Heads up, I aim to update the site closer to the deadline than usual this time, so we can get the live fight title up far enough in advance of Song Fight! Live for folks to have a shot at writing their songs beforehand (not that anyone will).

Hi. Quick question...

How does next week's Songfight work, is it still an online vote open to those not attending Songfight Live, or is it just for those in attendance with voting taking place at the event?

Sorry we can't attend this year

It will be posted on the site and is open to all as usual and all participants must submit their entry-- the live fight stuff will not automatically be included.

Game on!

As JB said, for folks not attending this will be just like a regular fight. There is also usually an "optional challenge" of "live recording" or something like that.

For new folks who don't know what goes on at Song Fight! Live, there will be a "live fight" where attendees perform the songs they wrote for the title, and the audience votes for a winner (with applause, judged by the MC). In a good year some generous person records the live fight performances and sends the recordings to the performers if they want them to submit for the online fight. Some folks submit studio versions of their live fight songs instead though.

I'm a participant in this fight. I don't know what the band name will be, because, you see, it's those guys. They're my jamming buddies, for those who may not have twigged. (I'm not on all their entries.)

For some reason, my jamming buddies don't share my interest in production. I get it about not rehearsing. I mean, who rehearses a jam? But the subject of SongFight came up, and we managed to write and knock off a short, moderately coherent if somewhat artless song in the time we have available for jamming -- basically an afternoon -- and run through a few takes and overdubs.

Now, if you ask me, cleaning up a recording, even one rife with musical mistakes, is not a big deal if you know what to do. This time the usual producer obliged me by copying the WAV files to Reaper so I could clean them up, and he took notes. But as far as I can tell, he then worked with his usual muddy mix on the multichannel recording device and posted that.

He was good enough to send along an MP3 I made of my cleanup. It's not by any means a final mix -- I didn't have time for proper mixing, and anyway it would have been futile given the monitors available -- but I did take out the muddiness and introduce some track separation using routine, non-monitor-intensive procedures. Even he says it's "super clean," if "a little thin."

In the fullness of time I will post that MP3 as an attachment, and you can compare it to what's in the fight. If on account of this you are inspired to suggest once again to my jamming buddies that they could benefit from cleaning up their act, especially since they now know how, don't let me stand in your way.
