Vowel Sounds: I like the melody quite a bit. The two vocals work really well together. The arrangement is great. I thought it'd be a bit long at over 4:00 but it seems to hold it's own rather well. Something about that snare being a bit heavy, but it may be that I'm just a bit hungover.

Pigfarmer Jr: (me) - All "vocals" and a lot of the other sounds are NASA audio samples available on their website, including sound files from Cassini. It's suppose to tell a story, but I'm not sure how well it worked. This appears to be the next to final mix so it's missing an element or two and it drags just a touch too much in a place or two.

2 geetars and a fish: I like the vincent price like vocal. It's got a cool combination of guitar and spacey sound clips. Not sure it gels completely for me, but I enjoyed listening.

Wendy Wiseman Fisher: I've always shied away from putting my vocals up front as much as you do. It takes some confidence to do so and do it as well as you do it. Not sure that the melody being that repetitive for so long is a great choice. A few spots of using vocal tricks "cry-ies" just seem a tad off for me. And I think the strings are a bit heavy handed in their section. The length of the song works against you a little bit as well. But really, over all, this is a cool interpretation of the title.

Metaluna: RAWK! Chorused guitar first line and some heavy beats. Man, what a great way to tackle the title. I like the arrangement here as well. The change in dynamics work very well.

J$.: Loving that music, the glitchy, slightly 8-bit feel is cool. The melody works, the vocal is not spot on and just a hair buried in the mix in a place or two. Using the POV of the title didn't even occur to me.

Huygens: Cool band name for this title. Your song builds nicely but it didn't really lead me anywhere. I think I need a resolution somehow, even though I get why you did what you did. If it were me, I might not change it, either. But I still feel it needs something.

Lichen Throat: Again, your music is enticing. And I love the (pitch shifted?) vocal to start. Your main vocal suffers from pitch and timing problems. You've got cool ideas, though.

WreckdoM: Kind of a cool backdrop. Not sure killing people is a great angle or not. Vocals are a bit out of element compared to the backing. Although I do like the telephone/distorted bit towards the end.

R. Mosquito: Another Cassini POV. Fun melody and vocal performance. I appreciate the brevity which allows me to finish my reviews so soon.

Voting for umm.. Vowlsounds, Metaluna, and a maybe for Huygens and.. Okay, I gotta go back and listen again.

Wendy Wiseman Fisher: Wow, that's a lot of musical repetition. I thought that was a Nur Ein challenge? Anyway. The melody and the chords clash a little in a few places, but I guess it kind of works for this song. I was king of hoping for more build-up... I do notice you've changed up the sections a little but I think there's more that can be done. In the mix/arrangement I'm mostly missing low end (bass!) and high end. Nice to listen to once but I'm not saving this.

R. Mosquito: I have to admit I expected something very different when seeing your name here. :) Fun little thing you made, though I think it'd be better placed in Songlet Fight. I guess the looseness is kind of deliberate but it makes the background hard to read. I think this could have been cleaned up a little more in the mix and not suffered from it.

2 guitars and a bass live: to me this is just a mess so I can't say much about it, but I can say that this is a little low on high end.

Vowl Sounds: Best first impression so far, nice clean mix with nothing clearly missing. I like the stuff you've put in the background. Decently synchronized vocalists. The main turn-off in this song is the lacklustre female vocals. Doing a whole song in breathy voice is rarely a great choice, it gets boring fast! (Plus it's hard to mix properly with a non-breathy second voice, though you did a pretty good job there.) Solid writing, might have benefited from some kind of extra section to shake things up, maybe a coda.

Metaluna: I'm not a fan of this genre, but this is clearly pretty competently done. If I had to name one thing that bothered me, it's the very artificial-sounding reverb on the drums in the second section (~1:00). Nice development and such. Good job.

Pigfarmer Jr: I appreciate the idea this is based on. Personally I would have gone for a fuller arrangement/accompaniment, I think. It's a matter of taste to some extent. To me this is fine for a one-off listen but not enough to go back to.

WreckdoM: More proof that automatic pitch correction isn't a magic fix. Major points for doing interesting things, minus points for making it hard to listen to.

Lichen Throat: Your alien vocals are way buried in the mix. Heavy processing of this kind tends to ruin the frequency bands that make voices easy to recognize, so you have to compensate for that somehow. I like your arrangement. Learn to hit (and hold) your pitch.

Johnny Cashpoint: your 808 snare is a bit low in the mix. Generally the various levels are a bit weird. The square/triangle synth is perhaps slightly too up front for most of the song, for instance. Generally the mix could use some more punch but I think your song idea is coming through nicely.

Huygens: The first intro seems a little disconnected...? The next bit is really overcompressed, painful to listen to. Oh, that's actually all of it. Sounds like it got cut off at the end, too (length in multiple download attempts: 1:23). Sorry, all I can say is: incomplete and overprocessed.

Well, I liked only one of the submissions. I'm not going to start telling everyone how great their submission is if I don't think it's great, and if I wrote about how great it is that people tried to do things, it wouldn't be a review. I'm trying to provide honest feedback here and I'm not objective enough for it to always be constructive. Specifically, if I can't get into a song, there is literally nothing I could suggest in terms of songwriting, simply because I suck at writing things I don't like. I can suggest things about the mix in a song I don't like, so that's what I do.
I get that you didn't like my review of your song, whichever one that may have been. Okay, fine. If you want a more considered analysis, ask for it, and don't make me guess which submission is yours.

I didn't want to post this before the deadline, but Adam Sakellarides did a decent song on the Juno probe last summer that would have fit pretty well.

W.A.I.L.

Metaluna – impressive metalling. The guitar tone is a bit clean / synthetic-sounding (not saying it is, just sounds that way). Like the spacey slow-down bit. Even more so when it proves not just to be a slow-down bridge but evolving into the song itself. The lack of words and a certain genre bias work against you from my perspective but there is nothing here to dislike, per se.

Wreckdom - Wobbly musically and vocally! I like the bonkers-ness of this (and I think if you’d dropped the first minute it wouldn’t have made much difference). Not seeing what the lyric means in relation to the title. And it feels a bit throwaway overall, but not unlistenable or anything 

J$ - is me. I cut the 8-line chorus out because it was feeling to crowded. Had I more time I would cut out the vocal more or less completely and replaced with some instumentalising. I didn’t.

WWF – Voice sounding good as always. This is kind of ‘the story of Cassini’ set to music, right? I like the carnival music feel. At 1.30 I’m itching for a change-up, especially as the song is 4 and a half minutes long … like the “harps” – very ‘heavens-invoking’. I think the lyric is a little heavy-handed at points. Also though I like the song, overall, it’s not strong enough to support its length. IMO, obviously. Maybe a little light percussion joining in for the last two minutes or so might have helped the dynamic?

Vowl Sounds – hey, Vom! I really like the way your voices work together (though some of the lining up is on occasion a little loose. Not a bad thing though, just I notice it a couple of times). I would prefer a little more key action just to offset the (not bad just) slightly repetitive acoustic chord patterns. Pretty song, a good listen, but perhaps too long by a minute or so, for what it is. I do very much like ‘what’s a little fire amongst friends’ as a line, however!

2 guitars and a bass live – I’m not a fan of songs when they’re ‘acted out’ like this. I do like the mood piece you’re creating with the music very much though. Clearly there’s more than 2 guitars and a bass here, trades description act and all that, just sayin’  Nothing much to complain about here but I don’t think I’d be rushing to listen to it again. Which is a comment in itself, right?

Huygens – Well, that starts big and awesome (and a little hot in the mix?) Oh wow, everything is so high in the mix! That’s a bit rough on the ears! Nice bit of music, feels like it’s about space but lack of words is a little disappointing. Doesn’t outstay its welcome though. A slightly less aggressive mix and you could imagine this on a soundtrack somewhere.

Lichen Throat – those synths are a tad too loud, I think. Ah the inventiveness in the arrangement is very pleasing. Wobbly vocal aside, that section is suitably melodic but I would have preferred if you’d cut most of that out and just had the instrumental / sampled / voice-affected sections run together. As it is it makes the song way too long for what it is. A little efficiency would make a good song shine.

Pigfarmer Jr – Hey I used some of those NASA samples too. Snap! The spacey choir preset is a little on the nose but it works so hey. I like the way a story kind of comes together out of the samples. It’s probably not evolving quite fast enough, dynamic wise to carry the simplicity of the arrangement, though I do like the dirty bass synth that creeps in around 2.00mins. maybe the music could come up a little in relation to the samples / backwards drum part. It feels a long way in the distance (which might be intentional given the space theme). Yeah, not bad at all and I admire the inventive approach to the title.

R Mosquito – cutesy. Hey your Cassini is much more stupid than mine! I think I prefer your take. The Bowie-esque guitar descend around 40 secs is better than the previous part and as I’ve said before I am personally not a fan of ‘acted out’ performances on songs. Still it tells a fun story, entertains and gets out before the shepherd’s crook reaches out from stage left, so good job.

Metaluna - Awesome. I love the the way the feel changes a minute in. Beautiful spacious production and epic feels.

Pigfarmer Jr - I like the vocal samples, and the intro sounds super ethereal and spacious. Love the way the rock march fades in.

Wreckdom - I like the liquid warble of the lead synth and the bouncy backbeat. The instruments are really boppin’ here. Vocals are jaunty.

Huygens - Oooooooh. Epic space glam. Too short! I was into it.

2 Guitars and a Bass live - the vocal performance is awesomely compelling. Love the husky basso whispers. Great mood-setting.That theremin-type thing is a great touch.

R. Mosquito - Muppet doo-wop is my new favorite thing because of you.

Vowl Sounds - *love* love the counter-melody in the background vocs, love the lead vocal, dig the lyrics. Vote. <3 Really good music. Will add it to playlists.

Lichen Throat - Diggin’ your distinctive instrumentals.

Johnny Cashpoint - Cool “ahs” - and nice use of motif in the lead synth.

WWF- that’s meeeeeeee

2 guitars and a bass: Ooh freaky. The spacey noises in the background are cool. I’m up for a bit of improvisation, but the main guitar is a bit loose and scratchy, it makes it a bit distracting. I think I missed the point of the narration. Spoken word can work in a track, but I listened to this twice through and still didn’t get the meaning. I think you were going for a creepy vibe and in that respect this is a success. I think tightening up the guitar playing and getting a story that’s easier to interpret, or maybe just with some of the fat trimmed, would improve the impact of this song.

Huygens: Sorry, I tried to listen multiple times but the link ain’t working. If it gets fixed let me know and I will return and review.

J$: When the spacey aaahs come in it opens up quite nicely and the guitar complements that section well. It’s interesting how the vocals are clear enough but I still can’t make out many of the words. That’s not a negative necessarily, I’d rather have indecipherable lyrics than crap lyrics (I know I could read them in the archive – I always remember the liner notes in Different Class saying “Don’t read the lyrics while listening to the music”. This has influenced me since adolescence). I like the synth and drum sounds you’ve used. I like the layering of the synths too, but I’d like the second synth to have a slight variation in the melody rather than just doubling up. I like the chorus though, and I will almost definitely steal “there’s no AI in team” in my own conversations, thanks for that!

Lichen Throat: Interesting and moderately pleasurable sounds, I like the chords that come in after the neopolitan intro, there’s some cool intervals in there. I feel there is a way to make your lead voice fit in the mix better, the alien voices are better mixed, probably helped by the delay effects – so yeah, a little delay, lower the level a tiny touch, lower the EQ on the lower frequencies. It captures a feeling of otherworldliness and loneliness which is cool.

Metaluna: I’ve been flamed numerous times here for submitting instrumentals. Personally I like them, and who can complain when they are as proficiently executed as this? I am not a metaller even remotely and this has all the hallmarks of the genre, guitar harmonies, double-kick pedal, but it’s all done well so kudos for that. My personal favourite bit is the gurgly synth sounds in the middle breakdown section. I like how the track breaks from the genre and space opens up in the middle. It feels like an underground cave rather than outer space, but I am stricter on quality rather than relevance so it doesn’t bother me too much. For some reason somebody keeps suggesting I write a song in the style of an anime theme tune – I think I could learn a thing or two from you about that! Very well done.

Pigfarmer Jr: I keep hoping someone will do a track in the style of Public Service Broadcasting’s The Race For Space album, the intro here is the closest so far. It breaks from that when the swirling synths settle into the Nintendo end-of-game-boss music chords. Really cool synth work. Not much else to get my teeth into, but the swirliness is great. It’s like the soundtrack to going through a wormhole.

R Mosquito: This is one of the most coherent and least spacey I’ve heard so far. I like the chipmunk chorus, the lyrics are cool and bouncy. It could even have another verse probably. I enjoy it, but I have grown to expect a sound which reflects the feel of deep space (without absolute silence, there’s the rub) and this has no atmospheric noises whatsoever. So, I like what you’ve done, and I think you could expand it.

Vowl Sounds: I feel like I don’t want to suck up cos we’re acquaintances, but this is fantastic. Now, the verse doesn’t blow me away, but the melody in the chorus actually made my arm hairs stand up, the bit where you sing “bedside table”. That’s rare. The wibbly/twinkly synths are super cool, I just wish there was more of them. Maybe a bit of a change up with the arrangement in the second verse could help. The lyrical angle is nice, more down-to-earth (harhar) than others in the fight. Playing a mixing is perfect, just lets the song shine through. Great work. I hope to hear more!

WWF: Full of foreboding and dread which gives way to a sense of wonder so unexpectedly. That transition is wonderful. Good vocal performance, and these lyrics dramatise the probe’s journey more than any others this week. It makes me imagine it as a plucky little satellite struggling against the harsh elements and other more fantastical perils – maybe the latter is an allegory for going crazy in the loneliness of the void. Maybe I’m reading too much into it.

Wreckdom: It sounds like the vocals have a different tempo to the backing track. The wibbly synth and dripping noises are cool, and that groove in the second section is actually really good, but I’ve gotta admit I just don’t get the vocals. It sounds like you’ve written a random song about killing and then said the word Cassini to make it sound relevant – I must be missing something. Not really digging the vocal delivery either, it feels off-key and arrhythmic, neither of which are good qualities unless it’s spoken word, which this isn’t. Sorry, but I do like the instrumental.

2 guitars and a bass live—This is pretty unfocused and never seems to really get going. Each individual component sounds good, particularly the bass, but I don’t think it comes together into a cohesive, purposeful song.

Huygens—There are a lot of little things to pick at here: the mix is too loud, some of the instruments sound weird, and it ends very abruptly. However, you’ve done a very, very good job of evoking the feeling of an object hurtling through space at a fantastically high speed, just using instrumentals, which I find impressive. Vote.

Johnny Cashpoint—I like the anti-human sentiment. This is very competently done, but I feel like there’s something lacking that I can’t quite put my finger on. The “beyond the realm of men” line is a nice ending.

Lichen Throat—Thanks for the mixing tips, everyone—I need them. I really had a lot of trouble recording the vocal, especially trying to get the timing right. This is only the second song I’ve ever written that wasn’t in 4/4, which probably made it harder to sing correctly. I’m not thrilled with the final result: the middle parts of the verses seem boring, and I’m not sure the deliberate weirdness pays off. But it was a fun experiment, and I do kind of like the off-kilterness of the last line of each verse. And I’m happy that at least one person commented about the feeling of loneliness, which is the main thing I was trying to evoke.

Metaluna—I’m not sure what this has to do with the title (or how seriously it was intended to be taken), but it’s well made. It’s outside my usual listening sphere, but I’ve enjoyed it each time through. Vote.

Pigfarmer Jr.—This reminds me (and probably everybody else who’s ever heard the song) of Rush’s “Countdown,” which is a song I’ve always liked. You did a good job mixing everything together. I’m not sure how much I’d want to listen to this repeatedly, but I’ll give you lots of points for creativity. Vote.

R. Mosquito—I don’t think I get what you’re trying to do musically, but I do like the lyrics and the narrative.

Vowl Sounds—While everyone else was busy making space rock or weird songs from the spacecraft’s point of view, you made a creative, clever, beautiful song. I’m reminded of everything I like about Belle and Sebastian, only with a more pleasurable vocalist. “Walk of shame past God on judgement day” is a great line. If I have to find something to nitpick, the male backing vocal seems like it’s out of place in the mix. But I really can’t say enough good things about this song, and I look forward to your next entries. Vote.

Wendy Wiseman Fisher—Very good vocal performance. I think this is successful at evoking a feeling of tension, anticipation, and eventual doom. It’s a little hard to pay attentional the way through, so maybe a shorter duration would have worked better.

WreckdoM—The bubbly instrumental sounds are cool. The mx is done well, too. On the other hand, I don’t think I understood what you were trying to achieve here, or what it has to do with this fight’s title.

First time reviewer finally checking in.

R. Mosquito - nice acoustic bounce to this one, and I like the way the layered vocals fill out the mix. Really fun, and doesn’t outstay its welcome.

Johnny Cashpoint - really like the chiptune synths - they give this an interesting atmosphere, and they combine surprisingly well with the lead guitar. Really like the lyrics, too - that last line is a killer.

Wendy Wiseman Fisher - unusual shifting melody and I like the orchestral arrangement (especially the sweeping harps) and the way it draws back a bit for the chorus hook. There’s an insistent feel to the vocal but without any breaks in the delivery it feels a bit exhausting to me, maybe some room in there for an instrumental section or two?

Pigfarmer Jr - never sure how to review abstract bits of music like this one! It definitely conjures up a suitably spacy vibe. I’m glad I read through other reviews as I had been listening to an incomplete version of this (first download cut off after a minute for some reason?) and there’s some interesting stuff going on later on.

2 Guitars and a Bass Live - I like the mysterious vibe of this one and the layered spoken vocals, but it feels like there’s a bit too much going on at times; I could go for a bit more space, no pun intended.

Huygens - great energy, the ultra-squashed mix doesn’t do it any favours but I enjoyed it anyway. Echoing other reviews about the sudden ending, should it have gone on longer?

WreckdoM - I really like how this one starts, and there are a lot of good ideas in it, but it never quite clicked with me. Although I listened to it more times than any of the others, trying to figure it out, which must mean something?

Metaluna - I love those harmonised leads in the opening section, the shift to the spacy section caught me by surprise at first but I really like this; those subtle bubbling synths sound great.

Lichen Throat - enjoyably odd arrangement, I really like the clean vocal but I’m less keen on the distorted ones. This has something though, I’m a sucker for kind of melancholy sci-fi stuff.

Vowl Sounds - this is me! Although I think nearly all the good stuff here came from Owl, I was a bit low on inspiration. Still definitely a keeper and we’ll be working on it a bit more I think.

Votes for… Metaluna, Lichen Throat, Johnny Cashpoint, R. Mosquito.

Full Disclosure: I, too, have a genre bias...towards heavy guitars and drums. Since none of the tracks (barring mine and Huygens') included this, my reviews will be colored by these things. With that out of the way...

Johnny Cashpoint - I like that synth, just feel like it needs a bit of 'verb on it to make it fit in (sonically). Feels like the track is missing a few percussive elements: perhaps a sub drop around 1:13 and maybe a different kick pattern in a few spots. Too much release, not enough tension. This has grown on me on further listening. Your voice is definitely enhanced by that slap-back effect.

Huygens - Evocative of interstellar violence and digital screams. I assume that the abrupt ending is meant to signify the collision as our intrepid spacecraft collides into the rings. I also assume that the hyper-compression is done for effect. Well done. VOTE.

R. Mosquito - Crackheaded folk music. The baby "ba-ba-ba"s made me laugh. Feels a bit unfinished and the vocal bits at the end are a bit muddy. Not my cuppa, but I might have just not gotten what you were going for here.

WreckdoM - This started instrumentally interesting...and then the vocals come in. I skipped through this track upon my first listen but have forced myself to listen a few times. That tambourine is a bit too high in the mix. I do like the bubbly auto-filter synth.

2 guitars and a bass live - Lots of interesting elements here. A bit of a psychotic pastiche. Perhaps that's what this title was calling for. The spoken word vocal on the left channel is absolutely riveting. Laughed at the "please don't probe me there" bit. Not much more I can say on this one.

Lichen Throat - Lots of elements here, not sure that they all quite gel. With practice -and a bit more reverb/delay- your voice sounds like it would really work well over some acoustic strumming. The lyrics feel a bit too on the nose and the monster/robot vocals are bit off-putting (to me). Maybe some further percssion would help tie the room together. Just spitballing here.

Wendy Wiseman Fisher - Lot of interesting elements here but it suffers from the opposite problem from Mr. Cashpoint's track: too much tension, not enough release. Even the ostensible chorus is building up. Needs some percussion to punctuate things. I do like the harps and the other symphonic elements (though they seem a little "cheap" sounding a the start). Your vocal track sounds like there's a resonant peak in the low mids that needs to be EQ'd out - just do a little sweep of the frequencies around 500 Hz and notch that bugger. I've liked this one a bit more on repeat listens.

Pigfarmer, Jr. - Nice soundscaping. The backwards snare loop gets to be a bit much after a minute or so. Very well done. Would certainly work as a segue in between tracks for your 3-Disc space rock opera.

Vowl Sounds - Oh my, this is good. I like the synth and the bell kit/glockenspiel/whatever. Gives it an appropriately dreamy feel. Hits all the right notes. I do wish that the male background vocal was a bit tighter -the loose feel is a bit of a distraction (for me). The sad tale of the lyrics prevents this one from being a keeper for me. A bit too...something...I don't know. At any rate, this deserves to win the fight and I generally assume that it will. Nice work. VOTE.

Metaluna - A number of things came together for me in putting this track together. First, I'd been listening to Boston's Third Stage album (including the track "The Launch") and just recently discovered Brendon Small's Galaktikon (he's the creator of Metalocalypse and this is his space rock opera side project). So, space was on the brain before I even saw the SF title. Additionally, Toontrack is have a month-long discount on all of the MIDI drum loops -and I purchased the "Library of the Extreme" pack which includes those lovely double-kick patterns. The track itself is structured to mimic the various parts of the voyage: the launch, reaching escape velocity, the various slingshot maneuvers through the void, arriving at Saturn and beginning the mission properly, and the final descent into the rings. In a way, I wanted it to feel like a mini-version of Vivaldi's Summer: a suite in three movements (okay, all of the Four Seasons are in three movements...Summer is just my favorite). In listening to my track side-by-side with all the other entries it becomes apparent that I kept the overall volume a little bit low - I was trying to keep the dynamics and punch. So, if it's not rockin' hard enough...turn it up! It may be a bit gauche to vote for your own entry, but whatever. I dig this one muchly. VOTE.

I'd love to (time and inspiration permitting)! I've got another instrumental in for "Black Days" at present. We'll see what they come up with next...
