Thank you for the enlightenment, and my apologies in advance to the gentleman from Blackburn. Just to make matters worse, perhaps, I think the Austrailian reference stemmed from my thinking that it might've been our friend Caravan Ray under an alias.

I was logging on to say that between here and your Lester Banks site, I find your reviews to be well written, entertaining and often light-shedding experiences. I'm a hack, but I enjoy a good read. Thanks again.

Sure, you can be in my marriage, I'm looking for a professional cowbell player. My song could totally use more cowbell. Nicholas Cage, haha, he does seem to be livin' on the corner of dude and catastrophe most of the time, doesn't he. Nice reference, thank you.
Paco Del Stinko wrote: BLT f/Yours Truly - My first collaboration, although I didn't write any of it. Rough around the edges, I think that's part of what drives the song:it doesn't feel like an imitation of anything, but rather true to itself. Long for Songfight, it doesn't feel it to me as it drives so well. Good mood and lyrics, perfect voice for this too.
This is my first online joint effort as well, so we broke each others collaboration hymens. Thank you for being rough. I was concerned about the length too (no pun intended), but I was trying to give the closest thing to live energy. I honestly feel that the lead solos carried this song all the way through, but I think the grand finale' made it all worth the wait. Just my opinion.

Very very average. Sorry. Maybe it’s an anti-boy-rock on my part.
Wow, you're very descriptive, right down to the manufacturer of the straw, lmao! I wish I had a second appendix, but I did taste something organy after donating my larynx to this charity. I don't know what average is yet, but if this is it, I really must stride for above average, or at least average with cheese. Thanks for the comments Jay Money

Billy's Little Trip - Catchy tune, and the solo fits nicely, though the bends on the high notes often end up a bit off-key. Vocals are muddy and inaudible, which is a real shame, but they are mostly in tune. Good solid ending.

Chonchi Station and the Power Converters - That's... uh... interesting. I wish that the vocals weren't so hard to listen to, because I haven't ruled out the possibility that they might be witty. Sadly, I daren't give it a second listen.

Gigavolt Sound Machine - Pretty good. It's a bit repetitive, though that's the nature of the genre, I suppose.

Jimmy Jet and his TV Set - It sounds like all the instruments are playing different songs. I admire you for giving this a go, because that chorus has some potential, but it's not a winner.

Klownhole and Pals - This has a very full, rich sound that falls from the speakers like the vapourising ice from an upright freezer. Slight lack of direction, but it's a good performance. Enjoyable to listen to, which is notable as this genre of music normally makes me want to stab a puppy.

Luke Henley - I can't decide how I feel about this on the basis of 2 or 3 listens. It's got good ingredients, but the overall result just isn't hitting me (gestures to chest cavity) *there*.

MC Frontalot feat. Brad Sucks - I can imagine Chris Onstadt (creator of Achewood) adopting this as his theme tune. It's polished, the rapping has just the right amount of quirkiness, and it rises to the optional challenge with aplomb. The chorus has also stuck in my head ever since I first heard it. However, my mp3 player app (Beep Media Player) crashed twice while trying to play it through. Coincidence?

Melvin - Seized my interest from the opening note, and held on to it with sensible transitions and good melodies. Vocals are nice and clear, which meant I could hear every word! Hurrah! It's not too long and it's superbly produced. Minor gripe: it sounds like something that could be used as incidental music on Dawson's Creek. Which is a compliment on the song itself, but also made me throw up a little in my mouth at the thought.

Ninja Bachelors - Nice sound, uncluttered and crisp. The vocalist sounds uncomfortable - I imagined a huge coughing fit immediately after the fade to zero. And it made my throat hurt too, so I'm not going to be listening to this song again, even though it's perfectly competent.

Octothorpe feat. Marcus Kellis - Crackle crackle crackle crackle clip clip clip twang twang twang. This sounds like something off of my first "album". I recognise that "electric guitar played with a fingernail instead of a plectrum" sound anywhere. This song would work really well live, but I feared for the lifespan of my speakers while playing it.

Our Dog - Could have done with something in the midrange to give it a bit more meat, but that was probably an intentional stylistic decision. Mercifully brief.

Paco Del Stinko - For some reason, this reminded me of Bowie. David, not Knife. Of note: great bassline, and I love the Fraggles doing backing vocals. You've clearly put a lot of time and effort into this, and it shows - there's plenty going on, and lots of ideas all mixed into the pot. I love this song.

Quesadilla Explosions - There seems to be a heavy Red Hot Chili Peppers influence running through this. The pops are imaginative, and in general the song's catchy and singalongable. Good work.

Several Thousand Dollars In Motion - I'm in two minds. I don't want to insult the vocalist's style, but it's really not working for me. On the other hand, I'm not sure that the song would be as effective if they were delivered any other way. Cute song, all things considered. Short, sweet, leaves you wanting more.

Shambles Square feat. MC Heapey - Winner of the Song Fight Electro-Pop subcategory for this week, by a country mile. Great song, great lyrics, great delivery. Can't find fault.

Those Meddling Kids - Do you like Elbow, by any chance? That's what I was initially reminded of in this song. Those high-pitched noises at 50 seconds onwards were a little too harsh, and spoiled what was (until then) a very enjoyable listen. But the song just grows and grows and grows as it progresses, coming to a very appropriate ending. Full of depth and soul, a very substantial song.

Wages - The quality of the vocals could do with some work. The underlying song is super, but the performance just felt a little disappointing. The moments where all the instruments came in (eg at 2:00) felt like they could have been spine-shiver-inducers if some of the gaps were plugged. And that loud guitar solo at 2:30 just pissed me off. That was unforgiveably loud.

Zipline - The drumming sounded pretty good, but the lead guitar seemed to aim for "jazzy" and fell right off the end of "tuneless", which distracts from what is fundamentally a good song. The vocals also didn't seem to mesh with the rest of the song very well - I felt like they could have done with some compression and reverb, but that's just me.

MC Frontalot and Brad Sucks? Ack.

At the risk of criticizing my favorite musician, must say that it was supposed to be a song worth tatooing on my arm, like, forevermore. Then again collaboration is encouraged, so it is okay.

As always happens in Songfight, I now love it by the second playing anyway along with half the tracks.

Billy’s Little Trip w/ Paco- Well I instantly loved this due to Paco’s 1st solo. Man those solos are good! The song is good. The drum sound bugs me, fake drums I take it. There’s a squishiness on the MP3 compression which is distracting too. I love Billy’s voice! I think the bass is in a good place in the mix, but could maybe stand to be a smidge higher, I say that because last week it was way too loud, but very good. This is a keeper, I’m going to steal Paco’s licks. ;)

Chonchi Station and the Power Converters-Cute interesting music, with interesting voices saying nothing interesting. This would be more enjoyable with better dialog. The quirky electronica is fun. The last 20 seconds of GNG is the strongest part, a fun 1st listen, won’t get many repeats I’m afraid.

Gigavolt Sound Machine- Nice riffs, nice melodies, nice beats. The vocoder kills it for me. I’m happy to hear it as a nuance, but as a vehicle it drives me nuts. Good tune otherwise.

Jimmy Jet and his TV Set- The written song is not bad. The vocal performance isn’t bad. It’s very hissy. The guitar is sloppy, and with no drums, it really needs to be tight , which it isn’t. It all sounds very drunk. Bass is solid.

Klownhole and Wages and Jeff Robertson- I was really looking forward to this, I’m frankly disappointed. It’s too long and disjointed. You guys need a little more time to work something out it sounds like. Wages voice sounds great over the Klownhole-ness. This song desperately needs a melody I hope you guys collab again, you can still hear the potential, you just didn’t get it on this track.

Luke Henley- Watch the Aristocrats lately? Not a bad gng chord pattern melody and harmony. The lyrics don’t do anything for me, if they made me laugh I’d love this I’m sure.

MC Frontalot featuring Brad Sucks- I’m living in some Bizzaro world. This rap song is my favorite. Not my genre, but this track does everything right. The grooves are groovy, the sing-talk flows. The Bass is awesome channeling Bootsy. Drums are great too. I just love all the music. Guitars and random noises are appropriate and interesting. The chorus vocals are great too. If I like this track best, I predict a landslide. Great job!!!!!

Melvin- I’m a fan. I haven’t heard a Melvin tune I haven’t liked. The really strong point of this song is the vocals and the harmonies. This is near the top, and a keeper. I think the bridge is really strong, I love the riff behind it. Great songwriting!!!

Ninja Bachelors-A poor Tom Waits imitation over a Velvet Underground groove. It’s actually played really well. The vocals though shticky are done very well. This is a pleasant enough tune, but pretty forgettable.

Octothorpe- Drums are solid, Vocals are very entertaining. Man, I know the guitar is supposed to be bad, but geez that’s painful as a guitarist to listen to. Think I’d like it better as just drums bass and vox, making it a little more bohemian, which I think it is at heart.

Ourdog- Muppets gone bad. Nice riffs! Elmo Metal! This is ridiculous. I’m enjoying a good laugh however.

Paco Del Stinko- If anyone can challenge MC Frontalot it’s Paco. Damn! This is fantastic AGAIN! Paco you’re consistently awesome! While the vocal delivery is kind of silly at points, the performance is sooooo tight and spot on I’m awestruck. Every instrument is played nearly to perfection. Now I have a tough choice. One of the best things about Songfight is the free new truly indie music, I pretty much get a new song by one of my favorite artists (Paco) every week. Great job!

The Quesadilla Explosion- Hey, this is GREAT! OK, another Contender. Love the riffs, great drums, vocals are good and entertaining. I love it. Keeper, Contender, very well done!

Several Thousand Dollars in Motion- I’m always a sucker for breathy mousy female vocals. Not much of a melody here. Why the tambourine? I think it detracts more than adds.

Shambles Square featuring MC Heapey- Entertaining enough. I like the backing vocals the best. Production is pretty good. Just doesn’t really do it for me.

Those Meddling Kids- Another favorite of mine. This is very very good. Mix is great, the beat is inventive and very tasteful. You’ve got one of my favorite voices period. The guitar is excellently played and better than that a very tasteful line. This is a Keeper a Contender and maybe my Favorite.

Wages- Best Wages song to date! Why the Hell can’t you punch in “Catastrophe” over “Curmudgeon”? Neither are uniquely important to these lyrics. Guitar solo is really bad. The solo takes this down a couple notches. I was into the rhythm guitar. Melody needs less scooping and tightening up.

Zipline- My project this week. I apologize for the rough mix and the rough edits. I didn’t have as much time as I would’ve liked. I agree there needs to be more riffs, I think we beat these to death. I thought there was some good aspects though, and therefore I thought it best to share. I’m not sure what “tuneless” means concerning my solo. Maybe because it’s not a rehash of the “melody”. I liked the 3 over the 4 feel, and Sam and I were really playing off each other, I suppose more rhythmically than melodically.

So it’s a tough call between MC Frontalot featuring Brad Sucks, Paco Del Stinko, The Quesadilla Explosion, Those Meddling Kids, and Melvin.

Damn, I knew I shouldn't have hit both the muddy AND the inaudible button on the final mix down, lol. But you're right, I have a bad habit of sinking my vocal a bit too deep when I'm mixing down. I think it's a psychological thing, kind of like when you hear your own voice recorded, it sounds weird. So I keep pushing it back. On my professionally recorded stuff, my vocals are way up front because I didn't mix them. Thank you for the comments styl.

Yeah, I agree that Charlie's leads put this song on the map. He seemed to know just what I was looking for with only a couple emails.
I'm not sure what you mean by a squishiness. Maybe you can elaborate so I can try to avoid it next time.
As far as the bass, I had a few people say it was too loud on the wedding song, so I cranked it down in the mix. Sounds like I need to get it between last weeks entry and this weeks. Thanks Glennny

i had some time.

BLT-song rocks. solo is amazing. i liked your voice better last week. melody is cool. i like the fact that there are some changes in this song though. the drums sound a little like dance punk....if thats even a style? i like the song a lot.

CS&thePC-interesting use of weird noises. its okay.

gigavolt sound machine-the synth hurts my teeth. i like how the song is put together. i love the casio synth.
i dont like the vocal effect. its too heavy IMO. although more lyrics would have been more my taste.
good song.

Jj and his T.v. set- it sounds kinda like a jam session when you find a riff that you really like so you play it way too long and make up words as you go..and afterwords you say " that would make an awesome song ".
but once you start writing it for real it doesnt hold the same appeal as it did when you were jamming. i like the idea, its not really to my taste though. i dont think the falsetto on " catastrophy " works as a lead vocal, but would sound much better as a backup. good effort.

klownhole featuring everyone-wages sounds a little like the strokes in this. i guess thats good. the music is once again classic klownhole rock. its much too long. great teamwork.

luke henley-great whisting intro. shock value present...man you have a lot of talent, i love your voice and style of music...but i really think its all wasted on lyrics that nobody who’s address is Outside of a maximum security prison could possibly relate to. its just shock value and that is boring to me.

mc frontalot&brad sucks- its cool. its pretty tight. my favorite part is the chorus. i would have liked less time between raps and chorus to break it up a bit, but i really dont know if that would have worked. you guys did a great job.

melvin-WOW!! i think this is my favorite song of yours in a while. all of your songs are good, but im really diggin this one. so far this is the front runner. vote?? awesome song!! keeper!

ninja bachelors- i like the style, and the lyrics are really great when taken in the proper perspective.
great song .

octothorpe-kinda sounds like “ stand in the place where you live” musically. slack solo. i like the drums. i think the vox could flow a little better.

our dog- i thought the intro was awesome. has someone already mentioned elmo? haha...i think its funny tho. the only thing is the volume raises and falls for some reason. the music is really good but, i think its worth keeping for the funny factor. good song

paco- i like it. i dont have any advice or anything. the song is solid. the vox are different than im used to from you and i like it. it all sounds great though. this song is the total package.

queso-dillas- i missed you guys. i love the music, the bass is awesome. tight garage band funk rock.

Several thous$in motion-you have a great vioce, however....it sounds like you are holding back a lot. like when you dont want to wake someone up. i like it despite that tho. great job. i dont know if you are new or not, but i hope you keep submitting.

shambles/mc heapy- i dont really like the style but thats just me. otherwise the music and vox fit well together and everything is pretty solid.

those meddling kids- I REALLY LOVE this song!! its very 80’s teen movie. awesome song. contender for sure.

wages- i like how you made it more full sounding. rythem guitar is great, the solo could use some work, but all in all i like this song a lot. you keep stepping it up each time.

zipline-great music. i like the vox too. i think you must stand up to record them because it sounds like you are looking away and up while you record at times. it doesnt sound bad it just makes the volume on the vox all over the place. nice job all in all.

a lot of great songs in this fight but
i think my favorites are Melvin, Paco del stinko, those meddling kids, the quesodillas.

Melvin: The verses are definitely the bits that do it for me here; obviously I like my jangly guitars but I like that it's simple and sweet. There feels like more space to add stuff and that other guitar in the background works well. The chorus is a good tune but as it rocks out more I feel like the tempo starts to hold it back too much so it feels ploddy and lacking in dynamics, places like this are exactly the points where I'd love to hear you do some angular stop-starts/tempo change/key change/or something totally random and winding and/or complicated.

Zipline: I'm digging this quite a bit, but at the same time I feel frustrated that the format of songfight doesn't allow you to spend longer on this song. I like the lo-fi-ness to an extent but in places it really does hold this song back and I'm not talking about the singing which is pretty cool. I think it's partly the stop-start bits; I like them but in order for them to work best they need to be tighter, and that could probably be said of most of the song. So I would love to see you do this live after you'd practiced it a bit, and cut that mid-solo by about 70%. good stuff.

#: Hmm, you woulda thought after 80+ songs you'd have learnt to play instruments and sing. the chord pattern is generic and boring; I can take some clipping but there's too much here, that's not a big thing especially as this sounds like a live recording. The lyrics are amusing in places but they don't scan too well and the structure is pretty infantile. vote!, nah not really but sounds like you had fun so who gives a rats ass about votes.

Gigavolt Sound Machine: Ah, sounds like you're not too comfortable with your vocals, no worries, the vocoder melody is okay. The elements here are all okay but not amazing and they aren't able to carry the tune for the duration. I mean, the drum pattern is cool but it doesn't develop, and the synth isn't interesting enough to be repeated as much as it is, also one can hear too much of that patch, next time use a few nicely contrasting sounds and switch them around to try and get some more texture and dynamics. Nothing bad here though, nice try.

Chonchi Station unt das Power Converters: Electro mashup! yes, you should wash your hands. hang on, is this Damien Verrett? I heard a song creeping through the mess for a second there, and the bloops are starting to sound more whimsical rather than sinister. Okay, hope you don't mind but I'm skipping ahead to hear if anything else happens......ooh, it does, back we go.....ha, totally random change there, but a fun one. and there's a perfectly good song tacked on the end here. Okay, so not a total waste of time. Simulating randomness can be fun but not usually for the listener and I'd be interested to hear more of this if you got the Song/Wacky-Shit balance slightly more even and/or focused.

Ninja Bachelors: Bill Hicks fan are we? who isn't I guess. You sound familiar too, but I'm not sure since the vocal style doesn't sound natural. There's actually nothing wrong with this at all, it all flows nicely, no lines with too many syllables or dodgy chords. But then, there's nothing fantastic about it either like stirring lyrics or magic chords. It is what it is, well done.

Front: I think this is the first fight I've actually entered with thee and I don't think I was gonna win it anyway so I won't hate you this time. I really like the way the drums are cut with all the tiny gaps between the sounds making the beat sound all jerky but still with flow. Man, you put so much more effort into meter and words than I do, the lyrics fit the song like a glove, their not all totally inspired but I'm just picking holes now. Excellent. apart from the ending.

Several Thousand Dollars in Motion: good name (though I'm glad I'm not gonna have to say it too often). You win the "nicest sounding voice by virtue of being female" award this week. Though having said that I do really like the delivery as well, it makes me think of...well, let me just say this song would be perfect if I had a friend who lived exactly the right distance away for me to hear this on the journey there, or was fifteen minutes long. hmm, one more listen......shall I d/l this.....yeeaah go on then. thanks

Luke and his cheery song about incest and sodomy: Now I think about it this probably says the title to me more than the other songs cos it's so, um, you know. Anyway, what it lacks in subtlety it makes up in humability and very black humour. I like this, but it's not your best and you know it, the music will bore you after a week or two i think and the lyrics hold very little mystery, I'm not trying to advocate needlessly obscure but some of your imagery is really amazing and it's appears to be largely absent here.

Steamy Heapey and the Shambolic Squares (yes, you): Not digging the gay house. The vocals are a welcome remedy for the campness, and some lyrics worth listening to. This is actually fucking brilliant, I'm never gonna be able to review a song for yours without mentioning Phoenix Nights but that's why it is brilliant and I'm gonna assume unless you say otherwise that that is what inspired this. My favourite line is "for every Brian Eno there's a bloody Brian Ferry". If the vocals were clearer I'd go and play this to all my mates but as it is I think they'd miss the point. Maybe I missed the point and this is really crap, who knows?

Our Dog: Let's not beat about the bush, this is a totally rockin tune. Taking that into account I found this totally hilarious on first listen, but on repeat it needs more gravitas and that's where you need to be careful. You could just go for well done generic gruff rock vocals, but I think that would sap all the invention and edginess out of the track; what it needs is some dark gutteral screeching like either Frank Black or these guys http://www.myspace.com/letourenemiesbeware (listen to 'fools, philistines'). That's all you need to scare the crap out of people. yes.

Quesadilla Explosion: ooh, I dunno why I was expecting this to be more emo, this is way more jaunty and upbeat than I remember you guys being, it's cool though. D'you know Mock Orange? reminds me of them big time. This is excellently done. I like the tune, but don't lurve it, it i definitely one of the best here, if not the best. cool

Jimmy Jet: Sometimes you can get away with stuff like this on songfight, but in this fight in particular it feels like your trying to fight fire with rubber. It sounds like it's form the Chili's stable of funky indie and....well, you don't need me to tell you this is seriously missing some funky drumming. Anyway, I'm not a big fan (particularly of slap bass) but you sing and play okay.

Klownhole: Wages has always had an impressive set of vocal chords so it sounds good having a band behind him. Is that Jeff doing the uber-widdling? cool, but there's nothing I can say here that I've not said in other Klownhole reviews. Good collab though, I'd say you've all benefitted from each other's input. I didn't get all the way to the end of this.

...and, Wages: This is quite a good song, moderately well played. That guitar solo makes it feel a lot less well played but after that when the other guitar chords come in it's cool how it takes the song up a notch. You still sound unsure as to exactly what notes you're trying to sing, I know it's difficult to pin down a melody in only a week, I find it frustrating cos when you do it right it sounds really good.

Billy's Little Trip feat Paco: So, do you umm rock often? you do? good. I've never been a huge fan of the minor key (not sure how else to put that), classic rock stuff but that's just cos I like the Smiths so you needn't worry. This is very good, at points when I'm thinking it starts to suffer from sounding a bit generic it throws in a massive hook with crunchy guitars, and you can't argue with a massive hook. Squuuueeeeeeaaaaallllll.......bow-bowbowmeeedlymeedlymeedlymeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEE!!!!!! (I don't think me typing 'air guitar' in brackets would've conveyed what I was feeling properly). well done, you should get Leaf to drum for you on a track.

Paco: nice intro, but see what you've done here is shot yerself in the foot by making (or contributing to) 2 awesome songs and therefore dividing the total Paco vote which leaves it wide open for me to once again write the history books so that it looks like I was a better musician/songwriter than you, which (it could be argued) isn't necessarily true. Anyway, enough silliness, this is cool cos you've got 2 things: A) the funk, and B) the rock, and all without sounding even remotely like RHCP, for which I commend you. Even without the backing vox your voice lends a theatrical feel to the proceedings, it's pretty versatile which is cool. One thing that troubles me is that in spite of your considerable talent you never stray anywhere near my stylistic mood of choice - that being ethereal and twinkly - and as such I'm gonna vote for somebody else. I am a bastard.

lots of good stuff here. too many to pick my favourites, I'm gonna have a long hard think about who to vote for....

It's so weird having my voice as something to be enjoyed rather than tolerated. I'm very pleased that people like it more now, and that maybe all that practice has actually helped.

You're definitely taking something from this that I genuinely wasn't able to put into it myself and I thankyou for that, I don't want to say any more than that cos I may ruin the song but I love the concept of music being interactive and growing simply by being listened to. You've helped perpetuate that for me.
