Relative to the crazy natural disasters going on all over the world, it's a small thing, but, this is the smallest fight since "Rule of Thump" 12 years ago. :(

Ha ha ha. Yeah, good point. If I knew how I would relax the "you must vote for at least two songs" rule, but, I'm not sure where that code is and even if I found it I'm not confident I could modify it safely. :/

Oh man, I feel like such an idiot. I had a song like 80% of the way done too, but I didn't finish because the I thought the concept was stupidly political and in poor taste.

Well, listening to the songs for the review didn’t take long…

Dimetrodon—I composed the first draft of this song and wrote the lyrics, mainly with the intent of squeezing in as many references to Texas-themed songs as I could, from Americana standards to obscure They Might Be Giants songlets. All the performances are by my friend David, who also made some modifications to the song as we recorded it. This was my first time collaborating with anyone else on a song, and I was surprised at how different it seemed than doing everything myself. Having a cooperative songwriting and recording process is probably old hat to everyone else here, but it was quite a novelty—as well as a big learning experience—for me.

Pigfarmer Jr.—This is my favorite of your recent songs. I like the wistful, yet forceful, chorus. The guitar tone is nice, and the chord progression is well chosen. The repetitive drumming at the end gets a little jarring, but it only got to me after several repeated listens, so it’s not too much of a problem. The lyrics are just clever enough not to seem too straightforward, while still making your point clearly and effectively. Good work.

Pigfarmer Jr. - agreed with lichenthroat, this is a really good one. Really propulsive and melodic, and I really like the guitar and vocal tone / FX you've used.

Dimetrodon - even as a Texas know-nothing, some of your lyrical references made me smile - you've done a good job of making it a compelling lyric and not just a list of things, though. Some really interesting stuff in the guitar part too. The cooperative songwriting process is always a novelty to me, it never seems to work out quite how I expect, but usually for the better!

You both get my vote!

As was alluded to earlier in the thread. You have to vote for a minimum of two. So... whether you like it or not... if you vote... we both get it.

At least I'll finally get a win on the board.

Knowing my luck, I'll tie for last place.

Dimetrodon: I like the guitar playing right from the start. This seems mixed just a bit low before the vox comes in. I read the lyric the other day and I like it. I'm pretty happy that Texas Flood made it in, which is kind of an obvious one, I guess. I even thought of that song before the fight was announced. The melody works well for me. The performances are good. The vox is probably just a bit higher in the mix than I would like, especially in the second verse and chorus. If it were me doing a G&G song, I'd probably use the Haas effect on the guitars to widen them out. Or do something to spread out the guitar a bit. But, really, I've nitpicked this to death. As I like the guitars and the melody and the vocal performance is pretty solid (I like it more on second and third listens) and the lyric is a cool idea and pretty well implemented.

Pigfarmer Jr: (me) I've been doing a ton of these types of songs (arranged drums, bass, acoustic, electric, vox) and I'm still not happy with the way the acoustic guitars sit in the mix. (I think new strings would help immensely.) The vox could be better, especially in the first the verse where it's pretty weak. The chorus, though, is pretty solid. The doubled vox a fifth (or whatever the hell it is) apart works really well. And the drums are a bit repetitive on that chorus, but they work pretty well, I think. Oh, and the lyric came pretty quick and I like it, although it's a bit more heavy handed than I would have written if I were to tackle this subject without this specific title. I'm fairly happy with the song although doing the 50 Songs in 90 Days songwriting challenge has given me a different perspective on these challenges.

Here are some smilies that I've never used before. :ugeek: :geek:

Here is a poem I am about to write for songfight:

Oh, dear songfight
You quirky little bastard
You make me wanna drink
Until I'm completely plastered

If I decide to vote
I don't know who to choose
But I guess I already know
With two entries, I guess we all lose

In a shocking turn of events, it's a tie! :P
