Re: Chock full of calcium (Bag of Bones reviews)
Some drive-through reviews, since I'm about to be eliminated from Nur Ein. I need something to do, afterall. What a huge fight.
Overall, you should all be ashamed. Garage Band has ruined Song Fight as we know it. Nah, just kidding.
BSS - How'd you have time to... oh because you have more than one person. Not fond of this singer, and the guitar riffage is a little boring. Ok, later listens has revealed this to be pretty nice.
BLT - Guitar tone's getting there... Guitar riff is kickass. The mixing is a little harsh. The keyboard is interesting but could be a little more sparse - it's kind of distracting.
Paul Weichel - Instrumental... pretty interesting, but it's titled "Bunny" so it's probably not "Bag of Bones". Doesn't sound like "Bag of Bones".
Daring Front - I /know/ you have better drums than this, so you must have purposefully picked these. Synth accompaniment is good. You know you have a great voice and probably belong on Glee. Chorus is doing nothing for me.
Barton Lewis - Ah you are a campy funny little guy. The recording quality is pretty much on par with some White Stripes, which isn't all that bad at all. Capture the atmosphere pretty well actually.
EGG - I think you were inspired by Alice in Chains' "Them Bones". The mixing has a long way to go, the vocals are nice (if a little repetitive), and the drums are quietly disinteresting. Slow and slithers along, I think you can do better with that talent!
Equals X - Aww man a nerd rapper. I just can't get into white boy rap. Some of the synthing is pretty good.
Fitzroy - Hey some live drums. Live everything? Not bad. I don't like screaming, but you're screaming on key so... not too bad. A little jammy, but not bad at all.
Frolicking Swamp Sparkles - What kind of name is that? Nice voice. Boring accompaniment. The keyboard makes it a little more interesting, but it all feels kind of thrown together. Those drums at 1:20 don't match all that well, but they're more interesting. If you could keep time this would be 100% better. 4 minutes of this is too long, sorry.
Hey Its Romer - You have my attention, sir. I love this. This is fucking kickass techno. I don't know how hard you actually worked at this... but it is quite good. I wish it went some more places, and I am not fond of the clap sample, but it's still good.
Hoglen & Wages - Some things never changes. It's decently listenable, but in 10 minutes I probably won't be able to tell the difference between 10 other Wages songs.
Jast - Is that a filter or are you singing with marbles in your mouth? This screams Depechemode. The drums could be less synthy/spastic and more relaxed, driving. The drums are the biggest problem I have, because you've got some inspired programming in them but you're hiding them in the mix and they're kind of crappy samples. Overall that's the feeling I get from the whole song: self-conscious spazzing. Relax a little and ride in like a pimp! The bridge break down is my favorite part.
Jonathan Mann - IM BORED - START THE SONG. Ok, this is pretty interesting. The percussion has hooked me. And the rest isn't bad, either. The chorus is kind of... really? You're going to repeat this awkward title like that? Ah well, it doesn't drive me away. Short and sweet. Nice job. Is Nick the girl, cause he sounds pretty hot?
Jon Eric - Is this Unholy Alliance? JUST KIDDING. If hitting the wrong piano notes is on purpose, I dig that. If it's more of a lazy thing, I don't dig that. I think you should try singing this an ocatave lower, or even doubling it an octave lower - let the lower vocal carry it, since you're straining a lot here, and let the high vocal just augment. The horn is pretty cool. Also try switching up your standard drum beat.
King Arthur - Kudos for the swing and cool riffage. Vocals are pretty good, but that last 10% is key to pulling this off.
Brooke - So we meet again. You sound cute. Good job with the creative, simplistic percussion. The verse is kind of... plodding. The chorus is much more interesting and when you hold out your voice, it's so nice. You'd gain a lot by doing this in stereo and double tracking some stuff.
Mantzfield - There is a lot of off key singing and poor synthetic drumming here. I hear a lot of potential, particularly when the chorus comes. Alright, this death metal is not my thing, but it's kind of funny how you did that. Nice guitar triplets. Ok, I've lost interest at this point. Goodbye!
Night Elf Mohawk - Wrong competition. The no instruments rule was over at Nur Ein round 6. Good god, I can hear you're trying to be kind of funny, but I can't tolerate much more. What just happened. I don't even. You get the WTFLOL award.
Noah - The chord progression is kind of cliche (lol when don't I say that to you?) - mostly because I have to listen to it between your sparse vocal lines. Try changing up your vocal melody strategy for something different. The fake drum programming has gotten a ton better than I remember.
Barton Lewis - WHY DO YOU HAVE TWO SONGS? I liked the first one better, but this is quaint and jokey too.
Toshiro - David Bowie has graced us with his presence. We could be heroes!! Just for one day!! Nice bass work. I like the chorus. Everything feels familiar, yet distinct. Your vocals and mixing could use a little work and I'd perhaps double track the chorus. I can do without the yelling, but I can respect it as well.
Young Stroke - Yes, Huckleberry is back laying a phat track for us! I may joke, but I like your accent rapping - I think it adds a certain distinction. You do a good job building atmosphere and making the listener want to dance. The verse flow leaves a bit to be desired, and I think you may have tried a little too hard with the chorus - if you lay it back a little more, like a rapper, instead of a Euro dance track, it would be more enjoyable IMO. The production is pretty good - could use some more layering during the verse, maybe a little eq or verb or somesuch.

Sure, be mean. Even though I totally don't deserve it.Manhattan Glutton wrote:Jast - Is that a filter or are you singing with marbles in your mouth?
(Side note: I noticed just yesterday that I totally messed up the stereo recording of the vocals. I hadn't actually panned the mics left and right; I'd turned the wrong knobs. Therefore the two tracks are just layered on top of each other. Facepalm.)
They're actually pretty good samples but heavily gated and (in some parts) distorted. It's all part of The Plan(tm). Drums being hidden in the mix is just me sucking at mixing. The drums could be less synthy/spastic and more relaxed, driving. The drums are the biggest problem I have, because you've got some inspired programming in them but you're hiding them in the mix and they're kind of crappy samples.
I guess that's the price for doing weird experiments.Overall that's the feeling I get from the whole song: self-conscious spazzing.

To be more accurate and fair: it sounds like you EQ'd out the presence, perhaps for fear of sibilants. An EQ bump would probably fix it.jast wrote:Sure, be mean. Even though I totally don't deserve it.
They just kind of remind me of cheesy samples, particularly the snare. They could be totally legitimate and just the snare itself sounds cheesy. In My Opinion. They're actually pretty good samples but heavily gated and (in some parts) distorted. It's all part of The Plan(tm).

Nah, the mics just suck. My initial version had a single mic, a different one, but when I rerecorded the vocals, for some reason I decided to try the stereo thing. Ah well, part of the big learning experience.Manhattan Glutton wrote:To be more accurate and fair: it sounds like you EQ'd out the presence, perhaps for fear of sibilants.

No keyboard, that's Glennny using his e-bow. Yeah, I noticed you like those muddy guitar tones. I actually do too when I'm playing in front of my cabs. Not sure why I mix the guitar so thin. It's odd that I do that, because I like a wall of guitars in my face. It has something to do with how I hear it with the drums, bass and vox. I tend to fade it into the background more.Manhattan Glutton wrote: BLT - Guitar tone's getting there... Guitar riff is kickass. The mixing is a little harsh. I think on my next song, I'm going to go all Steve Albini on it and push the guitars up and push the vox back. Maybe dial back the mids a tad with the multi band on the master. We shall see.

Maybe I have no taste. I like to think I make just enough room for the drums and bass to poke through. Like the guitar is a cotton candy cloud that the rest of the song hangs on and sticks its legs out of. But in your songs, the guitar isn't a cloud and the bass is just a creepy guy standing there naked with his trenchcoat wide open. Sure, his dong may be interesting, but the pants lying on the floor are also interesting and I can't hear them.Billy's Little Trip wrote:It has something to do with how I hear it with the drums, bass and vox.

@Manhattan Glutton
Thanks! I put a pretty decent amount of time into this, a lot of it was messing around with the midi controller (first time use) and figuring out how to get fl studio to do what I want it to, I definitely plan on cleaning this up when I get a little bit of free time!

The vocals weren't live, however, we recorded them through the an amp to give them the same shitty sound. The other half of fitzroy, played guitar, while i played drums, and we recorded him singing/yelling after. "A little jammy" is putting it lightly, as there was no "written" part except for the words. We just went...for about 3 mins and stopped. I had some words I wrote, that I had shown him, and after making sure it didn't sound ear-bleedingly horrible, he sang my words over it. After like 5 tries he got a vocal track. He wasn't happy with it, I said it had pops all over the place, but it was good enough. Thank you for the kind review, and I think only a few people around here really like screaming vocals.Manhattan Glutton wrote: Fitzroy - Hey some live drums. Live everything? Not bad. Re: Chock full of calcium (Bag of Bones reviews)
Some thoughts on this month's fight:
Duderonymus Bosch: Nice intro. Good story, and I appreciate the emotion and dynamics in your vocals. Sound effects are appropriate. Needs something else...
John Eric: This has the bones of a good song. Vox and drums are buried. Good expresion/dynamics with your voice -- you can belt it out -- just too low in the mix. Too bad you don't have horn/strings in there for counter melody.
Daring Front: OK, stop smoking cigarettes and/or get into aerobic workouts; there's not enough air in the otherwise good vocals. Everything sounds tight. I like the keys & drums -- sometimes the bass disappears on the downbeat, or maybe it's too low for my M-Audio 'personal' (small/cheap) deck monitors. Good song.
The Frolicking Swamp : Nice feel. Keys seem out-of-place timbre-wise. Having one dark (no high freqs) instrument with everthing else being bright and live sounding makes it kinda weird to me. Long echo and timing issues = big distraction. I like your voice, though.
Crack Hole: This song makes me
B S Scene: Sounds like a wasted David Bowie fronting The Who circa 1970. Nothing really stands out... good or bad. I do acknowledge, if not totally appreciate, the period (EQ/comp) feel to the music.
lalabrookie: Cool harmonies. Nice guitar. I think yor voice sounds authentic -- whatever that means. Good lyric.
That Guy: I like the intro -- except that drum beat screws up the initial feel. It works better for the rest, but it's too low in the mix. Srings/organ are good. Vocals don't cut it. Breakdown doesn't work. Out noise rules.
Hey it's Romer: Once it gets going, it's cool. I find myself expecting some nerdcore vocal any second. Gets boring and then more interesting with return to breakbeat. Too little going on to hold my interest. Bah
Johnathan Man +: Good job capturing and mixing instruments. Sounds too laid back to me -- like some competent but stoned musicians sitting around a basement playing a song too slowly. Weird.
Noah M: Good voice. That kick is driving me nuts. Good melody/sounds, but the OD guitar is a little too distorted, IMHO, and too far to the side. Minor quibble. Yeah, I know it's a redundant phrase, but I'm not going to just write "Quibble."
King Arthur: My favorite thing about this song is the short hand-muted guitar notes/chords that the lead guitar does during the verse. And, of course, everything else is in it's place. On a different note, I wonder if you ever use controlled feedback when playing guitar and recording?
Night Elf Mohawk: General MIDI Implementation. Totally. Then it gets interesting. Then it gets silly. Where did that fishy go? Is it in the cupboard?
Equals X: Little touches here and there add interest. The main keys sound too cheap. A more realistic -- or real -- instrument would be da bomb. Not bad -- not super.
More later.

More later.

Re: Chock full of calcium (Bag of Bones reviews)
Thanks BLT. I had fun and I really like the song. I hope you and Glenny aren't offended. It's about as far as I can get without more dry tracks.

If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

Re: Chock full of calcium (Bag of Bones reviews)
i've been working up the courage to participate. since it's been a few days without a new title, i decided to give my reviews to this past fight and vote.
i plan to be as honest as possible. i hope you all will return the favor and give it to me straight when i can enter my own tracks.
berkeley social scene
i like the start of it. the playing is kind of sloppy. the vocals are super indie. even beyond indie into hammy. but i like that here. solo at 2:40 is sweet.
billys little trip
cool sounds, nice riffage.
chorus a little too out of tune to do your own backing vocals. this is one instance where a little autotune could help you out.
crackhole
wonderful. like a wacky take on a ratatat original.
daring front
college indie faux yacht rnb. not really digging it. need to really work on your falsetto. or abandon it altogether. thanks for not dragging it out too long.
duderonymus bosch
more funny for you than for me.
eggnog adam
not much to get into here. one prolonged thought.

why bother?

now we're talking. oh oops, no. what happened? you are not papa roach, nor should you wish to be. and then random noodling into fade out.
frolicking swamp sparklies
kinda cool. if james taylor had developed a bad crack habit, recovered, moved into a halfway home, and listened to a bunch of daniel johnston tapes. 1:25 what is this? the beat has its shoelaces tied together. cool idea, but it's getting hard to endure. 4:05 oh, there's a payoff?! very nice touch. good job. gold star.
hey it's romer
dubstep much? not bad. 2:00 stop ejaculating. 2:45 thanks, that's better.
hoglen + wages
if my house burned down i would not regret losing this tape.
jan krueger
is this really going to go on for 5 minutes? 1:20 thank you, next.
jonathan mann + young nick krill
sweet bass tones. great song. great voices. nice accordion? probably my winner.

scraping the turd residue off of they might be giants' bathroom tile. still, there is something redeeming here, i just don't like the song, the performance, or the recording.
king arthur
this begs for a video. shot on vhs-c cameras from about '94. various degrees of overweight people going in and out of strip mall stores in really bright sunlight. 1:10 oh i totally called it! the cell phone shack! wait, jerry's dead? jerry garcia? arthur, you play your instruments well. your voice is not the best but you know how to use it.
lala brookie
ugghhh! not only should this song be called "i can't afford you", but the token bag of bones lines is totally botched! i like the crappy knee slaps toward the end.

i'm sorry the doctor is ill; we will have to reschedule your appointment.
night elf mohawk
wonky samples and ominous beat. i can get down with that. oh no. don't david byrne it. please don't byrne it. ok i guess my fears were misguided. i should have been afraid of just general annoyance. still, looking forward to more stuff from you, i like your mentality.
noah mclaughlin
grandma please make it stop.

1:00 this song is really coming along nicely. it's a keeper. not a winner, but an honorable mention. i also want to hear more of what that guy has to offer.

not sure how i feel about this.

That you draw my cardiovascular health under the lens of suspicion is an act of shear effrontery. This song is merely below my competent range. I wrote of this in an earlier post, in so many words. Also very few takes for time's sake.Stubby Phillips wrote:Daring Front: OK, stop smoking cigarettes and/or get into aerobic workouts; there's not enough air in the otherwise good vocals.
Thank you for the kind and honorable review. You are a gentleman of distinguished measure. Try some mixing headphones.

I don't believe in autotune. I'd rather just stop harmonizing with myself before I sink to such crap.publicporking wrote:billys little trip

.....anyone want to start backing me up?
Thanks, pub.
