jesus christ. i guess that explains why you had so much trouble catching the reference last week.
It's a joke Blue. It's exactly the same thing I said last week.

I have, no joke, been laughing hysterically at that monkey comment for five minutes. I seriously wished I had a retarded monkey to help me out.

that comment is even more spot on when you realize (notice the avatar) that mico saudad translates loosely to 'sad monkey'.

reviews to come after the LA songfight show...

My Reviews. A lot of great music this week.

Carpetburn - Nice clean intro, reminds me of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's nest" I love how it kicks in. The lyrics are really good. Tons of great guitar, which makes me love this song. Good job

c hack - I really like this one. Great melody, great f**king guitar sound, I love dirty/clean, I just don't use it enough. Fun lyrics. Good job

cranial biffida - I'm not sure if I've ever said this before, this is great Monster movie music.

cynthia size and the @eclectic spOOns - I really like the darkness of this one. You showed me how you record this stuff, but I'm still amazed at how well you arrange it. Good job.

Double Helix Bros - Interesting sounds in the mix towards the end. Trying new things I see. Is this all about hair loss?

Eddie Lance - Piano like last week. I guess you are a piano player. I like it. I see you like the pause thing. No lyrics or story this week? I like your piano playing, you're pretty good.

HipWreckd - I just realized, you are the guy that did the story about the tracker, with the banjo I think, right? Very cool! I like this. You seem to do dialog similar to an actor.

Hostess Mostess - I love this song. Very well performed. I've played this song numerous times this week. It is one of my favorite mellow songs this week. To point out anything wrong with this song would just be nit picky. This song really has all of the elements needed. Good job.

Jolly Roger - I really like this song, even though it sounds like I'm listening to it from what's leaking out of the guys headphones two tables over. But I know you're working on that, so as far as the song, it ROCKS! I like how you kick right in with a guitar riff. Drums match the song and vocal hit points nicely. Great drums, cool rhythm guitar. The lead guitar sounds like he's just randomly moving his fingers as fast as he can on the finger board and cross picking really fast, like he's playing air guitar. But other than that, this song rocks. Good job.

Klownhole - Calling occupants......again you guys had me laughing my ass off. Awesome jam. Such an intriguing topic...get it? I think I heard you almost break from character and laugh after one of your Gray Rainbows in the chorus, lol. You guys rock. Good job.

Lyricburgler - Cool Spoon cover. Sounds like one of those old Australian songs that the Monkey stole in the 60's and tried to pass off as their own. I like the monkey's and Davie Jones was dreeeemy, so this is great. Good job.

MC Eric B - Well, your getting better with your new keyboard. Johnny Cash would buy this from you if he were alive. You always have good lyrics.

mico saudad - I really like this song. The soft vocals give a cool presence. Kind of has a Violent Fems vibe, but unique on it's own. Good job.

No Ghost - Cool, acoustic guitars, interesting background sounds and arrangement. No chicken in the slow pot? Is that a crock pot, or just a made up word for this song? Great lyrics and very original. Good job.

Pipefist - Nice song, good lyrics, cool melody. The keys, guitar and vocals are great. Good job.

Queen Anthony's Lace - I've heard this voice before. This is that girl with the cute voice that usually just does guitar and voice, right? wait wait wait one dar garn minute...."and if you still really want to, I'll consider a golden shower??" LMAO!! Interesting story. I enjoyed this, good job.

signboy - Cool guitar sound,

Spinlock - Very nice piano. Awesome lyrics. well played and performed. One of my other favorite mellow songs this week. Good job.

Spinning Merkaba - This song is cool. Very NIN with the electronics driving this song, but still unique to it's self. Good job.

Steakhaus - This is my favorite hard rocking song this week. I hope the lyrics are posted. Ripping rhythm guitar and bass. Very cool distorted vocals. I love industrial metal. Good job.

Syd and Me - Ok, this song wins the cutest song ever made EVER! I just love knowing it's Dad and Daughter with uncle Steve on the horn. Great song you guys. Good job.

Thanks Glenny for the Frisbee - Cool guitar and uke, nice vocals as usual, good lyrics, good melody, well played and a cool arrangement. This is also one of my favorite mellow tunes this week. Good job you guys.

hi everybody. i'm gonna do some brief reviews but this is my first songfight and my first time hearing most of you guys, so i won't be able to review your songs in the context of other stuff you've done. so basically, take my reviews with a grain of salt.
in alphabetical order:
Billy's Little Trip: This is a tasty little BLT. I'm a lot more into the verses than the chorus part, which doesn't do much for me. This song is very well recorded and enjoyable. I'm impressed.
c hack: Could have been a 69 Love Songs outtake. I'm liking it a lot.
Carpetburn: I like the part where the drums come in. The guitar is very good. The vocals and lyrics are a touch too angsty and lugubrious for my taste, but the week's song title was definately pointing in that direction so I won't hold it against you.
Cranial Biffida: I couldn't get into this one, I just got bored.
Cynthia Size & the Electric SpOOns vs. Lyricburglar: Almost a draw, but the SpOOns win, i think. Love that retro/futuristic electro-freakout complete with vocoders and a seriously sinister synth bassline. Lyricburglar's tune is damn groovy though and is the most joyful song this week. It's cool how different the songs came out.
Double Helix Bros.: love some of those synths towards the end. i'm feeling pretty lukewarm about the song though. the concept/lyrics don't really do it for me.
Eddie Lance: Well i don't have much to say, but that's ok because apparently neither did you. Nice keyboards. You rocked.
Pipefist / Grey with vox: Um, same song right? I didn't enjoy this one until the chorus came in with that sweet piano. Did you stick the microphone under the lid of the piano? Because that's where it sounds like I am when i listen to this song... or maybe it's a synthesized piano with an effect on it, i can never tell these days. Very enjoyable song.
HipWreckd: Wow, this one's as impressively executed as it is bizarre. Plus the middle section is really funny. At first I wrote it off as sounding a little too much like Mens Recovery Project, but then I thought, hey, that's not such a bad thing to sound like. Good stuff.
Hostess Mostess: Really well-written song, even if the cheese-factor is a little high. And very nice vocals. You should be proud.
Jolly Roger: meh, not very interesting. But to be fair the breakdown is pretty damn tubular.
Klownhole: were you guys drunk when you made this? I like the klaatu reference even though it doesn't make any sense as far as i can tell. I even like the songfight self-referencing--"Gray Rainbow, such an intriguing topic" haha! The music just sounds like people jamming though, and it goes on for a long time. Made me laugh.
MC Eric B: i'm guessing you're not eric b of eric b & rakim fame. it's hard for me to know what to make of this song. the extra-cheesy keyboards and half-groaned vocals let me know that this song isn't trying to take itself too seriously. but then, the lyrics don't seem to be trying to be funny, unless mixed metaphors in and of themselves are your idea of a good chuckle. in short, i have no idea why i think this song is awesome.
Mico Saudad: tight and well done. cool song.
No Ghost: some pretty good devendra banhart-y folk. the song never quite takes me to the creepy swamp that it speaks of... maybe you could throw some of dr. john's gris-gris gumbo into the slow pot?
Queen Anthony's Lace: yay it's me! this song blows, i hate the vocals. i've had my vocal chords reconstructed time and again by 18 of the most distinguished surgeon's in hollywood, and this is still the closest they can get me to diana ross. fuckin' quacks!
Signboy: um, didn't get into this one at all. wish i could have, but i just couldn't. sorry.
Spinlock: I really wanted to like this one but I ended up feeling lukewarm about it. I voted for your "tw3rp" a couple weeks ago, though, and i think it should have won. I look forward to more songs from you.
Spinning Merkaba: can't tell if the lyrics are meant to be funny or not. kinda comes off like a NIN parody.
Steakhaus: ok, those garbled vocals are so irritating. I mean sure, everybody likes to sing into an effects pedal every now and then and make goofy noise, but it's really no fun to listen to somebody else do it.
Syd & Me: This song is cute as can be. Sounds like something Lee Hazlewood might have recorded in his prime. Love the trumpet. Best song of the week.
Thanks Glenny for the Frisbee: very pretty, but doesn't really excite me in any way. although this song is not my favorite of the week, i would not be surprised or disappointed if it won the most votes.

Did i forget anyone? I realize that i was very brief and sometimes vague with a lot of these songs, but if you want more in depth comments from me just "ask me I won't say no, how could i?"
great songs everybody.

All this means is that you are reviewing with no bias. That's a good thing. Also, thanks for the comments. And yeah, Grey With Vox was us too. There was a mixup with two of us submitting the song, one likely incorrectly, without a band name or even the title of the song. But I righted it! Anyway, as far as the piano, I don't know if it's synth or not, as I'm not responsible for that part, but I can guarantee that it was not played by any of us. It might be sampled.

Yeah, the bass wasn't synthesized either, that was me playing... which must be why it's out of tune!

I need to get the neck fixed, it's bowed like no-one's business. It sucks because it's such a lovely bass.

Yes. We were drunk.

Since Klaatu didn't make sense, any references to them cannot be expected to make sense. QED.

It wasn't just people jamming. There was also people drinking. Musically though, it was a jam captured on "tape" and submitted without cleanup.

It also made us laugh.

Billy's Little Trip: Yay! Billy very trippy late 60's, second the Pink Floyd(ish) comments, if the vocals were a touch more up front this would have a harder edge and would maybe detract from the ethereal quality, there are some nice lyrical lines in here, but (and I'm gonna contradict myself here!) because the vocals are set back a little it's at times a little hard to decipher your usually clear vocal conviction. but a bloody good song nonetheless 8/10

Carpetburn: Okay I'm a little biased here, I've spent the last two days familiarising myself with Carpetburn's back catalogue, and absolutely adore this, mainly because vocally and lyrically this is just so damned carpetburn-alicious, honesly pete and the boys really do have a unique sound, and after seeing them live I have to say they make it effortless " I look in the eyes of strangers and they always look back in mine as if there's something wrong" pretty much sums up the earnest sadness counterpointed by that georgeous jangly backdrop. Also once again Pete you are vocally honest, you never try to mask your failings but instead embrace them which gives you top marks in my book. (p.s. nice 'fool's gold' reference!) 9/10

Chack: Meandering Dylanesque style with strangely oblique lyrics, sorry but to me the whole Gray Rainbow link seems a little tenuous, s'probably just me but I can't quite get it. 6/10

Cranial Biffida: I like the Sci-Fi/Horror flick style soundtrack and when the track starts proper this is just so 'Cranes' though this really does suffer from it's length, it's a bloody good track though 7/10

Double Helix Bros.: There's quite a lot going on here, and those (synth pads/drums/handclaps?) sound as if they were mixed seperately from the rest of the track, the guitar line doesn't really fit the vocal line either, though that's definately Wages singing, I actually like the component parts of this track but it just seems a bit disjointed for me. sorry guys. 6/10

Eddie Lance: Nice piano dude, nice tune, this has a it's just been raining and I'm sitting all alone in my beach house thinking about you (insert girl/guy you miss) feel about it, so I do get the 'Gray Rainbow' vibe!
Nice work. 7/10

Gray with Vox: Just a bit wailing-ish for my tastes, sounds as if it should be a lot sadder than it is, but there's just a bit too much uptempo jingle jangle to make it work for me. 6/10

Hipwreck'd: An ode to buried turtles is a odd way to start a track, this is goofrock, taking a stab at WreckdoM going hiphoppy! (probably so wide of the mark it's embarrasing), yeah it's fun to listen to once maybe twice, but doesn't have that "I'm going to be enjoying this for a while to come" feel about it. 6/10

Hostess Mostess: Pretty song, and nice vocals, though I'd say apart from the underlying guitar work this just doesn't grab me, and does become a little repetative lyrically, the falsetto is rather nice though, and I like the way the backing "way" seems to go on forever, nice work, just not grabbing as much as maybe it should. 7/10

Jolly Roger: Nice snotty/punky feel, though after the first 4 bars, this should have gone through the roof volume wise, nice intro then bang, sounds a little within itslf for it's genre, kind of like 'Green Day' without the edge. 6/10

Klownhole: Whoah! chaotic intro-madness! must be Klownhole, you know this has an extremely drunk feel to it, it's sloppy but in a weird and rather annoyingly good way, I wouldn't listen to this many more times, but I'll be fascinated by it each time I do...somewhere between 5 and 8/10. (Go Jason, Trouser Shoes????)

Lyric Burgler: Brilliant! 8/10 (I don't know who you guys are, but thanks a million times over!)

Cynthia Size and the @eclectic spOOns: I'm quite pleased with this, s'not too layered (something I always overdo), Cynthia has her moments here as well, generally an above average spOOns track. somewhere between 6 and 7/10.

MC Eric B: Sounds like 'Scooter' from the Muppet Show! quite a 2 dimensional backing track, apart from when the crazy wurlitzer-style organ pop's it's infectious head into the mix, 'part from that I have to say I don't like it. sorry dude. 5/10

Mico Saudad: Very simple idea, works extremely well, though the vocals are too loud, which is a bit annoying (I know we shouldn't judge songs based on that criteria), the really annoying bit is where the harmonies come in, it just drowns everything else out (sounds bloody marvellous just too loud). 7/10

No Ghost: This has a strange folk/blues feel that I'm not all together comfortable with, can't quite explain what's annoying me about it, but whatever it is, I really don't like it, the whole thing just sounds a bit evil! (and I may be wrong but I don't think that's what you were trying to achieve) but honestly dude, I'm not knocking it, It's just not my thing! 6/10

Pipefist: Nice friendly style, easy on the ear, maybe a touch more emotion in the vocals would have nudged it a bit further in the right direction, there's some nice lyrical moments which you should rightly be proud of,. 7/10

Queen Anthony's Lace: Hmm! makes me smile in a this is very sub-shirelles-esque kind of way, as long as this doesn't go on too long this is rather infectious in a sickly sweet kind of way. maybe 45 seconds too long, but nice interesting effort. 7/10

Signboy: Well played, well sung, well constructed, but nothing to really latch onto, no definative hook, leaves me a touch cold guys, sorry. 6/10

Spinlock: Beautiful and evocative track, 'watch like an absess how industry grows' (I think the line goes) very very intelligent lyrics and an excellent take on the title, I'm liking this quite a lot. 8/10

Spinning Merkaba: Marvellous track! 8/10.

Steakhaus: Ooh No it's Lawmower Death! or one of those other thrash metal peoples! (actually this is rather good, though I have no idea what else to say about it!) 8/10

Syd and Me: Cute! 8/10

Thanks Glennny for all them Frisbee's: WOW! you guys just get better and better! lyrically perfect, vocally nailed it, emotionally stirring, musically emotive, this is one heck of a good track, not least because of it's frisbee-ness, I'd say Glenny has added that extra dimension that you guys were lacking (though you were always one of my songfight favourites!). great great song! I look forward to this coming round on my player any time soon. 9/10

Okay two horse fight between in the Red corner 'Carpetburn' and in the Blue corner 'Thanks Glenny for the Frisbee' nice work guys!

Ultimately, this is how I felt. I didn't know how to change it and keep the lyrics that I had with the amount of time available. I had already re-written the lyrics twice and a lot of changes went into the guitar and vocals also. I definitely think the guitar should have been changed to meld with the synth more, or the other way 'round.

 Though, I'm beginning to wonder if I'm trying too hard. My next entry (tentatively titled 'King Me') will likely be stripped back from that approach a bit, but hopefully with insight gained. We'll see how it goes...

nah, this fight already has more reviews than "if i were italian", not including the guy that said it was the worst fight he'd ever heard and didn't review anything. although the few people that did review were very helpful.

some reviews.

Billy's Little Trip
Great mix. Bass could be a smidge bigger, imo. Love the wet drum sounds. I want the vox in the chorus to punch the resolve home in my face...not quite...but it's a great change. This is a pretty awesome track man. Of the BLT I've heard, it's the best marriage of style/production to your vocals. Keeper, possible vote. Oh no! Where's the middle section? This song NEEDS a bridge. Nice ending.

Carpetburn
I'm totally, totally sucked into the intro. Right on. The vox have the strain of Waters, and I happen to love that. I'm really into the lyrics...this is a great track! Bass could be fuller, it's hard to pick out at times. Definitely a keeper. Another possible vote. Damn!

CHack
I like the feel you've nailed here. Good tune. I'd like to hear the full band treatment. Not much to critique...it's simple and catchy.

Cranial Biffida
Personally, samply sounding clips lose my interest really fast. I LOVE the monster guitar hits. But they're so huge they kill the drums energy. Hairsplitting. I'm having a hard time grabbing the words out of the vox. Those huge guitars. Love 'em...but they take up a lot of space. Love the superheavy ending bits..6:3oish...

Cynthia Size/Eclectic Spoons
I find the vox are disconnected from the music tonally, at times...also not a fan of vocoding. Big bass is nice. The mix has me searching for kick drum definition, but otherwise it's alright. This is cool..just not up my alley.

Double Helix Bros
I'm sorry, this sounds like you mixed tracks from a few different songs at points. Got me smiling. Hard to focus in here. The vocals are really selling a melody that doesn't seem to ...fit. I probably just don't get it. I like the squelchy synth toward the end. But that's about it.

Spinning Merkada gets my vote, although I really wanted to vote for Eddy's piano. Wow, was that nice! probably the best work I heard here this week. Some of you guys have definitely got some chemistry brewing here, and I hope I am here to hear it( and you too, or else I probly won't hear it...)

Thanks Hip. I'm playing around with some new song layouts to keep from getting stagnant. For some reason my brain can't think past my guitar when it comes to a bridge. I'm trying to mix it up a bit to see how people receive them. I'm a firm believer in the belief that there are many ways to do the same thing right.
Wuna hear something funny? After I finished this song and had a chance to hear it with fresh ears, I wished Frankie Big Face did the chorus. He would have nailed it and brought it home.
c hack wrote: billy's little trip: no real complaints about this, but it's just not really grabbing me.
Yeah, it wasn't a real grabby song and I couldn't muster up a hook for the life of me on this one. Any suggestions?

Thanks Queen. I'm glad it was enjoyable for you. But I must say, anyone that is willing to give a dying man his final wish of a golden shower and sit around and smoke pot all day, can't be all that bad.

Bloody good? Woo Hoo! I like my lyrics to be hard to decipher. How boring would the Rubik's cube have been if you got the colors to match up on the first try? Thanks spoon.

edit: oh damn, that Rubik's cube reference is good. I hope you guys are writing this shit down.
