and pull your head in. Making noise for the sake of it is neither clever nor will it pull the chicks.

"we would sit on your chest and shit down your throat."

Of all the threats that I've heard over the years, the shit-down-your-throat variety has always been the one that I'd be curious to see move past hot air and get a follow-through. Sadly, Aussies in particular are consistently disappointing in this regard.

Yes, well, listen to the whole lyric, and I think you'll find that's the point I was trying to make, let's stick to questions "like" those ones, where we get answers, and let's not bother with the existential questions like those in the verses, because if we do, the protagonist may just have to examine some questions in his own life.

"Answers we can know"
"Keep us on the facts"

Thanks for the review and for ranking me above the elimination threshold - It gives me hope. I have my fingers crossed

Hey, I'm glad! I'd be lying if I said I knew a lot about My Little Ponies. My friends over at Wikipedia helped a lot. I saw the old songfight title and it seemed to pair nicely with the category Things I Don't Want an Answer To. I considered revealing that it is about My Little Ponies in the lyric thread but that seems like such a ROSS thing to do, I just couldn't.

See, CR knows how to bring a Nur Ein review to get people out of their comfort zone.

And it's a known fact in the past, the more CR dislikes your song, the better it ranks. Unfortunately the flip-side is also true. CR liking your song is "the pash of death". :)

...sorry, Frankie. I personally love the MLP angle! :P

Top 5 reasons why John Mayer can never be cool:

5. "I've got a Benetton heart and a fucking David Duke cock"
4. On the Fall Out Boy version of "Beat It", John Mayer played the Eddie Van Halen part
3. He may be on Frank Ocean's album, he's also on Demi Lovato's.
2. John Mayer's stand up comedy career
