Berkeley Social Scene
sounding a little too cacophonous in the intro. i really like the dynamics of the song. the voice gets a little hammy here and there, but overall a great performance.

Billy and the Psychotics
quite a songsmith you are. your bass melodies seem a bit off in places. great voice. i love the attack on the guitar in the solo.

The Chocolate Chips
so much fun. reminds me of late ween's pop ditties. VOTE

i smell hamburgers. i know that is not a review. but it is an honest reaction. interpretation is up to you. you are a big boy. you can probably glean wisdom from nonsense. or enlighten me on the psychic message this song sent me. of course there's always the possibility there's a beef patty being consumed within smellshot but out of earshot or eyeshot as i write this. plus! sick solo and breakdown as always.

Hoglen & Wages
overall this kinda drags. lots of good things in here, though. phasered/chorused backup vocals. nylon strings. doomy hum-a-longs. cool phrasing in the main vocal. tambo.

James Owens
slightly pythony pop. well written. i like this kind of wordplay and vocal. i'd prefer a stronger mix. VOTE

John and Ken and Sam
i like the aggressive bass. there's something a little springsteeny about the tune which is a turnoff for me.

Klownhole
this sounds... unrehearsed. and there are weird dropouts? i like you, but i probably prefer other parts of your catalog significantly more.

Paco del Stinko
this is a great track. your voice is a bit quakey for the style, but it's a curiosity, not a detriment. great riffs. nice stuff. VOTE

Public Porking
another experiment that is either gone wrong or simply unfinished. notes: the sampler came onto this at the very end. so the vocals were recorded without any pitch reference. in retrospect i probably should have re-tracked the drums and vocals after recording the sampler. then it might go together. also it is really repetitive.

it sounds very chamomile. i think i ordered the chai. did i order chai or earl grey? i don't know but this is definitely chamomile. have a taste. is there lavender in there? i smell lavender but i don't taste it. i wanted the chai. i might have ordered earl grey but i meant chai. either way this cup of tea is not mine.

Berkeley Social Scene - Definitely one of my favorite BSS tunes. It’s crazy, I love the manic energy, the odd changes, the all around weirdness. I’d like to hear the lead vox stronger in the mix or maybe doubled, and I think you could have gone crazier with it. I especially like the stumbling piano. Everything fits and doesn’t at the same time. VOTE

Billy and The Psychotics - I hear stuff like this from ya’ll and I really think you should be putting an album together and putting this stuff on tour. If you got on that festival circuit there, it could go over like gangbusters. I’m just saying. Consider a career in being rock stars.VOTE

The Chocolate Chips - Especially nice vocal performance. It does seem to have a bit of the old Beckspiration there, but I like the arrangement and its pleasant. Anti climatic but still a keeper. VOTE

Glenny - I don’t like this right away and then don’t like it more as it goes on. You did not just use what’s your sign jokes in your lyrics. oi. At about the 2:15 mark I checked how long this is then sighed. At about 3:20 or so you decide to be entertaining finally, thanks.

Hoglen & Wages - Ok, another 5 minute long song? Seriously? Naw, it’s alright, I like this one. At first I thought it might be too heavy handed but you won me over. It was mainly the vocals, but also the arrangement altogether. After a shaky start it really clicks in, I like the melody that emerges, good stuff. Then suddenly your Ween just cause you use that vocal effect? I don’t think so. I still like it. VOTE

James Owen - Man, I can’t get past those cheesy synth sounds. On a second listen, I’m trying to find out what you’re getting at lyrically, and I didn’t, even though I was intently listening. The first several lyrics are a lead up to something but I missed the punchline. So, since it’s canned and flat musically, it relies on it’s humor to carry it, and I’m having difficulty focusing on what you’re talking about, so, I didn’t like it.

John and Ken and Sam - Nothing really sticks out as an element I don’t care for but this song just does not grab me. The individual parts are great but the song is just kinda there, I have no styrong feelings one way or the other.

Klownhole - I really like the way this one starts, just explodes with those cool 60’s keys and fuzzy guitar, it’s great. Uh oh, then you start losing me. It’s getting flat. It’s fizzling out. It’s still going. Another tune where I like the individual parts alot but the song overall doesn’t grab me.

Paco Del Stinko - I may have to accuse you of phoning it in here. I have pretty middling feelings about this one. Familiar Del Stinko sounds, nothing offensive or “gone wrong” but also nothing either lyrically or musically is keeping my attention.

Public Porking - You definitely got my attention right away. I like the energy and the oddness. It’s too redundant to last 2 minutes though. I would have recommended going with your best and most coherent lyrical turns and cutting many others to keep it at 1, and then done a dramatic change or ednded it. Also needs an ending.

Sep - Mouth harp is the greatest thing in the world. I want to vote for it just because I like the mouth harp and harmonica. But I lose interest pretty quickly. A story song that flat lines, I totally lost track of/interest in what’s going on here.

WreckdoM - I had my doubts at times while we were working on it but it really came together in the end there. I especially like the ghost voice.

James Owens A lot happens in the short time, I couldn't believe the time readout when I first looked. Part Beatles music hall tune, part TV show theme, I wish I were smart enough to get the message. That said, the music is fantastic and superbly arranged. The melodies flow and blend wonderfully. Great stuff, should (better!) fair well in the voting.

Two totally different perspectives. That's why I love Song Fight! But I should know by now that not everybody reads the pre-fight, review, or Ye Olde Lyric Marte threads.

I'm actually surprised we did as well as we did, from the reviews. Poor Dee was fighting a sick, but powered through it to get the vocals done. I wish I was that tough. I need soup, pampering and a bj if I even break an eyelash.
