Booty Chesterfield Trio: Wow this is a very... loud track. It is noisy. I can not understand what anybody is singing! The drummer is pretty good though! It is nice how it is not always blasting and loud and things but I am not sure that I like this one very much.

Caravan Ray: The beginning is dark and spooky and I love anything which uses dijeridoo. Or however that is spelled! It feels a bit rushed in that you are starting up right into these big droning chorus line vocals and the mix feels a little bit thin. I love the simple driving beat though! It keeps my interestedness up for a while but after a while I start to get a bit bored about two minutes in. I like some of the droning synths you use.

Carpetburn: Many of the chord progressions make me flinch because they are kind of hurting, and the drums kind of feel like you programmed a drum machine to do a bunch of random hitting perfectly on the beat. The lyrics are a bit of a ramble too. This mix definitely needs to be fattened!

Chin Music: I like the dark mood of this song. You are very good at guitar playing too! I wish that all gender-and-guitar songs could be this good! It would be nice if there weren't so much noise in the mix because it is rather distracting but the song itself is good enough that I can try to ignore it when I listen. And then the other instruments and other voices come in and make it even better! This is a very pretty song. I really want to hear a better recording of it.

Daddybop: I can make aleatoric sounds by banging on a keyboard too! At least it settles down quickly and takes on a nice pretty sound. Very light and airy, like something that would be in a movie soundtrack or an infomercial for the new business opportunities in selling space-colonizing robots.

The Darkest Daves: I really hope it is not just five and a half minutes of this guitar riff and the croaky "RHYMES WITH LUCIA" voice! So far it has been 90 seconds and the song is still not going anywhere past that. But you might be enjoying a web-comic called Narbonic (which is not to be confused with Narbotic!) which is about a mad scientist named Helen Narbon and I bring this up because one of the recurring antagonisms in the comic is from the Dave Conspiracy which is the conspiracy of all people in the world named Dave. You can see it at narbonic.com! It is ending soon though. Unlike your song!

Elastic Waste Band: You are after my own heart! <3 Your use of vocoder (I think) makes you a bit hard to understand (not that I am one to talk!) but I thoroughly enjoy anything which uses chiptune elements. I definitely like the instrumentation though there are something of rough spots especially around two minutes in. Also it ends very suddenly.

Forestry Fighters: This has a very nice airy dreamy (Oh dear I did not realize that the adjective descriptive of being in the manner of a dream was not allowed to be used here. That is what the [CENSORED] quality was.) quality to it. These are very nice lyrics and I definitely like your singing. I think you remind me a lot of a lot of bands that I like a lot like The Sugarplastic and Gil Sans and Spiritualized and maybe a touch of Penguin Cafe Orchestra. I love this song a lot.

Jon Eric: Eek! Your singing always makes my ears hurt. The mix is also very off-balance with the vocals too loud and the rest too quiet. The lyrics are nice though. Also whistling is always good to have!

Melvin: This is pretty good power-rock. Nice and clean with easily understood lyrics. Sometimes the vocal harmonies are a little bit off-key, and the drums sound too fake, but it is otherwise a solid song!

Paco del Stinko: This song has a great jittery energy to it which keeps me very interested and a bit hoppy while it plays. I definitely have a tap in my toe right now and a bop in my head. It is also good that you do not have fear of letting it just be bass and drums at time and letting the notes which are not there fill in for what the listener should hear (it is something I need to learn to do). This is my favorite so far!

Tam Lin Music: Swingy ballad to the core? I like the mood which is established within the beginning. Really good lyrics with nice rhyming and cadence and rhythm. The way the instrumentation keeps on changing with very nice seamless transitions is very nice as it keeps my interest and appreciation up. I think this is another favorite so far! (Oh no it is getting harder to decide!) It makes me think a lot of Billy Joel "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" which is a song that makes me sick to my stomach because they used to play it ALL THE TIME at the laundromat I used to go to but this doesn't quite trigger my gagging reflex and so I like it though I guess it is not a favorite. But it is still good!

Thank You For The Frisbee: You are sounding better than the other songs of yours I have heard. You have that nice hoppy beat going on in parts but it is a bit jarring how it goes back and forth between that and the simple plucked chords. Also it ends very suddenly before I can really start to enjoy it.

Tinki Robotnik who I expect is actually Tiny Robots: You (always?) have a very nice voice and it works very well in this song. The song feels a bit short but it it is

x-tokyo-river-god: Hey! I have heard that drum beat before! This is a very nice moody dark song. The speech synthesizer (is that Apple Voices "whisper"?) sounds so spooky! I like this song a lot. It starts off very low-key but also nicely layered with a lot of swelling and emotional response evoked. I don't really like the snare drum marching drum sounds which come in halfway through because they sound out of place though there is very nice vocal harmonizing in that section. Then the chaotic stuff which is like orange noise up until the original patterns come back. This song just makes me focus on things.

AND NOW THE PUNCTUATION NAMES!

?: slow-mo frozen breakbeats and effected vocal scratching effects always get my love! There is definitely the head nod effect going on for this song. Beck would be proud of these lyrics. I like this song! I do like it. Yes. Songs like this make me think of the quote that in writing about music we should be writing about architecture though. I am not sure what to say! It something of a explanation defiance. I love it though. It is like Plaid or Aphex Twin or Autechere. This reminds me of O.0 too. I wonder what happened to him! I should ask about him(?) on that Where Are They Now thread. I think this is my current favorite!

@eclectic spOOns: Abstract drum funk! Also always gets my love. Punctuation bands are the best. Do you listen to Monotonik or Renku Corporation? I think that you should if you do not. I do not know what this has anything to do with the title however.

<3: Oh goodness I worked on this song for so long that I was actually seeing the notes as shapes in my head that were trying to fit together and I had to learn to whittle them around so that they would fit! I also had very many other strange ideas of what I was hearing and seeing with the music and I think I even saw God which is strange because he does not exist as far as I know. I think it is best not to go into it. But I love this song and love that I had done it though I think maybe the vocals come in a bit too loud. Still I think that this is the best song I have ever made and I am really happy with how it turned out.

ElasticWasteBand- Solid techno. Dig the voice. Not something I would listen to again, though. Just being honest.

Dear Ms. [Mary] Lucia,

In <a href="http://www.publicradio.org/tools/media/ ... .pls">your in-studio interview with Andrew Bird last year</a>, you mentioned that songs don't get written for you because nothing rhymes with "Lucia".

Over at http://www.songfight.org we decided to test that statement by holding a song fight with the title "Rhymes With Lucia."

Check it out if you have a spare minute or two. A couple of the entries turned out pretty nicely, although not everyone decided that "Lucia" is pronounced "Loocheeuh." Such is the nature of Song Fight-- you never know what the hell people are going to come up with.

Jon Eric is old timey fun! I am happily surprised and pleased.

Booty and her Chesterfield have the prescription. This is the kind of song that it's fun to turn up really loud in headphones or in the car, so that when you're done listening everything's a little muffled.

x-tokyo reminds me of college in the 90's and their acoustic bass sound is stellar. Make another one of these or I'll kill you.

Caravan Ray is like, tribal n' shit! Fun. Reminds me a tiny bit of both Roymond's "Sunny Again" and RxW's "One Thousand Swords". I wonder if there are enough of this kind of song in the archives to make a whole archive. You also are sounding kinda Hoblitesque on this track.

The Frisbee kids are nice indie pop fun. Cool. It's got the mondo-lyricky lyrics even.

Tam Lin Music is reminding me of some older Paul Simon, except I probably like it more. And I like Paul Simon.

Tiny Robots, hey! Erin's voice has gotten progressively more beautiful in the last year or so, and she's now dead on-pitch. Nice little tune, beautifully sung. But I think the mandolin player is having a seizure.

Spoons doesn't sound anything like Soundgarden. WTF? Needs more SMU.

Damn, I love when the bass comes in on that Forestry Fighters song. I'm going to put this into the montage scene in the film of my life, when I fall in love with the dark haired girl on my trip to Italy, which hasn't happened yet, but now I know it will.

Rhymes with Lucia- I like the singular title fights, because the quality is very high. This is a tough fight. I hate the singular titles because I'll probably never win A lot gems in this fight.

Booty Chesterfield Trio- The cowbell is funny. This is enjoyable. The slutty guitar riff is perfect with the cowbell abundance. You know I never considered pronouncing it (loo sha), I could've had the rhyme Fuchsia. Damn! Anyway cool track.

Caravan Ray-This is weird and cool. Didgeridoo riff is fantastic. This kinda rocks in it's own way. I dig it.

Chin Music- Reminds me of the mellow side of the Kinks (much better than Belle and Sebastion). This coiuld be on Village Green. I actually wish the guitars were a little louder. This is a very nice and haunting track. Definitely a keeper.

Darkest Daves- Dinasaur feet plodding along. Guitar tones are nice. This is actually very soothing. This reminds me of the band down the hall at Downtown Rehearsals in SF circa 1998 , they'd practice at like 2AM and were very pleasant to fall asleep to. Not bad , just wish it had a faster tempo really.

Eclectic Spoons- This is sooooo Eno. I love it. It's tough to pull off an ambient track, too often it get's boing, while the point is to be soothed. This is very enjoyable background music. I don't think it needed the vocals to come in at all. I can't make out everything said. The "one twisted Muthafucker" stands out. Good for a laugh, but I liked it best as an ambient track.

Elastic Wasteband- Not bad, pretty fun music. Too much vocoder.I wish it was juxtaposed with some straight vox somewhere.

Forestry Fighters- Nice to hear some 3/4 . This is fantastic! Great pop tune. Really well recorded too. Bass line makes me start singing Mr. Bo Jangles, but there's dozens of songs that do that. Just LOVE the vocals. Ah yes, I just saw who the cast was.Great melodies, maybe my favortie of the fight. Makes sense. This is a contender. Very strong song!

Jon Eric- Vocals are too loud. This is a cute little ditty. Vocals are so loud it's a struggle to hear the music. Cool writing none the less.

<Three- This is very enjoyable. Nice melodies, very catchy. Why the pitch shifted vocals? They're actually non-offensive, but I think they woould've been stronger sung straight. This is very well written. Good song!

Melvin- This rocks! Not my favorite Melvin song, they have lots of great stuff. This is as expected one of the stronger tunes in the fight. Great riff , great vox. Damn cool tune.

Paco Del Stinko- Another great track from PDS. Guitars are top notch as one is to expect from PDS. I have to say the weak link is the drums, they're solid just not as interesting as all the other tracks in this tune. I thought it was funny to hear another song with a spy theme. The guitar solo is my favorite part. Good job!

Tam Lin Music- Very nice! This is right in that 70's pop singer-song-writer vibe. Good melody! Nice writing!

Thanks For the Frisbie- Doubled vox are always cool. This song doesn't grab me as much as other TFtF tunes, which I'm usually blown away by. Nice tune anyway.

Tinski Robotnik- This is the best production of the fight. The vocals are very Cardigans. This is my prediction for winning the fight. Although I do love this track, this is a very strong fight. This is so good short and sweet. Very tasteful. Love the vocals!

Whatever- Nice fat drums! music is awesome. I'm not a fan of the Buthole Surfer vocal delivery. It's a shame because the music is really great. Especially the break beat creshendo/solo thing starting at about 2:15. The music keeps me interested the whole track.

X-Tokyo-River-God- First 2 minutes are fantastic in a Portishead kind of way. Then the bridge gets some Judy Collins vocal vibrato and the music isn't as interesting as what lead up to it. The music in the bridge is a nice noise, I just don't think it serves the composition. Thankfully it comes back to that delicious groove. I think I would've liked to hear the bass and drums hold steady while the keys and (guitars?) went off to space. Anyway, lots of goodness in this track!

Carpetburn- VOTE! This is just about my favorite genre that is not Zappa (late 90's Chicago Emo/Math). This sounds most like American Football, but by no means is a rip-off. I've grown really fond of the "Carpetburn/TMK" sound. This is one of my favorite Carpetburn entries. Love the clean tone guitar playing the most. Vocals are always good, bass is solid, drums are fantastic. Wonderful dynamics, great song-writing!

Daddy Bop- This is my entry this week. Everyone I knew was busy this week. So this is nearly a solo effort. I actually really like the chord pattern and some of the runs. I programmed in every beat of the drums and every piano,strings, Glock, and Vibraphone beat, but it was cheap software, and I guess it sounds like it. I left the bridge open for King to put his stamp on it. The night before it was due I had to beg him to come over and throw down the bass and the bridge. I find the Spanish funny, but I guess it is rather cliche'. I wish I mixed the bass better so you could hear the bass solo clearly. I also keep having this mix problem where I bury the acoustic 12-string, the end result you can't really hear it. I need to offer Ken a lot of money and have him show me what gear to buy and how to use it. So I really like the song I wrote, just wish I had better production skills and a stronger voice. Cheap Steve Durand? I've liked nearly everything I've heard from Steve Durand so this isn't exactly an insult, I don't really hear the similarities unless all things Spanish are Steve Durand.

So my favorites are Paco Del Stinko, Carpetburn, Forestry Fighters, Tinski Robotnik, and X-Tokyo-River-God (despite the bridge). My vote goes to Carpetburn just barely edging over Forestry Fighters.

Booty Chesterfield Trio - I really like this, you pull of this sound well. It's a style that lends itself to people who don't have access to the best recording equipment or methods and I think you nailed it.

Caravan Ray - Is that a didjeradoo? If so then this song is cool for that alone. Enigmatic, I probably wouldn't listen to it lots but it's might wind up on my playlist every now and then.

Carpetburn - Has a tasty Magnetic Fields meets The Killers quality. I could listen to a whole album of this.

Chin Music - Ever listened to Tea Party? If not, well, it's complimentary as far as I'm concerned.

Daddy Bop - I'm not sure what to classify this as. It seems both new and old and cheesy and sincere all at the some time. I like it and I don't.

The Darkest Daves - This song irritates me no end. Not only is it annoying that you didn't put any thought into lyrics, but what's even worse is that the music combined with your voice has such potential to do something very Nick Cave-y and atmospheric, but the opportunity is squandered.

@eclectic sp00ns - You remember Spoonman? Your name got me to thinking about that and that got me to thinking that actual spoons playing would have sounded really cool in this songs. I can actually hear it in my head. Disturbing pseudo lyrics. A little long for me.

EWB - Didn't do much for me. I like my vocodor songs up-tempo and cheesy.

Forestry Fighters - Very nice. I have a soft spot for songs like this. You should listen to The Lucksmiths if you don't already. This is my favorite so far.

Jon Eric - Your voice is almost vaudeville. This song is fun, I like. Work on your layered harmonies, they're a little off key. The whistling is priceless.

Less Three - Music sounds like a remix of Such Great Heights. I would have preferred to hear the vocals sung clean. The effect here makes it a little too silly in relation to the music, which is more sincere. I think you should re-post this song somewhere with normal vocals - I think I'd really like it then. The little "doo doos" and "la las" at the end are endearing.

Melvin - Polished and brilliant as usual. You can kill at will.

Paco del Stinko - This song's a good time. I like the "rhymes w/ Orange" part. I was originally intending to post a song to this fight and one of my ideas was to say that Lucia rhymes with orange. The little jazzy break towards the end reminds me of "Lie Still Little Bottle". It must be raining cuz a man ain't supposed to cry. Fun song, good lyrics.

Nameless (i'm too lazy to check to see which ONE person doesn't have a name) - Too bad there's no name on this song, I don't know who to compliment. Very nice song. One of my favorites this fight. A little long though. Your voice reminds me a little of David Byrne in places.

Thanks For The Frisbee - Sounds like a re-envisioning of the Gilligan's Island theme The music is nice, the strumming reminds me a little of Sondre Lerche in places and those are my favorite parts. The Fade ending is a little too sudden, could have slowed that fade a bit.

Tinski Robotnik - LOVE IT. Have to go back to listen to FF to see if I like it better than that one. You would like The Mariner's Revenge Song and Cautionary Tale by The Decemberists.

Whatever - Some of the better electronic I've heard. The vocals are almost TOO similar to Pepper by Butthole Surfers, but otherwise I like.

X-Tokyo River God - Vocals are really nice. The synthesizers at the beginning are a little too 80's John Hughes movie soundtrack for me. The rest is very nice.

This was a really good fight. It seems like most everyone was bringing their A-Game. Makes me feel like I'm picking the wrong time to get back into this

Went back and listened to FF and TR. FF is beautiful and melancholy. TR is brilliant and fun. Trying to choose between the two of those is like trying to choose between beer and coffee...I love them both for opposite reasons. I guess you'll just have to wait and see which I vote for...

to address the terrible ending for my song, the song was supposed to be longer and hopefully better, but time ran out on me and i had to make a command decision to fudge the ending. i thought the song still deserved a run at it anyway.

I think you're doing pretty well when people's biggest complaint about your song is that it ends too soon.

I would use my normal register instead of pitch shifting but I cannot go high up enough because my voice is poopy. u_u

The Booty Chesterfield Trio: Like the trashy vibe and real drums. The mix seems a little off though, especially the buried lead guitar.

Caravan Ray: This song makes me want to march a very long distance for some reason. Great driving beat and vocals. I’m going to use this in my new documentary, March of The Melvin. It’s one of several projects I currently have in development.

Carpet Burn: Still one of my favourite bands. The intricacy of guitar/bass/drum interplay continues to make me feel boring and untalented. Great stuff all around.

Chin Music: Nice lyrics and guitar playing, but I’m rarely in the mood for anything quite this dark and solemn.

Daddy Bop: I like this. The instrumentation and vocal delivery are just floating somewhere between pop, synth prog, and elevator music. It’s melodically and harmonically ambitious, with absolutely no pretension whatsoever. It works.

The Darkest Daves: Chin Music was dark and solemn but felt totally cool and authentic. This kind of stuff just makes me laugh because it seems so overwrought and, ultimately, corny. Or perhaps I just don't "get it", which I confess may be the case.

Eclectic Spoons: I like the sounds used in much of this, but it lacks something in the way of songwriting.

Elastic Waste Band: This is just not my thing.

Hi everyone.

I didn't expect anyone to like my song this week, which was a solo effort instead of the sterio dave/hkd action you are used/or not used to. However, i feel the need to place my song in context.

For a start, the genre is doom metal. Which, admittedly means as much as black metal or death metal to most of you, it's all the same. I don't know.. but while I don't feel this song could ever stand on it's own as a single, i felt there was a certain hypnotic quality to the droning vocal and guitar combination. Eh, it's probably just me and my ego, which propels me to ultimately like anything I produce, but rather than shelf it as I do most half formed songs, I felt the need to submit it. It is overly long, but that was unintentional. My apologies to anyone who actually felt some strange need to listen all the way through -- why did you do that? whyyy? As for the mentions of Marilyn Manson and Rammstein -- why do you bother exposing your ignorance like that? Just tell me how much you dislike it. If you can't be bothered telling me what you hate about it, don't say anything at all. ooh dear. touchy, arn't we. tich tich. Sigh, at least if jute gyte didn't like it, I would know at least attain the the proper ranking as a failed human being.

I completely admire your ability to sequence drums, it's interesting all the way through. Though i wish the drum samples were better, or disguised with effects. Compression+reverb can do a long way to making things sound... if not more natural, a little more punchy.

Elastic Wasteband - Nice 80's era synth. Vocoded vocals. Nice nice.

Less than 3 : I like the breakbeat, I like the 8bit bassline. Dislike the vocals, though like how you've tried to make them less awful with the pads in the chorus and such. I really like the structure of the break/soloy synth part followed by the vocal copy... actually like like all of this, and the vocals have grown on me. Good work, the layers all work together very well.

Melvin - likeing this straight away because of the guitars. This sounds strangely composed like a c64 song. Very cool all the way, I like your vocals. I wish the soloy part was a bit longer. Cool. Also a contender at this point.

Paco del Stinko - this.. is... genius. or maybe it's the alcohol hitting my brain. Genius i say! I may also vomit. hooray!! ... no, seriously, this is awesome.

Tinski Robotnik - beautiful vocals. I love the music too. Damn. lots of good songs this fight. Beautiful, too short. >_< I listened to twice twice. so pretty.

Whatever/? - Drum and bass meets butthole surfers style lyrics. I like this alot as well. oh look, reading through comments reveals that everyone else thought the same thing. oh well. Double thumbs up from me. I don't know who i'm going to vote for anymore...

xtoykorivergod - I love your bassline, i like the whole loungey female vocs.. . aw i like it all. *hugs*

Stinkers: Another really cool top notch submission, you certainly have a head full of ideas, this is quite literally faultless, excellent playing and really cool vocals around tongue-in-cheek lyrics, the jazz/blues breakdown follwed by the scat was inspired.

Dark Dave: This is okay to me, I can really appreciate this, maybe a touch irritating towards the end, but I love the descent into hell approach, Forboding!

?: Big loud intro, then that gentle keyboard, the female vox are disturbingly good, took me a few listens to fall for this, but fall i did, there is just so much going on in this track, maybe the loud middle bit (you know) is a touch too long, but generally an excellent submission.

Frisbee's: Hello TFTF welcome back! now this is a touch more polished and a touch less anti-folk, which makes it so much more accessable, nice melody you got going there, not too keen on the fade-out though, doesnt seem to fit the feel of the track!

Carpets: Blindingly good lyrics, by far the best carpetburn track i've heard, cannot begin to offer critique.

Chins: Strange evocative poetic lyric nicely delivered, extremely sparse tune, gets better with multiple listens, I do love the way the alt vox builds behind the main vocal.

Tam Lins: In the battle of the 'Musics' this takes the honours by a tight margin, mainly for being more mainstream and accessable, lovely lyric!

<3: Happy bubble gum feel to this, with those eerily affected cartoon vocals, does tend to make this slot quite easily into the quirky envelope, but y'know it refuses to stay there, generous amounts of infectious poppy goodness going on here.

Tinski: Aw shit! this is great, love this from the moment you take that first breath, the russian take is cool, lyrically this reminds me of 'Babooshka'

Melvin: Much more like it Melvin, the verses are 100% quality, maybe let down in the chorus, fantastic lyrics (again!) extremely solid and will enjoy many listens.

Jon Eric: Slightly geekish feel (which I tend to feel is intentional) is really appealing, you sound an awful lot like the guy from 'Cheese on Bread' now most people would have the whistling as a break, but oh no not you, it just goes smack into the tune and works perfectly.

Forest Guys: Hmm! for this listener it's maybe a touch boring! (no please don't get upset!) nothing bad here it just kinda washes over without enough jumping up and going "hey listen to me", the 'spectral projection' bit is a nice line...

Caravan Harris: Brilliant from the intro to the last note, fuckin' excellent track, reminds me of when I was little watching the Rolf Harris show, all it needs is Rolf himself to pop up with his 'can you see what it is yet?' followed by much 'hoo hah!' and a little 'sun-a-rise' in the outro to fade... you know if this was commercially available then I'd buy it, makes me smile sooo much!

Daddy Bop: Really nice feel and sounds but again tends to wash over me in a similar way that FF did (maybe its just me?) loses my interest too early though the 'dramas dont come any juicier' is a nice line, maybe listen to the latin section of this and try to make the music more latin flavoured in that part!

X-Tokyo: Fuckin' sweet, a real 'Last Beat of my Heart' feel that Siouxsie would be proud of, unfaulteringly haunting!

Elastic Trousers Suspenders: There's just not enough vocoder vox around these days and this fills the gap nicely, unortunately it doesnt fill any other gap, nothing wrong with it but it just passes my by, some nice techo touches though!
