Yeah, well, after the direction the prefight thread went, what else could I do? I probably should have changed where it says "Enzyte" to say "Songfight," but... woulda, coulda, shoulda...

This is the other track I did, but I ended up working with another band more than 'just a producer' as I planned, so I decided not to submit this. I thought I'd share it here though, because I like how it turned out (mostly.)

synfonyc - I'm not a bob dylan fan. So I can't really judge this honestly.

Jeffrey Davis - Okay, I didn't think this was particularly good, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. Good job. I think.

The Flight and the Grand Design - There's something a little odd with the eq and dynamics, it just felt really pressed somehow. But, that didn't stop this from being really good. Maybe bring up the guitar a tad and bring down the snare a tad.

Daring Front - Awesome. Good job with the vocals. There's a little high end artifacting, but I think that's from the mp3 compression. There seems to be a bit of overlap with the epiano and vocals, maybe notch down the eq a bit on one of them (likely the epiano).

Mind Map That - Thank you. This is not the kind of thing I expect to hear here. My only criticism would be that the trianglish shaker drums get a bit grating. And perhaps I would gone with a slightly different reverb on the vocals, but that's a minute preference.

Billy and the Psychotics - I won't lie, I looked forward to this because I liked your prior entries. I'm partially dissapointed that it's the same style, but I'm also happy because your good at it. I'm still a fan and this is something I'd put in my iTunes library.

Anomaly Jonez - Solid vocals, but there's something really weird sounding about the EQ/recording, which is a real shame. The vocals distract from the music, which seems well produced, but it's hard to really tell with the vocals the way they are. It sounds a tad thin, except the bass.

Styop quoons - the high hat sound was so grating it made me want to turn the song off. Otherwise, it was alright.

Yyarrell Brothers Band - wow, much louder than the other tracks, but not overcompressed sounding in a bad way. Good job! Well produced sound overall.

Notorious FAP - This should be right up my ally, but perhaps this is a little too 'old school' for my tastes. But I think you got the style done well vocally, if you were going for the cheesy 90s rap sound (sorry if you weren't haha). I didn't like the chorus at all though. Strange ending, and I appreciate that.

EggNogAdam - Vocals are too loud for my tastes, but well done. I dig the whole track and the lyrical flow.

MC Who Izzy - Well, these vocals are way too low. And song doesn't hold up by itself, it's too repetitive.

deetak - Good job! I wanted to hear drums come in, but I got violin. That works too. I would still like drums to come in later on though. Or another surprising instrument.

The National Frontbottom - Great job. I would have gone for a different effect on the main vocals, but it works. Fun use of sound too.

Paco Del Stinko - Another entry I was looking forward to! I preferred the sound of your last entry a bit more, but I definitely dig this one too. I LOVE the bass sound. The whole track is mixed great.

sep - within the first few seconds, I figured out this was either going to be a really cool track, or... well, not. Sadly, I felt it was the latter.

ebola-cide - there's an odd bass resonance to the kick, not sure if I like it or not. Definitely overcompressed and the vox are too boomy. The violinish sound isn't happy. You should kill it. But I dig the guitar.

Juliet's Happy Dagger - Nathaniel's happy ears! Good bass sound, along with everything else. I can hear a little filtering from the mp3, but it still sounds good in the highs mostly. I dig the vocals and guitar. Also, I should embed my logo into my mp3s, not sure why I never thought to do that.

Torrentz - It seems rap is one of those genres that I often hear very badly produced, sort of a modern punk garageband sound, but thankfully I don't hear that here. And a good chorus! I felt the overall eq and compression could use a little work, but still, good job.

hillbilly - wow, that's a LOT of hiss. And some strange panning.

bgm - Well produced, performed, and sung. The only complain I have is the drum panning, which started off fine, but got annoying by the chorus. Still, that didn't stop this from being great. I like the theremin sound too.

Odoriferous Vally - I like the mix, but I feel the overal mastering could use a bit of polish. The vocals are a little off for my tastes at times, but that kind of works here. I like the guitar work a lot, maybe bring the guitars up a tad. Good bass too (how many times have I said that this fight?).

Hostess Mostess - This is a really cool track, I wish it had a better mix though. Hell, send it to me, I'll remix it if you want! If I liked the mix more, I'd say this one was the best song I think. I'm serious about sending it to me btw. Great job.

King Ginger - I'm not a fan of the vocal effect at all. I can understand what you're saying, but that sort of things happens sometimes. I like synth sound, but the drums get repetitive, as does the piano.

Berkeley Social Scene - I think i just like bass, but here's yet another bass sound that cuts through well. Unfortunately, I hear lots of clipping with the guitar that's distracting. The whole thing feels harsh. If I have to pick between dull and harsh, I'll usually pick dull. This just kind of hurt my ears. There's a good song here though I think.

Bad Boys at Bat Mitzvahs - I like the music a good bit, but it somehow feels a bit stagnant. Maybe some tempo changes?

Anothony Butterfield - Interesting choice. You nail that old sound for the most part, but somehow the drums don't live up to it and end up sounding fakey, though I'm not sure why, as they aren't particularly bad samples. Maybe it's the panning? Good song though.

Dejected Motives - I should note that I'm one of those weirdos who hates autotune. So, obviously, I just plain don't like this.

It was good to hear that one review that i got so far- im well aware of my poor recording capabilties- they are limited- It is alot of work to record a song alone. (Drums, guitar, bass, synth, vocals, as well as writing and mixing.) -its alot to focus on for just one guy, but i very much enjoy doing it and always want to improve. Next time it will sound better, i promise. Thanx for listening. ('The Flight & the Grand Design')

Just a quick reminder, as I am won't to do, that your contribution to the lyrics thread for this fight is very much appreciated.

On another note, OH MY GOD WHAT A BIG FIGHT! I'm going to review, but I just might have to do it in stages. At the moment, it's bed time for little French Professors...

I got really excited with this and wrote recorded and submitted in 1 day. Should've spent a little longer with the complexity but i was going for a video game feel to the instruments. Really dig what you've done. :D

reviews, his last few days
all ratings from 1-5, because I don't want to rip Jast off
TOO bad ;) If you feel you were dealt a crap hand in these reviews,
you may be right; I'm listening on cheap speakers in a mobile dark room.

5- rox.
4- better than avg.
3- ok.
2- not so ok.
1- sux.

*AG Beats, Victor Walters, and MC
I dunno about this... it's even more talky than most rap.
I think I like my MC's to bring more solid rhythm

3-writing- not a fan of the talk, but beatboxing is great
4-performance-at least you pulled off what you were going for
4-production-even though I don't like it, it's still not offensive

*Anomaly Jonez ft. Third Nipple Music
it's like a sexier Gnarls Barkley!

4-writing-sounds great, not too catchy though
5-performance-rocking vox
4-production-good sound, some distortion that doesn't work

*Anthony Butterfield
OMG, this is prettier than my first girlfriend! Wait, she was pretty damn hot.
Maybe it's only prettier than Yanni.

4-writing-I dislike this song a lot, stylistically, and I hate that it's going to be in my head for DAYS.
4-performance-well done on the vox
3-production-I know you can't realistically pull this off without MIDI, but it sounds like it.

*Bad Boys At Bat Mitzvahs
did you hire Corb Lund?

3-writing-chorus doesn't stick out from verse much
4-performance-you pulled off a decent country song
4-production-then you recorded & mixed it well

*Berkeley Social Scene
not at your best, I think

3-writing-the usual BSS
2-performance-sometimes certain notes go the same way as last week's milk, and should be replaced.
3-production-pretty good overall, slightly overbearing guitar brings it down a bit.

*BGM
I think I like this more than I thought I did

4-writing-very easy to listen to without being boring
5-performance-well done, good voice & guit
5-production-there aren't any criticisms I can think of here

*Billy and the Psychotics
you two have become my favourite "musical couple"

4-writing-stuff is what it should be
5-performance-it was the bass that put it over a 4
4-production-maybe give yourself another point, I feel like I've been BLT-Bombed.

*Samuel Shoop
this beat software is starting to sound familiar...

4-writing-not quite incredible, but I like it.
5-performance-great voice for this style
4-production-not sure how to be constructive with what I can't put my finger on...

*Deetak
one of your better ones

3-writing-the syncopated guitar needs a little something to "give it roots"
5-performance-your voice is getting much better
4-production-stuff is where it should be

*Dejected Motives
indeed.

1-writing-if you're going to do that with the vox, the rest of your track has to be incredible to keep from getting boring.
1-performance-um... good mouse-clicking? :P
3-production-the vox are fighting over eq space with the synth strings

*Ebola Cide
I can't believe you used those goddamned chimes.

4-writing-decent flow, and better beat than most rap. Those toms need to lead to something, though.
4-performance-vocal delivery is a great match for the song
4-production-my non-musical friends might not pick this out of a hip hop mix

*Egg Nog Adam
this makes me want chicken

4-writing-great southern groove
4-performance-well pulled off
2-production-the drums need to be louder for this.

*Flight & Grand Design
this makes me want pizza pops

3-writing-good job, but still standard poprock
4-performance-nice drums ;)
4-production-nicely mixed

*Hillbilly
bummer about the noise

2-writing-1:00 doesn't leave much room for song
3-performance-sounds like you pulled off what you were going for
1-production-was this recorded very quiet, then gained/compressed? Snoodge around in the help section for a way to record louder and reduce the noise floor

*Hostess Mostess
now I want potato chips

4-writing-I'm always surprised at what you can do when you step away from the synths
4-performance-love the vocal layering
3-production-sampled hihats are a bastard to deal with

*Jeffrey Davis
this makes me want to re-read huckleberry finn

1-writing-traditional melody, could use a bridge or something
2-performance-there was whistling too!
2-production-you got 'er mic'ed

*Juliet's Happy Dagger
this sounds like a band whose name I don't recall

4-writing-those full-band accents really make the song work
4-performance-I like hearing chicks sing in rock bands.
3-production-vox up.

*King Arthur
you don't sound old

5-writing-a very well put together song, reminiscent of Neil Young.
5-performance-killer AND tasteful solo
4-production-stuff is where it should be,

*King Ginger
aww, I thought I was in for some Tool

3-writing-not bad
3-performance-your rap voice is quite nerdcore
2-production-beat is good, but the vox need to be on top

*MC Who Izzy
I don't know who this is

2-writing-needs some variation
3-performance-I *think* the vocals were delivered ok...
1-production-either there was a brainfart somewhere between writing and posting, or you actually need to be told to turn the vocals up. A lot.

*Mind Map That
heh, I usually don't pay much attention to lyrics, but these are kinda good, in a cutesy way

4-writing-well put together, for how minimalist it feels
4-performance-good vocals, reminds me of PUSA
4-production-sounds good

*National Front Bottom
I have a funny feeling that Beavis & Butthead would have loved this

4-writing-reminds me of something Dog Fashion Disco would do
3-performance-the accent works, it's funnier when you say fuck.
3-production-stuff sounds like it's close to where it should be

*Notorious F.A.P.
I have no idea what to make of this

2-writing-comically offensive lyrics may be the closest thing to saving this
2-performance-I hope to someday be that intoxicated with no repercussions
2-production-some stuff isn't where it should be, but I like the autotuning at the end

*Odoriferous Valley
did you just reference my ass crack?

3-writing-better than I thought at first.
3-performance-falsetto notes went a bit sideways, good guitar
4-production-sounds good, production-wise

*Paco Del Stinko
I have no idea how you did it, but this sounds INCREDIBLE on my $9 speakers in an empty plywood closet

3-writing-well put together, but overused melody
5-performance-screamin solo, and one of my favourite Paco tracks
5-production-I hope it doesn't sound like shit for everyone else...

*Planets
more chick-rock!

4-writing-very Cher, very 80's. like it.
4-performance-nice synth accents
4-production-sounds great

*sep
am I just too old for this?

2-writing-at least it wasn't just a loop
3-performance-the synthbass riff was awesome, till the rest of the song started
2-production-vocals need EQing, tuning & mixing. there's software for all that.

*Styop Quoons
OOOH! album art!

2-writing-got a bit samey, needs some variation
3-performance-a few vocal sidewayses
4-production-finally, someone who knows where the vox should be

*Synfonyc
this makes me want drugs.

2-writing-needs some variation
2-performance-not a fan of the vocals
2-production-sounds like your moving to/away from the mic

*Torrentz.eu
Ice-T meets Prodigy? nice.

4-writing-love the chorus
5-performance-good voice for rap, and the chorus was sweet
4-production-my only request is that you please talk to Paco.

*the Yyarrell Brothers Band
beautifully dirty

3-writing-some catchy hooks, but the riff got a bit old
4-performance-pulled it off nicely
3-production-I don't know what trick the pros use to keep guit distortion from muddying the vocal distortion, byt that's not it

whew. that was a large fight.

Wow..1st off you guys are totally awesome! This is such a cool site, I love the idea and endless possiblities. I listen and review a lot of instrumental music but this really got me going..I love it..it's like a box of chocolates!!
2nd I have very little techinical and production skills, slowly I'm becoming my own engineer so I can only say what I like and if it did anything for me...3rd I have the attention span of a house fly so I'm going to have to break up these reviews.
So here are a couple from tonight :

AG Beats, Viktor Walters, and Nate C - strange, strange but the thing is, it's interesting, you have this tone in your voice that is very interesting, not sure about the story, but the beauty of it is, made me listen twice just to figure it all out. didn't happen but cool trip anyways.

AntBut - I like it, soft and mellow, great melody, drifting by like a summer breeze and it reminds me of the song too. I really like the changes in the music, nicely done.

Bad Boys at Bat Mitzvahs- It's got this bouncy country vibe to it, hard not to move and smile while listening, good job.

More later,

Ms. Jonez

PS looking foward to next week's theme..though the only french I know is " french fries and crepes" but I'm going to be on it like a fat kid at a cupcake stand. ;p AJ

Typical Victorian. Always having to think up nancy-boy ways of saying chips and shit. Doesn't matter if you drizzle them with jews and cover the bastards with rocket - they're still chips.

And BTW - it is not a freaking "cantaloupe" - it's a rockmelon.

Typical pompous arrogance massacring as intellectual superiority.

What's wrong with being fat or ignorant?

As long as I have google and utube nothing will be a mystery to me..so at any point and time I accept being ignorant because it can be undone, thus so with being fat.

Sorry your solutions to being a valid person are not so easily obtained.

I have to go google common french words to use in my song now..all will be settled on the battle field.

it is stagnant... there are no changes... it even flippin fades out at the end... what a lazy bastard i was... did i just record one bar and loop that thing? yeah, i did...

i will go out on a limb and tell you: there is no chorus. it is two verses stuck together with some diddling in the middle. the chord progression doesn't change once the entire song.
i honestly dont know who corb lund is... just googled... wow, that's a canadian cowboy if ive ever seen one.

I keep wanting to do something funny, but it just doesn't really happen. It always ends up being pseduofunny or serious. I felt like I managed to insert some funny lines in our song, but felt a little sad I couldn't find a way to insert 'get your ass to mars'.
