Give me a shout after you go through the grinder, I think I am now capable of collaborating.
Anyone who is interested in submitted a raw, separated vocal track for our next song, you can find a very rough reference recording of Dude And Catastrophe called "dude_rough.mp3" on the Klownhole site at:

http://klownhole.org/audio/dude_rough.mp3

if you want to send me a vocal track, I'll integrate it into the mix and submit it as a collaborative effort. Just send me (rferrin4@comcast.net) an mp3 that tracks with the dude_rough.mp3 file. And we will make history. The next Stairway to Heaven. Or Rock You Like A Hurricane. No, Another Piece of Meat. But not really sounding like that. Perhaps it will sound like Suzanne Vega. Not likely though. Anyway, this an open invitation, everyone is welcome. Even Hoblit. Especially Hoblit!

Damn, that rocks! I'd love to help, but I don't have the kind of voice that would do this song justice. Very dramatic!

Just figured I'd let you know, the thought of a collaboration between the two of you is one of my great fears. Because it would probably win. And I'd lose even more than I already do.

Hey Wages - I tried to respond to your email. Not sure if it went through. If this Internet thing doesn't start working correctly it will never catch on. My response to your question regarding lyrics:

That would be excellent, go nuts on the lyrics. We were too drunk by the time we were done to effectively write lyrics. We would love to see what someone else comes up with though. Is that ok? If not, I could try to pull something together. Let me know.

Adnoisium: It has a bit of a hook but nothing or real merit here.

Andre: this is quite cool, in a simple melancholy way. I like your whisper, and the way the song has a kind of shambolic inability to hold together is charming.

Bear Squadron: As far as totally random comedy track s goes this is pretty fun. almost as good as the Avalon Singers.

Bellison: Quite well played, structured, produced and all that stuff. The song passed me by a bit, it reminded me of a couple of other songs that I can't quite remember the names of, possibly Gomez b-sides.

Billy's little trip: At first I thought this was cool cos it's energetic and all the rest of the songs in the fight so far have been a bit sluggish but it drags after 2 minutes.

Cranial Biffida: ooh sinister. not my thing but not a bad song. The trouble with this style is it really benefits from the kind of production it's very difficult to acheive in a bedroom with midi drums. good mix nonetheless. and good name.

Cynthia Size & le Sp00ns: I'm looking forward to this, nothing against your vocals or nuffink but....you know the score, I suffer from the same thing. disappointed that the vocals are mixed really low then, but no worries. funky grooves and I like all the metallic sounds, very upbeat. Are you actually playing that wah-wah guitar, or is it a sample? that sounds really well done, not that I doubt your skillz. nice vocal effects, this is my fave so far (but for how long? Damien's up next, oooooh). the ending could be better.

the man Verrett: Your stuff is so much more enjoyable to listen to since you learnt to mix, this isn't the most instant song but it's still good. Worth keeping so I can let it sink in. In fact I feel a Jonas session coming on, you should do an album. Good

Dangereus: Sounds like Tortoise. not bad, not great.

Danyer: Okay, you suck but this is still great. It's not so bad it's good, some of it is really good, but bad at the same time. you guys have got the whole love thing nailed. see, those noises at the end confirm it. awww

Dean Sky: I like some of these lyrics, the musicianship is competent but nothing grabs me.

Les freres de la Durands: get to the trumpet solo already! that's all I'm here for. I'm guessing Steve mixed this, it's got that Steve mix sound. Harmonies are good. This ain't a bad song, but it seems happy trundling along and I'm no trundler. and you denied me the brass action, curse you.

Emergency Pizza Party: well there's no mistaking your opinions on the subject. track isn't bad, I was starting to get a bit bored then it chagned up a bit so that was cool. Didn't rock my world but lyrically, structurally, and production-wise it was good.

Freidrich Honighosen: Does nothing for me.

Glenn Case: It doesn't sound like your firing on all cylinders, but nonetheless this is a nice song, one that I'd be perfectly happy to listen to in a non-songfight situation (rather than pissing myself laughing, which applies to too many entries this week I feel). You're good at writing melodies which sound like you've been singing them for years, as opposed to a week. nice.

Jimmy Jet and his TV set: This is never going to be as good as I want it to be, which is as good as 'Jimbo and the Jet-Set', an unfair comparison maybe, but that's what you get for naming yourself so. This is very difficult to have a strong opinion on because the verses just go completely in one ear and out the other, the chorus is ok but not amazing and it feels weird the way it comes in so much louder than the verse.

Klownhole: Okay, I'm imagining going about my boring, dull day and seeing you guys playing in the office, on street corners and in MacDonalds (not that I ever go in there) and it in that context this is good. In fact you should set up a Klownhole society in every town dedicated to making everyones lives rock in a more surreal way.

The Narcaloungers: This was sounding very well done until the electric guitar came in. I highly recommend using a different setting to 'Bedroom distortion'. I'm not totally in love with this song but it is quite good, my big problem with this is (and as I type this the keyboard comes in as if to prove my point) that all of the instruments sound like they come from different bands and it doesn't gel very well. Either the guitar is too hard rockin or the drums aren't enough, the singing is good, in fact all the playing is good but you all sound like you're pulling in different directions, this can cause brilliant results but unfortunately it doesn't here. yeah, that keyboard patch; what were you going for? emphasising the comedy contrast between all the parts. Sorry, not a great review there, but I hope you stick around cos you sound quite talented.

Neil be: This is only just interesting enough for me to not skip it, it's not the worst song here by far, but I'm starting to get serious reviewing fatigue. Song is boring me but the production is strange, kind of eighties sounding, especially the vox. Not bad piano playing.

Our Dog: The vocals make you sound like Klownhole, ie, comedy proto-metal.

Paco: thank fuck. entertain me! OOOahaaaahhaahooh. woah, how low can you go, you did sound like Barry White, but now you also sound like Klownhole with a bit of Rocky Horror soundtrack thrown in for good measure. Yes, I would definitely book you to play this at my wedding. if I ever got married, which I can't see happening any time soon. but when I do I will definitely feel the same way as I do now, which will probably ruin my marriage, but it will be worth it.

Rone Rivendale: Man, I wanna be nice and constructive, but.....stop making shit music. Please? beats: bad, tune: bad, singing: well, you try. I hate saying this. but I can't even admit I like any part of this. It's no better than songs you were making this time last year. I wish it was, and I really hope that this year is the one where you get the skills.

Glennny Frisbates: Well here's a collab worth hearing if ever there was one. I don't even need to hear it to know I'll be downloading it, thankyou for making me feel better about slating Rone. I won't vote for you cos I doubt you even need to try that hard to make kick ass tunes. harsh maybe but I'll be listening to this a lot more so you have that.

Voh: The voice sounds familiar. I thought this wasn't going ot grab me on the basis of the opening bars but it's got some little bits which i quite like, the way the guitar doesn't solo so much as flourish here and there which seems so much more elegant in the context of the song. well done for being restrained, nice.

Wages: Ooh, with drums. 'bout time. but you've resurrected that horrific guitar tone. You've got all this skillz this week don't you? Your vocals are sticking more to the key of the song this time too (pot calling the kettle black I know, but you actually have a good voice). The percussion definitely adds a dynamic and structure that your songs have been needing. not bad.

yesyesnoyes: intro reminds me of Sting for some reason. Or is that not just an intro.....wtf? some of that was quite cool, dunno what the shouting was about, AArgh, or that, no need for that. ear death. bastards.

Zipline: Intro is a good idea cos it made me think that not much was going to happen, then the bit at around 40 seconds fades in and has a cool groove going on, I like the changes, the guitar sounds really Police-y, and once the song settles in to itself it's pretty cool in a Dinosaur Jr kind of way. Your voice actually fits with it really well, nice riffage, good changes generally, I do like a good time signature shift. I think the drum rolls could be a bit more varied but nmo worries, very energetic. I like.

Melvin: S'not bad, but it feels like a step back for you. glad you're writing again though, I much preferred your Robot baby so sorry for not reviewing last week. In terms of the kind of emo/pop punk that you do this errs too much on the pop-metal side of things (guitar harmonies scream My Chemical Romance who can eat my vomit frankly) rather than the intricate hardcore strain of emo that I prefer. That doesn't stop this from shitting over 90% of the material here from a height.

Jacob Lynn: I'm gonna give you the coveted 'Sounds-most-like-TMK' award this week and that often comes with a vote. This is cool, and quite a good song but none of it is quite as cool as the opening few bars and when the beat comes in, for some reason the vocals remind me of TMBG when what I want to think of is cLOUDDEAD which is what this is really like (and who are way cooler). we should collab at some point, soon-ish, I'm a bit diosorganised at the moment.

I think I'm gonna vote for Nigel and co

You may be right about that. I wanted to tell a story, and perhaps I took that a bit too far. Usually don't do that, though, so I'm making a mental note of not doing that again :)

Thanks! The idea was to entertain, so I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

No shaker, sorry. Though that may be the cheap equipment I use, which has a way of adding background noises whenever it pleases ;)
Thanks for the Frisbee wrote:oh man, lyrically cant compete with the other song about being in love with someone elses wife. however it is the flipside of glen's song. his song was selfless. and yours is selfish. lyrics aside, its okay.
I was planning on saying I didn't know this was a competition, but I'm thinking the irony would probably be lost. You know how every wedding reception has the drunk uncle or something similar? The one who demands to make a speech, then makes a fool of himself and possibly others? This time it's the best friend of the groom, who's making a fool of... the groom.
martyr wrote:Deep acoustic and baratone vocal. The picky guitar lick solo thing is cool. The vocals are doubled. They may have been better served harmonized (thirds maybe?) Are you seriously singing about positions and bending? Wow, well we all need to express ourselves.
Express myself? :P Though I agree that the vocals are doubled, I disagree on interpreting this as anything other than fictional ;)

Thanks for the comments!

To those who said it wasn't their cup of tea - thanks for taking the time to listen to it anyway :)

some quick reviews

Glenn Case:possible vote i like it a lot and good voice, but the lyrics are reeeally cheesy.

paco del stinko:awesome guitar

andre was here at midnight: i like it but the recording is really ghetto and whoever is on the bass drum needs to learn to count.

voh: needs more variety. maybe make the lead guitar into an ambient electric or something. and make the vocals louder

thank glenny for the frisbee:possible vote.

Melvin: only thing bad is the chorus seems a little off.

Adnosium- It's like the Magnetic Fields , but not witty nor as musical. I brace myself to laugh, thinking "oh boy this will be hilarious" but not really funny.

Andre Was here at Midnight- Some really big timing issues. I like the vocal delivery, though the melody sounds tentative.

Bear Squadron- OK, this makes me laugh. This is ridiculous. Enjoyable!

B. Ellison- I like this a lot. The organ is the best part. Drums are played well, but I don't think the beat serves the song too well. Nice and moody, I'd rather hear an ending, than have a fade out. Good Job!

Billy's Little Trip- Awesome! This sounds like a punkier T. Rex. Bassline is fantastic, a little strangely high in the mix however. I'm bummed there's no guitar solo, such a rockin tune, it'd be really fun to solo over! Contender!

Cranial Biffida- This is pretty cool in a gothy way. This reminds me of New York in 2000. Pretty cool!

Cynthiasize & Eclectic Sp00ns- This is awesome. Spoons always appeals to my Eno fandom. This is very Remain in Light musically. I agree the vocals should be a little more out front. Not a very strong song in a songy sense, but a very strong groove and very listenible and dancible. Great song to work to!

Damien Verrett- I always enjoy Damiens vocal delivery. This is pretty great. What happened at 90 seconds? The parts are pretty disjointed. I really really really want drums on this song. Cool ideas sewn together strangely for me.

Dangerous- Nice guitaring! Some tasty playing. With a real drummer I'd agree with the Tortoise assertion. With breathy vocals it could be the Sea and Cake. Good stuff!

Danyer- very funny on my 1st listen, but more annoying on repeated listens. With higher production value and more conviction this could be a Ween tune.

Deux Freres- Nothing wrong with this song, I like it a lot! Nice harmonies! Not my favorite genre but very good in such!

Emergency Pizza Party- This is alright for the genre.

Fried Rich Honighosen Project- Sounds like torture. Nothing grabbing me on this one.

Glenn Case- This is pretty great! I just love, and am jealous of your voice. The verse is weak, but maybe that's what nakes the chorus all the stronger. The chorus is extremely strong. I wish the guitar riff and drums wee more interesting, but I guess they're obviously not the focus of the song. Man, those harmony vocals are SOOOO GOOD! This is a keeper a contender and the song to beat. Awesome!

Jacob Lynn- This is very good. Almost the opposite of the Glenn Case tune in that I find the music very interesting, and am let down by the chorus, it's not bad just not that strong. The piano line is the best part.

Jimmy Jet and his TV Set- Very loose, why the tempo change? There so little holding this together, it's very disjointed. Why the organ? Singing is not bad guitar is not bad, just think this would be better without the percussion and a more solid transition to the chorus.

Klownhole- Not sure if you guys care about my opinion, but it's as if you do. This is my favorite Klownhole tune to date. Awesome riffs! The organ is a great touch! This track is a keeper. Short sweet, great entry guys!!!!!

Melvin- I can't believe this track isn't getting as much love as I think it deserves. I LOVE this track!!!!!! The dual guitars will always do it for me, these are done well. Melvin always has top notch singing and production. This is just fantastic pop. Contender, Keeper, awesome as usual!

Narcaloungers- Ooh Baby do you know what that's worth? ooh Heaven is Because the Night belongs to lovers. I kid. Nice vocals, not so nice harmonies, pitch is fine, timing is off. Drum fills are terrible. Nothing original here, but I like the voice of the vocalist!

Neil Be- Music is pretty great, the synths are campy but in a very entertaining way. The piano is great. I wish the vocals weren't so Reverberated. Verses are much stronger than the chorus. Cool stuff, I want to hear more!

Our Dog- I never thought in my life I'd say this but, the guitar is a little too loud in the mix. Same with the vocals. The music is pretty cool, I dig it.

Paco Del Stinko- A Songfight hero of mine. HOLYCRAP DUDE! This is sooooooooo tight! This is incredible! Thanks for the guitar comments you made about me, very kind, but I think you win the Guitarist award for this fight, BY FAR! This song RULES! All the riffs are bitchin! Flawless entry, I just Love it! Very original and funny! I'm so awe-struck, jealous, impressed, afraid, nervous, and taken aback that I must challange you to a guitar duel! This is my favorite of the fight.

Rone Rivendale- Sucks you had to follow Paco. The vocal delivery is funny, it's kinda the Rone Rivendale thing. I don't dig the beats that much.

Thank Glennny for the Frisbee- Hey this is Frisbee and me. I've been a fan of Frisbees entries ever since Not Exactly Normal. I think he is the strongest gng act on the Fight consistantly. I was in the middle of wading through my Zipline track when I got the email from Fris containing the rough draft of this song. BTW this is the rough draft that i just ran with. The song is just plain great as a gng. It was an honor and privelege to be able to accentuate the rhythms and melodies that were there from the start. This is one of my favorite projects I've been involved in. Fris and I will be working together again, thanks for all the kindness!

Voh- Nice guitar riffage, vocal melody isn't that interesting. Nice little ditty.

Wages- Hey man, you're getting there! It's so nice to hear a steady beat with you. Great voice as usual. Not a fan of the guitar tone, but there's a lot of goodness going on here.

Yes No Yes- Egarts yrev si siht this is very strange.

Zipline- We had a rough idea of a song. It was about 15 minutes long. The intro/outro is be being spontaneous. We liked it for like a Pigs on the Wing kind of bookend to the song. I think it makes more sense in the 15 minute version. I tried to cut this into a nice composition. We all really like the result, we'll probably lose the intro/outro or find someone with a good voice to carry it. Come on people Sammy tears the Hell out of the drums on this track! It's all about Sammy for me on this track. I'm also fond of the Marty vocal moments that remind me of Jeremy Enigk. Maybe this song is more fun to play than listen to, but I enjoy it. The Rush call is right on, Sammy and I met in 1991 at UC Riverside with a love for and fanatical devotion to Rush, along with a shredding bass player we used to cover a large portion of the Rush catalog focussing on the longer proggier stuff. The night we recorded this song with Marty we ran through Xanadu as a warm up. I think it got us in the 7/8 mood. The 4th riff has a similar feel to a Xanadu riff also. (the descending scale lick). You know I actually covet the "Sounds most like TMK" award. I really thought I had a shot with the 5/4 clean tone Minus the Ghosts and Vodka Bear opening riff, but alas I'm just not the tapping genious that FurryPedro is, but it was very fun to play!

My faves are Paco, Melvin, Frisbee, Billy's Little Trip, GCase, and Klownhole

Ok, everyone was kind enough to take the time for a review, but I opted to wait a few weeks to allow you SF'ers to get to know me before I offer my opinions and comments. But to show my community spirit, I'll do a brief review................of the band names.

Bear Squadron - The forest goes to hell in a hand basket during hibernation.
Emergency Pizza Party - I LOVE an emergency Zah party, especial if there's no emergency.
Billy's Little Trip - who?
Adnoisium - sick name dude
Cranial Biffida - a congenital cleft of the skull. Do you have a super hero chin?
Rone Rivendale - Great grandson of the founder of the highschool the Archie's went to......oh, and you spelled Riverdale wrong.
Our Dog - woof
Yes Yes No, Yes - My last blind date. She was all into me until she felt my face, but luckly I just so happened to have a banana in my pocket, so she agreed in the end.
Deux Freres - Two Freres are always better than one, I always say
Wages - What is the minimum these days?
Melvin - Who'd of thunk that a nerd invented the G-string and made a zillion bux?
The Friedrich Honighosen Project - Do you wear leather shorts with suspenders? lucky!
Klownhole - I'm picturing a red balloon knot. :?
Damien Verrett - Demonic polecat
Thank Glennny for the Frisbee - Thank you Glenny
Danyer - He called me a cunt. Honestly, who says that? Image
Dangerous - answer: what is an underage horny girl
Paco del Stinko - Quite the contrary. Your lead guitar smells pretty good actually
Glenn Case - Where you keep your Glenn's
Dean Sky - Hippie high school principle.
The Narcaloungers - A bunch of lazy boys
Zipline - ...and sinker
Jimmy Jet and His TV Set - Image << Jimmy
Jacob Lynn - Paul Lynn's straight brother
B. Ellison - I'd rather B John Malkovich, but hey, I'll try anything once...twice if I like it.
Cynthia Size and her Eclectic SpOOns - Is Cynthia bigger than super or less. ....oh, and you spelled electric wrong. Image
Voh - Add a g and you'd be the leading place in popularity and style.
Andre Was Here At Midnight - ...and broke every chair he sat in before sunup.
Neil Be - A honey producing insect on one knee.

The truth is, I love ALL original music and styles. it's easy for me to see through poor recording to allow myself to enjoy the song. I burned all of the wedding song entries on a cd and I've been listening to them all week. I'm picking up on some great writing that I didn't hear when I first played them. Kudos to everyone.
