Quick comments with beer. Prost!

Berkeley Social Scene - Ok. This is good, but thin compared to some of the solo memeber's work this work. Classic 80's soundtrack, verses nail it. The Surf Punk dude vocals and section is nice and gnarly. This should beat me this week, but not win the fight.

Glennny - This is some of your best work, to me. Floyd covering Joe's Garage. The rhythms and melodies float and drift in all the right ways. The key solo is very well done, but would best be re-done for the single version. Smooth and colorful, soaring slo-mo. End section is nuts. Hint at this instead of earlier synth solo.

The John Benjamin Band - Best elements of classic DEVO types combined with great neo-classical vocal stylings and gentle and tasteful melodies. The processed vocals are great, still coming off as real, somehow. Full, fat production. It's dance floor ready, yet family friendly.

Lichen Throat - I really like this arrangment. Wall of Voodoo. The main riff would be great as a killer guitar riff. Hello, Glennny. I wonder if a less is more approach would work for you. I enjoy this more than last week's. Am always reminded of @Eclectic SpOOns from my early days here.

Lunkhead - All the ideas are right to the point and mesh perfectly. This is hopping and humping away. The main riffs are more than glad to support the twisty tasty riffs that climb onboard and over the top. Dancing funky robots so infectiously engaging. Hook adfter hook, ripping leads exactly where they belong, this is an instant funkarific classic. Perfect.

Paco del Stinko - I blasted all parts but vocals in a day. I like some of the tones. Should finish last or next to. Not by design, thank you.

Third Cat - This finishes right after Lunkhead, as great as JB's song is. Not all of the ideas here work, but the ones that do soar. Mostly the surprisingly psychedelic sections work best, and there are several. The chorus section is excellent, but perhaps for a song entirely in that style. Maybe the same thing, but just a wee bit warped as a hook. You're on the way, brother.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

BSS - Dig the synths on the intro, cool retro future type vibe. Some pretty catchy melodic ideas and I like the vocals on this much more than I have on most other BSS songs I've heard. Great guitar solo. I like this one.

Lunkhead - Love the funky groove here. Draws me right into the track. Lots of catchy elements here instrumentally & vocally. Love the instrumental breakdown cool mix of synth & guitar. Definite vote.

JBB - I like the synths here a lot but I do kinda dig the mixture of guitars & synths more that the BSS & Lunkhead tracks have. I really like most of the vocals but I'm not as crazy about the heavily processed section. Some cool lyrics. I like this one, but it might be more of a grower for me.

Glennny - Some great stuff going on here instrumentally. And some cool vocal melodies but I'm not sure if the vocal fx work quite right in the mix. Love the instrumental sections. Awesome synth leads. The last minute is my favorite minute of the fight. Really dig that outro. Another one I think I'll have to vote for. (gonna do my final votes after listening again later on in the week.)

Paco - Cool high energy track but my favorite bit is when it slows down (and the solo of course, your solos are always pretty bad ass.) This is really good.

Lichen Throat - Instrumentally probably the coolest ones of yours I've heard yet, some neat little melodies in there during the instrumental sections.

###

Great fight; probably my favorite set of songs as far as average quality of the submissions out of the 10 Song Fights I've taken part in so far. Robots.

Berkeley Social Scene - the vocal melody kinda sinks this one for me, it just feels like it follows a very obvious pattern along with the chords. Maybe that's a deliberate attempt to sound robot-esque, but it's just feels uninspired to me. The bridge is cool though, the solo is good as ever, and I like the lyrics.

Glennny - pleasantly meandering. I like a lot of the ideas here and the general vibe but the sum of the parts doesn't quite grab me. The lyrics are extremely clever but at the expense of any real sort of emotional connection. Which maybe is thematically appropriate!

The John Benjamin Band - excellent synthing, the bass is deliciously chunky. My only real criticism is that I like this rather than loving it, which is odd as this is so far up my street that I feel like I should love it. I think I prefer the verse to the chorus, the effected vocals don't totally work for me even if, again, they fit the theme of the song!

Lichen Throat - the musical arrangement really works, those muted guitars sound good and leave more space in the arrangement for the vocals. Unfortunately I don't think this is your best vocal work, the timing feels a little loose, and I didn't find the lyrics particularly interesting for once.

Lunkhead - incredibly catchy, and that funky distorted instrument (electric piano?) is a very cool sound. The lyrics are goofy and fun.

Paco del Stinko - I don't think this is quite up to the standard of your last couple of songs but I still liked it quite a bit, and the lyrics are intriguing. The rhythm of the lyrics in the chorus is kinda unusually and really effective.

Third Cat - the little bits of chiptuney synth lead in this are absolutely wonderful. Chorus is really catchy, and the lyrics are sweet and heartfelt. My favourite from this fight, I think, and I love the way you've arranged the blend of guitars and electronics here.

High quality all around here, and yet they all had something that stopped me going all in on loving them (apart from Third Cat). Maybe I'm just in a bad mood.

I also listened to the podcast before posting these and had to laugh at the comments on Paco's song as I also ended up googling "Marina Robot" when figuring that one out.

In some places the melody purposely follows the root of the chords to allow for easy three part harmony.

Fair enough! The chorus harmonies are pretty effective, I guess it's the verse where it didn't quite work for me.

Another cool podcast; I do think it was an unusually strong set of songs and so it's cool you guys are voting for all of 'em. I appreciated your comments on my song even when they were not so positive, maybe even particularly so, it's always interesting to hear how other people are hearing what you're doing. Sometimes also frustrating of course. I really liked the comment about the tension building up during the instrumental section and release into the chorus - as that was my intention there. I feel like I *almost* pulled off what I was going for with this track. Maybe next time.

Yeah, I agree that the chorus needs more something. In post-submission tweaking it gets better when i make the parts more precisely aligned. And it uses VocalSynth version 1, and is much improved by Vocal Synth 2. And I think it might need to be a few bpm faster.

Thanks for the the comments everybody!

Berkeley Social Scene—I think I’d like a higher density of percussion notes; it might make the song seem faster without actually increasing the tempo. In general, though, this is a solid, enjoyable song. It’s also among the better BSS vocal performances, in my opinion.

glennny—This reminds me of Pink Floyd. And like Pink Floyd, it sounds better after repeated listening. The keyboard solo is a little shrill in the mix, but it’s performed and composed well. Not a catchy song, but I find that I genuinely like it, in part because the complex elements continue to intrigue.

The John Benjamin Band—Probably my favorite of this fight. Your melody is great, as is the interplay between the vocal and the instrumental music. I also enjoyed the buildup throughout each verse.

Lichen Throat (me)—The vocals are a mess, obviously. I did many more takes than usual, but this was just a difficult song for me to sing. I was trying to write a song in the style of Say Hi (which I had recently seen at a living room concert—this was a great experience, by the way; I’d never been to one of those before), so the awkwardness of squeezing in the long vocal lines was intentional, but Eric Elbogren can pull it off a lot better than I can. I kind of like this song overall, but the performance is clearly a weak point. Maybe someday I’ll figure out how to combine a passable vocal performance with a big dose of compositional weirdness.

Lunkhead—Much funkier than I ordinarily prefer, but I can’t fault any aspect of the performance. This is well conceived, well executed, and I like it. Lyrics are perfectly appropriate for the overall tone and atmosphere of the song.

Paco del Stinko—The guitar tones are great. The melody is not catching me, however. The musicianship is in fine form, and I like the lyrics, now that the investigatory abilities of Song Fight have laid bare the narrative background.

Third Cat—Very appealing. I enjoyed all the little instrumental touches. This is fun, and it sounds good.

Podcast comments—Thanks for taking the time to comment on everyone’s songs. As usual, I appreciate the detailed insight into all of the songs; I feel like I learn a lot from your commentary and analysis.
