The Library Dogs: I couldn’t tell if you were talking about Miss Clavel from the Madeline books, or something else. She is a nun, so there couldn’t be a Mr. Clavel. But there is a Clavell Tower in Dorset, London. I googled it. That seemed fitting for the feel of the song. Then I looked at the actual lyrics and it wasn’t about either of those things, but something more allegorical and compelling. Great interpretation of the title and a real twist in the third verse. I like how you make eyes into a verb. Heavy, mythical. Or maybe about three kids in the sandbox. Either way, great song.
Thanks! It really was about 3 kids and the little one destroys everything. They say to write what you know.

"Rod The Bunman"

I realize that in the 12 years or so since I discovered the Songfight website, "Miss Lovely Eyes" was only my 14th submission and that was over 5 different names. How funny considering that in real life I only ever write songs as my actual name John Kloberdanz. But "Rod The Bunman" is certainly the most enjoyable...

About 42 years ago my friend Tom and I started writing songs together and we named our duo after the fellow who delivered the baked goods from the factory to the Burger King where we had met on the night shift. We never played out or had an actual musical release under the RTB name, but when it's Tom and John, it is Rod The Bunman. "Miss Lovely Eyes" was our first collaboration in about 27 years, and his first contribution to Songfight How awesome is that?

So at any rate guitars, banjo and other misc. instruments on Miss Lovely Eyes were Tom and vocals and a background acoustic guitar were me. Yes, Tom plays very well and is melodic and musical! I recorded and mixed down with the most thoughtfulness I've ever spent on a Songfight. From a song construct I had Jack Logan in mind, although vocals sound like Neil Young for sure, sometimes I don't even think about it. I thought I was a little pitchy, but my allergies were acting up and it was the best you were getting!

How did I get on there in the first place! I knew I shouldn’t have used Tor to shop for nonstick pans!
Weird, I just bought some nonstick pans too and it linked me here. :P

This is the first fight I've listened to in years. Damn, the old guys are vastly tighter. Funny how stick-to-itiveness forces a feller to improve, whether he wants to or not. A lot of new names making some great tunes as well. Of course at the mighty SongFight, new names could be old members with botox.

Anywho, I enjoyed this fight. Paco still bringing the macabre with that Ace Frehley shred. Love it!

Yeah, all good, Lunk. All good with you too, I hope. I've just been reminiscing of late. Went back and listened to some of the old BLT and BatP music. It's funny how when you're in the thick of it, you don't realize how much music you've made until you step back. I forgot all the things I hated about certain songs that I never listened to again after we entered them and now just hear creative music. Even hearing a certain guitar riff reminds me of where my mind was back then. Life's a funny thing that way. ;)

A lot of songs. A lot of good ones.

Balls to Monte - This is great. I have nothing to say about it. This is the kind of music I like.

Brown Word and the Big Whine - Did I count four different vocal parts? This sounds like glam rock and I love it. My only issue is that it feels unfinished. You have a new theme around 1:58 and then it ends.

Buddy Hinton - I dig the jangle guitar. I wish there was a little bit more energy in the lead vocal. The backing vocals are great.

Cannonade Streete - It is obvious who influenced this so I won't even say the name. That said - no harmonica? Even the Nebraska album added harmonica. I would have liked some kind of percussion as well to fill it out. I usually don't read the lyrics, but I'm glad you posted them because it made me like it more.

Cazaro Taro - others have said this ends too soon, but I think it is obvious that "Miss Lovely Eyes" cut the phone line. Perfect.

David G. Harrington - this is well recorded, but I'm not hearing the hook.

Duncan - this i my favorite of yours so far. Relatable lyrics and a memorable chorus.

heine - Sounds like something from 1983. Nice chorus. Something during the "pre-chorus" seems heavier than it needs to be if that makes sense.

hoodmo - Second week in a row I'm voting for you. No notes (like my notes would be helpful)

James Owens - I like everything on this except for the vocal. The vocal is not bad, it just didn't have the intensity of the music.

Jeff DeSantis - Miss Eleanor Ribgy Eyes. I with the "solo" was longer and had some cellos, flutes, pizzicato violins, theremin, gongs, xylophone, etc. Very creative.

Jonathan Mann - Vote

The Library Dogs - beautiful vocals and chords. I can see Crosby, Stills, and Nash doing this one. However, something seems missing - perhaps Neil Young.

Lichen Throat - As I said last time, I'm never bored with a Lichen Throat song. I'm not trying to force a different style on you, but with your production techniques, I would be interested in seeing what would happen if you locked yourself away and listened to nothing but pop tunes with catchy choruses and then see what you came up with.

Messy Oily Elves - Nice job. I wish this was a little "meaner" sounding.

Moody Vermin - There is so much going on here. I love most of it. Maybe a little too busy. Am I hearing vibraphone at the end?

Night Sky - Night Sky and the Four Seasons. Why not go full Rusty Millio (shame on anyone who doesn't get that reference) and sing falsetto? And as others have pointed out - this is the song you choose to NOT play sax on?

N' Stuff - the guitar playing and drums on this rock hard. And I really like the additional vocals on the final chorus.

Paco del Stinko - guitar/bass/drums - so good. This song makes me anxious in a good way.

Pannacotta Army - Really nice. I'd love to hear more of the electric guitar. Maybe even some subtle slide guitar.

Pigfarmer, Jr. - I love that lead guitar riff. I'm not feeling the distorted kick. You always seem to mesh electric and acoustic guitar parts well.

Robyn Mackenzie - Your vocals are always great. I don't comment on mixing because I don't know anything about it, but this sounds really, really bassy (bassie?, bass -e?) There is a lot of low end. I don't think I could tell that there was an organ on here until the end. Song is great.

Rod the Bunman - A lot of songs this week are making no secret of their influences. The lead playing is really interesting. I like how it goes right into the verse without a long intro. I can hear a little Son Volt in this.

Sir Chorizo. Another nice one with a country feel. I wish the music on this one wasn't so aggressive. Lighter or acoustic guitar and brushes/lighter drums would make it work better for me.

Sly Eli - the vocals at 1:28 are great. But I actually like part 2 better and would love to hear a different version that revolves more around this.

Sumner Sloane - here is how bad I am at mixing - there is a snare drum in this which cannot be heard

Sweeney Toad - I voted for your winner last week. I didn't vote for this one. I still liked it. That's why they call it Song Fight!

Tiny Robots - the best vocals in the fight. I liked the guitar tone on the solo as well.

If I missed anyone - I loved it.

My review methodology is:

1. I listen to each song, all the way through, at least twice.
2. I do read the lyrics.
3. I do not read comments of other reviewers prior to posting.
4. I separate the songs into 3 categories:
a. Songs that probably will get a vote
b. Songs that may get a vote
c. Songs that probably won’t get a vote
5. I vote for 20% of the songs rounded to the nearest integer. For this round, I will be voting for 6 songs. I do not vote for myself.

I appreciate all the comments. Thank you. I produced the song to be a joke song and part of the joke was the sudden ending. For those who need closure, here is the rest of the story:

The family dog ate the cookies prepared by the little sister. The dog vomited violently next to the protagonist while he was phoning the FBI causing him to hang up abruptly and take the dog to the vet. There, the vet found that the dog had had a violent reaction to the chocolate in the cookies. The dog has fully recovered. The parents finally understood that their daughter may have some issues, and is now seeing a child therapist named Hannibal. They seem to get on very well.

Quick Moody Vermin liner notes:

when I came up with this herky jerky riff, it automatically told me it was a Moody Vermin riff, super fun to play, not that fun to try to program drums to as it turns out, but also I'm just not that great at it. The little lick at the end of the main riffs is something I got inspired to do from I think a Josh Smith Instagram video, which was in his blues style, but I clearly did not go in that direction with it. Evermind, Roy and I spent a fair amount of time discussing angles to the title that weren't beauty pageant related, or odes to individual people, and settled on the topic of the ubiquity of surveillance, which is a pretty Moody thing to sing about. Evermind found this, as someone aptly put it, "Bowie/Yorke" niche that I really like, Roy put in his unique set of textures, and we were off to the races. Recently I have been apparently doing a lot of "minor key verses, major key choruses", and there's no real reason for that of which I am aware, but I basically heard a sort of Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie kind of feel in the chorus, so that's where the groove went. The Roy backwards guitars and kalimba and everything really took it all to a different level--he's just good at dressing up naked riffs in designer clothes, as it were.

Thanks for the reviews everyone. I'd reply to some of your comments but I don't have the energy after reviewing so many effing songs :).

Paco del Stinko - sounds like a cross between the The Gross Tones and Captain Beefheart. It's a bit rough and dirty but I like it. Cool song.

The Pannacotta Army - smoooooth. It gets a little repetitive by the halfway mark but it's an enjoyable listen. The little descending piano parts in the background are a nice touch, they sound like falling snowflakes.

Pigfarmer Jr - ooh I wasn't expecting the acoustic guitar with those bit crushed beats. That's the only real surprise in the song though, apart from the weird vocal effect. Nice song but it needs something more to stand out.

Robyn Mackenzie - woah that's a lot of bass, my speakers are rumbling the windows. I like that you went for a waltz. I think the lyrics are the strongest part of this song. The melody is pleasant but not as memorable as some of your other songs that I've heard.

Rod The Bunman - A Horse With No Name was the first thing that sprung to my mind when I heard this. The singing is a bit rough but I like the chorus melody. The song doesn't really seemed finished, it just repeats and then stops.

Sir Chorizo - ahhh I was expecting to really like this till the singing came in. It's OK but it doesn't fit well with the slickness of the backing band. The melody needs work, it's a bit uninspired.

Sumner Sloane - this is nice enough but by the halfway point I feel like I've heard everything this is going to offer. There needs to be more variation in the instrumentation to keep my interest.

Sweeney Toad - I like this. It's the most musical of the songs of yours I've heard. It's hard to make out what you're saying and what does come through is a bit odd but the songs catchy and it held my interest till the end.

Tiny Robots - this all round good. Great instrumentation well played, nice vocal and and plenty of variation to keep things interesting. This gets my vote.

Balls To Monte - I like the jangley guitar, it sounds a bit like the Smiths. This is pretty good but the miss lovely eyes refrain gets a bit repetitive. It feels like it needs a bit more pace and energy to make it stand out.

Brown Word and the Big Whine - cool intro, especially the descending stuttering drum. I'm not sure about the rest of the song. The mix is a bit muddy. I really like the outro too actually. It's just the middle section that lost my interest.

Buddy Hinton - this pretty good. It's a catchy song but the performance is very rough. Everything sounds slightly out of tune and off the beat. I'd like to hear a version that was more polished.

Cannonade Streete - this sounds like a wasted Elvis impersonator singing to himself in a dumpster.

CazaroTaro - everything in this sounds very stiff. Even your singing and the instruments that sound like you miked them up for recording. I think loosening up and not quantizing everything so much would improve this. Give it a bit more an organic feel.

David G. Harrington - your vocal performance sounds a little disconnected from the music. The timing and pitch are slightly off and coupled with the mix it makes it sounds like you're out in the street singing along to this rather than in the room with the band. I liked the breakdown section.

Duncan Martin - I like the little descending vocal run you do at the end of the long drawn out notes. It doesn't work so well when you go up though, watch your tuning on the higher notes. Your songs always have little phrases that jump out and stick in my head, "salt water taffy" being one. It sounds like a friendly fish. This is a pretty good song and I enjoyed listening to it.

Heine - Your songs are always pretty catchy but this one really sticks in my head. Very pop but I'm enjoying it. The chorus melody is a good one, nice work.

hoodmo - this is nice enough but by halfway through I feel I've heard everything this has to offer. You need to change things up more to keep me engaged for a four minute song.

James Owens - another song that's nice enough but doesn't really go anywhere. I'll stay to listen till the end but there needs to be a hook to get me to comeback for another round.

Jeff DeSantis - that's three songs in a row now that I've listened to with the same pleasant feel but no hooks. This is nice enough but there's nothing to make it stand out of the crowd and make me remember it.

Jonathon Mann - there's a Jeff Tweedy quality to your voice that I like. You sound like Wilco but with a degenerating robot drummer that's gradually loosing it's shit as the song progresses. I like it, it's catchy and interesting and gets my vote.

The Library Dogs - plinky plonky guitars seem to have been a theme this week. This is the best representative of the genre though. Nice harmonies and what sounds like a xylophone. Nice work, have a vote.

Lichen Throat - nice take on the title. In places you seem to run afoul of trying to fit in more words than the melody and rhythm will allow. It's like you wrote the lyrics first and didn't cut them down enough to fit the music.

Messy Oily Elves - this is good. There's a slightly odd effect on the vocal every now and then, like you've cranked the auto-tune up a bit too much. I'm not a fan of the slow breakdown but the rest of the song is worth a vote.

Moody Vermin - you loose it a bit on the high notes but most of this is pretty good. I particularly like the change up in the "document our history" section.

Night Sky - I prefer your voice when you sing in a lower register. When you sing higher like this you're more nasally which I'm not a fan off. Not a bad song and I stayed till the end but the vocal put me off a bit.

The N'Stuff - woah that's a lot of high frequency cymbal action. If you're going to go for a reverb heavy mix like this you need to cool it on the cymbals. I like the song and all the echoey guitar work is really nice. Good effort.

Thanks SlyEli for reviewing. I liked the variety in going high, but I think you're right. I guess my choices are: more takes, more vocal practice, lower key, ask my friend Nicole to sing those, or autotune.

Thanks, yeah I struggle to tame allllll the high frequencies. Ken had mentioned the aggressive cymbalage during our process, but I agree, I didn’t take them down far enough in the end.

Come back and start entering a bunch of tunes again. Or don't. Anyway, nice seeing you around.

Thanks for the reviews, and glad my silly 50s intentions came across and my simple guitar riffs worked and were enjoyed by some. I added the harmonies on the intro/chorus/outro riff on a whim at the very end of the process and was very happy with how they turned out.

There's some falsetto in the backing vocals in the chorus, but doing the whole thing in falsetto would have not been a kindness (as it is, I put Sly Eli off by even going up to my first bridge). As for not including sax, I had just poured a bunch of energy into SpinTunes saxophone excesses (which didn't go over well, incidentally), AND it was far too late at night to subject my neighbors to wailing rock and roll saxophone by the time the song was together enough to record it, so it was less of a decision than a failure of time management.
Night Sky is Sally on lyrics, Steve on drums, and Matt on the other stuff

I do all of those. I try different keys and pick the one that sounds best. Record multiple takes of each phrase and comp the best bits from each. Finally I'll fix the bad bits that are left with Melodyne. I find all that necessary for SongFight because there's never enough time to learn a song first, I'm usually recording it as I write it.

I'm afraid this might be as loose as I get for the moment. I'll see what I can do in the future. My vocal recording process depends on tight timing to reduce post recording production as I always prepare for double tracking. The same tight timing is required if I sing harmonies. In high school, I had a band director that would fly into a rage if the timing wasn't crisp. It was very impressive to see, and, as such, I sort of became sensitive to timing. Maybe someday I'll knock back a few whiskies and join Cannondade Streete in his dumpster and see what happens.
