Paco Del Stinko wrote:Chokehold Princess - It's amazing that you can toss these songs together so quickly. The theme is simple but maybe doesn't come off as hailing the snake. Fun and easy going but the good vibe may be spoiled by feeling rushed. As a fan I hope you get more time to polish. As a competitor...phew!
I had another bridge idea that was supposed to tie in the "hail" aspect, but it sounded calculated and drive me nuts.

Indeed, I have little time to deliver the goods until after Memorial Day, so if I get axed that's it.

My pointless opinions. I'm not actively trying to be a bastard so if I said something hurtful or confusing I can attempt to explain myself better if you ask (though I may end up digging an even bigger hole).

Tydon Docks:
I was tempted to take the "garden of eden" angle, but my collaborator's a christian so I thought I'd pass it over - but enough about me. I do like this a lot, the whispered rap is an interesting way to deliver the vocal, I dunno why, I'd just expect a more bombastic delivery, but I like it. Lyrics are neat, they remind me of Scroobius Pip (if you've not heard him yet you should listen to "Waiting for the beat to kick in"). Good job, you cunt.

Governing Dynamics: Once again, really nice sounding guitars, but you seriously need to find a way of writing a song that's less than 3 minutes long. Hearing your caterwauling "Hail to the snake!" over the last minute of the song really doesn't add anything. It's not like you're playing chin-strokingly interesting chords either. If you make it through this round I wanna hear more guitar counterpoint, time-sig/tempo changes, polyrhythms or syncopated rhythms, or some riffs even, you can definitely do better than choosing some chords and just strumming them or picking them.

Wreckdom:
I wish you had a better mic cos this track sounds so clean and well produced with all the samples and synths and when the vocal comes in it sounds muddy. The bounce to this track is cool, I like the mainly tom-based rhythm. Fuzzy synths and flutes are cool. There's an awful lot going on, this is almost like a Pop Will Eat Itself song. Love the brass, I don't often say that.

Boffo: There's some interesting sounds here. Could be a Wreckdom track.

Carlo Bruno:
Cool song. I love the riffage at the intro and the playing is pretty tight all round. Yeah, this fuckin shreds like Hot Snakes (who I am going to see in Barcelona next week, yay). Backing vocals are urgent and awesome.

Cavedwellers: I like this, it's very nicely recorded. This almost feels like your actively trying to sound like Merisan - maybe imitate their immunity-grabbing antics? Good dynamics and selection of sounds.

DJ Ranger Den: I do love a good bit of dance but this feels like a slightly tentative and amateurish step outside your comfort zone. I don't get what you're trying to acheive by all the drop-outs - they have the dual effects of making you sound like a dj who doesn't know what they're doing and/or can't beat-match properly and losing any momentum the song has. The atmospheric bit at the end has a bit of an Aphex Twin ambient works feel which is great but there's no focus, the song feels like it's trying to be a lot of things without really achieving anything. Sorry. Ooh, more constructive comments - layer up the beats with multiple kick/snare sounds so you can get a nice bit of sub bass in the kick but also something with a bit of click to give it a nice full punch, also layering the synths - if done tastefully with various complimentary sounds you can keep the minimal feel but give it a bit more richness/texture and space.

Ross Durex: Standard Ross fare. The chorus is my fave part, the drum march and brass are killer.

Inflatable vegetables: I appreciate your effort to go outside the box a little bit with your mix of congas and rock guitar, it's an interesting blend. My main gripe with the song is that it doesn't have much in the way of dynamics, all the sections sound the same, there isn't much sonic development and there isn't enough of a hook to draw me in.

MG: Good effort to try something slightly out of your comfort zone. You do the lounge singer angle very well and the chords, arrangement and vocal inflections are all in the right place. Well done.

Mrsnaei: Nice switch of style. It goes without saying that everything sounds lovely. Kudos for making it sound so effortless, like it's the kind of thing you do all the time.

Paco: FTW? Not quite as rockin as Carlo's track until the solo comes in. I like the "phat" bass, I think the double time sections sound a wee bit awkward, particularly the push, i'm nitpicking though. I kinda would've like to hear a Heather/Paco dual vocal but hey ho.

Chokehold Princess: Yeah, this is funny. Feels a bit throwaway and novelty but I do like all the little elements like the sighs, the "damn" and the tongue clicks all underpinned by Homer Simpson doo-dee-dooing. Nicely constructed and I like the way you've incorporated the mom aspect into the song. I'm interested to see how this places on the scoreboard.

Sadly not, it is my friend Rebecca (not the same Becci who has sung on WSA songs, obviously). You may have met her when you came to UK and we went drinking and dancing before the burden of responsibility overcame her life. First time on record! I had to use the spirit of Joan Armatrading to coax this performance out of her. I will say hi to my mum from you, and you can call her Thea :)

Reviews...The songs styles were so all over the place this week, and I loved it! Disclaimer: These reviews do not represent Merisan as a whole.

Balance Lost:
Well produced, the intro is lovely. I am drawn into the bass line during the interludes. The overall melody is catchy enough. Listened a few times. I like it.

Boffo Yux Dudes:
I like the samples, but the singing is strained. I think that less is more for your style. The synth arrangement is actually pretty cool, and has a sort of futuristic cinematic feel to it, but the vox interrupts it. Maybe less contrast between them would be interesting?

Carlo Bruno Jr.:
LOVE. The guitar solo made me really happy and I thrashed around for a bit with a curled lip making devil horns. More please, thanks.

Cavedwellers: Sweet shakers. I like the gentle pace of this song. There is rich complexity and craft without getting confusing. The bridge is a nice change of pace, but the outro is a hair too long for my taste. I really enjoyed this song.

Chokehold Princess: Acapella fun times! Brief and awesome.

DJ Ranger Deni: An artistic sound scape? Sample's galore and I am enjoying piecing together the dialogue, though it's a bit too far out on the experimental ledge for me. I keep waiting for you to strike a balance with something more melodic to tie it all together, but it is not going to happen. Would be fun to play at a fashion show or gallery opening.

Frankie Big Face: Hypnotic. Blonde Redhead leaps to mind. I really love the metallic noises that are happening when you say " All Hail The Snake". Haunting and beautiful, and I would love to do a collab in this vein.

Governing Dynamics: Does not grab me at first, but the guitars pull me in. There is a sweetness in the duet that I can appreciate. The song goes a bit long.

Inflatable Vegetables: You win for best name. Hmmmm gritty guitars and bongos? This is not my favorite song of yours, but I can see there is some good intention behind it. :)

Manhattan Glutton: You just couldn't take the week off. Over achiever! ;)

Merisan: That's Us! I had a lot of fun writing this week. I absolutely loved the HBO series "Carnival", (as I have a bit of a thing for all things Carnie), and I feel like I was able to weave in some of that imagery into the lyrics. I think Sam did an amazing job painting that imagery with his guitar and accordion in the bridge as well. It would be exciting to make a video for this! It makes me want to get a snake lady tattoo.

Paco Del Stinko: Oh jeeze, It's Heather. No fair! Fun song. This is the song that they are playing really loud when you are riding a questionably safe carnival ride ... and the guy operating it says, "If you want to go faster...SCREAM". Every body does, and then he plays some DefLeppard. Love it.

Ross Durand: You deliver such "anthemic" folks songs! The horns sound great! Love the collab. ;)

The Tydon Docks: Wordy rap with a groovy beat. I like the samples. Not sure I want to listen more than once, but a fun listen for sure!

Wreckdom: Whoa, another groovy sample filled song. Again, not sure I need to listen more than once, but I like it when you do this style. The Snake narrative is my favorite part.

Per usual, I have no idea who is will win this round, but we are at the halfway mark, so I applaud everyone who has made it this far as it is quite a feat of endurance to deliver these songs. I raise my glass to you all! :)
Eeep-opp-orp-opp-opp...that means I love you!

Thank you especially for these comments. I have made a point of concentrating on actually playing instruments this Nur Ein, rather than relying on loops and tricks and I have often done in the past. Nice to see some results. My electric guitar and bass have often lay neglected over the years.

After Round 0 - when I lost my entire song a few hours out from deadline and had to re-record the whole thing again with just bass and guitar - I decided the Tydon Docks would be a 3 piece - just bass, strat and simple drum beat. This week was departure from that slightly, with some samples, drum loops and multiple guitars - but I still have not yet touched my two most favoured tools-of-trade - my acousic guitar or keyboard once during this competition.

Hope to be back with another stripped-back 3-piece song next week.

Not sure if it is "whispered" - but the first few takes were certainly more "more bombastic delivery". I was originally all SnoopDogg/Chuck D/LLCoolJ with the "yo"s and the "ho"s and the "mofo"s - but then I realised that that was completely ridiculous, so I rewote and rerecorded the whole thing to be just essentially my natural speaking voice - albeing ryhming, like you were sitting quietly in a pub with a snake telling a story.

If you have ever heard any Australian hiphop - there is nothing so awful as to hear it done with horrible fake American accents (but sadly that is very common). When it comes to this sort of thing, my inspiration will always be the legendary MC Denyer.

Previous weeks were all played "live"

This week, the guitars were 90% live (I did have to repair a few fluffed bits by punching in good bits)
And the bass about 70% live. I played the whole thing through, in sections. But 2 bits, the intro and the "choruses" - ie. the bit under the Steve samples - ended up being made up of one played riff being looped (it was too hard to get those slidey bits exactly the same every time).

One of these days I may become a real musician.

Balance Lost - I like y'all's voices. They're not perfect but they're real. Guitars a little out. Cute catchy song.

Boffo Yuks Dudes - Yes - Escape New York samples. I like the vox. Neat breakdown with unexpected harmonies.

Carlo Bruno Jr. - This rocks. I like the guitar tones, the punchy rhythm, the punk rockness of it. Good one!

Cavedwellers - Ahh, you use that percussion sound I think of as "the spider" (what's it really called?). Like. Pretty backing vox (and pleasant front voice). Tasteful. I think this is a very well-done song.

Chokehold Princess - This is some ballsy a capella. I applaud! I will be listening to this more often.

DJ Ranger Denni - Loops and multi-layered textures - approve. Eerie sounds good. Whoa I just looked at the player to see DJ Ranger Denni. I am liking this direction you've taken. Atmospheric and kind to the ears. It might be the laptop speakers but the talking and piano are low in the mix.

Frankie Big Face - Love the ethereal quality of the music and the great mom vox. And that chord progression - it's so furtive, like it makes your heart ache but it's so lovely. Well done!

Governing Dynamics - Not too bad. Doesn't stand out that much though.

Inflatable Vegetables - This is a'ight. Vox lacking conviction though - belt it out man.

Manhatten Glutton - Sultry Mike Patton-y crooning was cool but that made me want some sudden outburst of chaotic music and it didn't happen. Decent song otherwise.

Merisan - Ooooh. Fantastic lady voice! I like the old-timey tonality. Very clean sounding production.

Paco del Stinko - Balls-out and punchy guitars, sassy femme vox. I love the alliteration and internal rhyming in the chorus. Sexy breakdown. I picture the lady in the bar in Mad Max who sings a song called "Licorice Ride". Super good!

Ross Durand - Are those live horns? I hope so! Anthemic. I like the all-American mom who comes in. It's a little cheesy for me, sorry I'm not super patriotic, but this would probably go over really well at a rally.

Tydon Docks - Kudos for mentioning Elizabeth Bathory. I like the quick-talking. Fun and frantic. Twangy guitar (right before the upstroke guitar) has a great tone.

WreckdoM - Yupyupyup yupyupyup.

The judges have spoken, and we're out - while a smidge disappointed, I'm quite pleased we made it to Round 3 (our personal best!)

I'm pretty happy with this song and the way it came together, but I can see it being a little too clip heavy and not quite what judges were looking for in a Mother collaboration. However, we hit the 'Snake' theme loud and proud.

Congrats to Paco on a well deserved win this round, and we'll be kicking around next Nur Ein - and you haven't gotten rid of me yet. I still have 4 more rounds of listening parties to play.

And as an aside - if people want to shadow the songs, I'll play them at the LP. That's a tradition for the SpinTunes LP's , and I'd like to continue it here if people are willing to keep up with the pack.

thanks everyone for comments. this has been a weird Nur Ein for me but I did what I liked. These results were precisely what I expected; but the reviews far more generous.

I will say a general comment that if the track came across as awkward, lurching, choppy, or thrown against itself...a lot of it is due to subject matter. It's the dreamscape of a gaming teenage boy, lurching from topic to topic - jumping from subject to subject. Some of the ugliest parts ironically took the most time and I wished I'd just left them and spent more time on mixing and mastering. I like the idea of story-sound-scape-things...but it's genre work in progress for me. This was very educational. Thanks :)

NUR EIN!!!! everyone :)

ps. congratulations. to everyone, and excellent work.

It only shows consistency. You are still only as good as your next song.

Just ask our friends at Wigan who won the FA Cup but still got dumped out of the First Division.

Which is actually the complete opposite of the point I am trying to make I suppose.

Maybe Merisan will be more like the South Sydney Rabbitohs of 1989 who won the Minor Premierhip, only to lose their next 2 games to Balmain and Canberra to miss the Grand Final completely, which was won by a last minute field goal to Canberra which resulted in extra time and a try in the corner to Steve Jackson, and the Green Machine won the Competition even though they only finished 4th in the home and away rounds. So maybe the Canberra Raiders were Chokehold Princesses. Or something.

Sounds like you need another Bundy and Coke. :-)
