Yes? I mean, it was predictable in the sense that the listener expected it. But pop music has to first meet (or satisfy) the listener's expectations, right? Then you can mix it up by putting a cherry on top and breaking out into a little soft-shoe routine.

Since you asked the about the drop, I'd go on to say that my modernly-conditioned brain was expecting bigger transition. My theory is that in the age of highly compressed music (sans dynamic range), modern recording and decent sound systems, composers have increasingly leveraged the frequency domain in crafting transitions with gusto. Think of all the times you hear a bandpass filter applied to vocals when the music drops out. Or going the other way, a pause and then some massive 4 octave supersaw synth kicks in.

This conditioning (curse you, pop music!) made me thing something else was coming. A legato viola or... something else non-percussive and rich in harmonics. That's not to say that the song would benefit from additional instrumentation; adopting such conventions would cater more explicitly to the listener's expectations, sure. But every time you do that you get one step closer to cliche.

Therein lies the paradoxical truism: the more expressly you deliver on the expectations of the genre, the more generic you become.

I tried to come up with a fabulous generic/Jon Eric joke here but... I got nothin'.

Reviewsies, part twosies. Again, written as I was listening. Yeah, that means those of you who turned in 90-second songs got shortchanged a bit. Sorry. I'll probably post more thoughts as relisten throughout the week. Here we go...

Fitzroy
That guitar sounds like you hid the amp under a couch cushion fortress. The drums seem to be going for punk, but they come out sounding more like polka. Maybe if the hi-hat were louder? Hey, at least your vocals are loud and clear, front a center. This song could use a "chorus element," something to make the chorus pop out from the verses, like a harmony vocal, a second guitar, or a change-up in the drums or strumming pattern.

Paco del Stinko
I like that combo of crunchy guitars and a driving swing beat. The lead vocal is loud and clear, but it rings a little too smarmy. Your bass sounds nice and fat, while the individual notes remain distinct - great job, there. Are you using a real drum kit now? That ride cymbal sounds like a real deal. Of the entries I've listened to so far, this one seems to be the one to beat.

Havarti on Rye
Immediate deduction of points because your band name made me hungry. Is that a robot pirate? I like the choppy integration of the sampled piece, but the liberal pitch bending is making me uncomfortable. Parts of this remind me of Kraftwerk, other parts strike me as unique, though I admit I don't listen to much of this type of music. That stabby bassline is pretty cool, but by the 3-minute mark I'm getting sick of it. The staticky vocals also wear out their welcome with me. I think maybe I just don't have the vocabulary to say anything useful about this for you. Sorry.

The Ghost Within
There's a lot of momentum in this song! The first few seconds, with that staccato riff, made me think of Metallica (I've never really liked Metallica), then the more sustained guitar part comes in and it sounds more modern. Unfortunately, I got taken out of the spell when the vocals started. There's something about the way your vocals sit in the mix that just doesn't fit, and it makes the whole thing sound a little too amateurish. That heavy metal throat scream thing is also a tough sell for me. I'm guessing a lot of people will be happy to vote for this, but it's just a little too scattershot and rough around the edges for me.

Losers' Circle ("Spud updates too quickly" edition):
Jake DeLorey
Is it just me, or is this not far from the vibe that Fitzroy was going for? I like the big booming rhythm guitar and how the lead guitar doesn't appear to be fighting with it for space. I like the harmonies on the vocals. I like the drummer shaking it up with various fills and that tricky dancing on the ride bell in the chorus. Dumb lyrics, but when you rock this hard, who needs clever lyrics? Boy howdy, I wish I could vote for this. If you'd been on time, you'd probably be mopping the floor with us.

Klownhole
I was at a live show earlier this week, and in between sets the house speakers were playing a really eclectic mix of music, some alt-country, some hard rock, some blues. And then there was one song that was kind of ambient-electronic, I guess? I couldn't really hear it all that well; all I could hear was this disembodied robot voice, and I couldn't make out the words over the crowd. I nearly had a panic attack. And then the intro to your song reminded me of that. So, yay. The song really gets going a little over a minute in. I think this demands a more bombastic delivery on some of the campier lines, like "That's how you can tell it's the name of the song / Yeah!" Is this a live recording? I don't hear a crowd, but you appear to be talking to one, which kind of trips my "these guys are annoying" circuit. But you entered a 10-minute mock metal song that satirizes the idea of crowd control, so I guess you don't care about being annoying. Honestly, I'm not your target audience, and I don't have any experience making the kind of music you make, so I'm guessing there's nothing useful you can glean from reading my review. I bet you're not even reading this anyway, which is why I opened with an anecdote about a crowded club I was in this weekend. I could probably type whatever here. I went to a restaurant in Belize once called the Purple Space Monkey, which doesn't have anything to do with anything, but this song is still going, so I'll keep typing, because hey, why not? I sure do like havarti. Maybe I'll get some from the grocery store when I get off work in a few minutes. Cool song, bro. Yeah, cool song.

My Votes Went To:

Caravan Ray
R. Mosquito
Paco del Stinko

Just some general comments upon first listen of the tunes. Congratulations to all that got this in on time. I have learned a lesson and will be on my toes from now on. I never thought I would see the day when the hour stated next to the deadline day would come into play. Lesson learned. If I'm thinking Zig I should be prepared to zag. Wig, wag etc.

Let the Carnage begin. Last three standing at the end get my vote.

Brad Plaid Band Entering the ring first we have The Brad Plaid Band. Starting off with some pep. Like your kick sound, but could use some reverb on the drums. I like your vocal delivery. Its sort of the delivery I was hoping for, but my aggressive vocals just dont sound legit so I scratched them. You do a much better job. Nice drum break at 1:04. This is short and sweet, just the way these heavier tunes should be. No time to get bored. A nice sounding submission.

Caravan RayA big Fan of Caravan Ray, you never know what style he`s gonna lay on ya from week to week. LOve the layered vocals, everything sounds so pristine. A headphone masterpiece. A really nice mix. Wow, nothing bad to say about this one except its to short. Think I may have another listen and pay some close attention to the vocals and mix. Great job CR.

FitzroyOh real drums!!! That should be a vote automatically. Its got my head bopping, and your voice is quite suited to this style. I smell essence of The Dead Milkmen. Another real short tune, but again, short is the way to go on the faster/punkier style of tune. Not a bad submission. Hats off for recording off the floor. Real drums are soon to be on my horizon.

The Ghost WithinAggressive is the word of the day it seems. Real nice balance in this. Your drums sound good. Just intricate enough without over powering. Guitars sound superb. Your main vocals dont sit well in the mix for me, but your chorus sounds awesome. Creepy yet rocking. Coming back to the normal voice makes it sound evn weaker when sitting next that great chorus vocal sound. Just a little bit more depth sonically. The chorus really keeps the song pumping.

4 have entered, 3 shall move on. Caravan Ray lay's back as the three more aggressive tunes battle it out. top three moving on to face Grill SHots will be Caravan Ray, The Ghost Within, and Brad Plaid.

Grill ShotsGrill SHot comes in with a smidge of funk and extra dose of Hip Hop. Vocals sound really nice in this. Everything does for the most part, although the scratching is a bit much on a few parts. A real tight production all aropund, and good enough to send Brad Plaid Band home. Beasties lawyers are coming after ya though.

Havarti on Rye6 minutes eh? Well here goes nothing. Robot dog? nice. I'm waiting for a "Mars.Needs. Women", or a "put the needle on the record when the drumbeat goes like this". Track sounds great. Lots going on but not necesaarily distracting. Now I am having flashbacks of playing with the propellerhead demo way back in the day. Okay half way through this. This is where my personal taste comes into play. I find things are getting repetetive. I am trying to focus on the subtleties, but its to much. Over all this track sounds great, but does not keep my interest. QUality submission though.

hillbillyLets see if Hillbilly can make a dent in our top three. A "real" recording, always a breath of fresh air. Just sitting and listening, thats a good thing. Well although its a bit lo-fi, this song is nicley done. A bit to abrupt on the ending, but this production was very enjoyable. Here's to the Hillbilly!

Hip Hop AnonymousWell, I threw these guys a vote last time. Really liked their production last time. This time is the same. Track sounds great, not big on the flow of this one. Look forward to your next submission, but this one wont be able to surpass the Grill SHots track IMO.

Jeebas JonesA long time friend and collaborator, this in IMO is one of his strongest efforts to date. The production on this compared to your past efforts (not including Scientific 7, and Fill in the Blank) has taken a big leap forward. ALways good to get other people involved to, and the addition of the female voice is cool. Your lead electric needs to be tightened up in parts. its all over the place , especially on your extended break. This gives me a Steve Miller - Dance Dance Dance vibe. A great submission but not enough for my vote this week. Thanks for your solo on my late submission this week.

Jon EricAaaaah gin, my favorite. A beautiful piano sound and performance, well thought out lyrics. Been awhile since I heard a gin soaked, heartbreaking ballad. Maybe some more strings or some sort of pad to fill up the background a bit. Something seems a bit thin, although as the song progresses it gets fuller as it ramps up. A great submission!

King ArthurUp next we have King Arthur. Guitars sound really nice in this mix. Not really kean on the vocal placement and melody on this one. Sort of dulls it up a bit. Theres no real hook that keeps me invested in the tune. The sound of the mix is well balanced and nothing is competeing for space. Hope to hear some more from ya next fight though.

Mr. Nakazawa's Book of Surprises Right away I cant get into this. A smidge sour on my ears. Lyrics are good, but not enough time went into performance and production. Just to loose all around.

My Social UniformAlright, looking forward to this one. Dug your submission last week. This is another good one, although I dont find your vox sit quite as nice as last time. Your dub step break is cool, although it does not sit nice in the mix, at least to my ears. WOuld like to hear the individual elements of that break a little clearer amongst each other. Looking forward to your next one.

Paco del StinkoLike it right away, got that twanged out reverb guitar in the bg, accompanied by some noce full distortion. Not to mention a quality vocal delivery channeling your inner Danzig. This track sounds awesome. Great energy, great structure. Nice little bridge in the middle. This is going in my permanent songfight folder. Nice sound on the solo. This is good enough to decapitate the Brad Plaid band

So we have a new top 3......Caravan Ray, The Ghost Within, and Paco del Stinko

R. Mosquito Last but not least we have R.Mosquito with another heavier track, that so far sounds wicked. Love that guitar sound!!Bass punctuates nicely. I would like to hear the drum (kick specifically) a bit more in the mix, but really this is quality. Great vocal delivery and performance. Its a tight one, but not sure if I can chuck a vote your way this week, but it was good tune.

So, votes this week go to Caravan Ray, The Ghost Within, and Paco del Stinko.

Great fight gang, hopefully next time I will be a bit more aware of looming deadlines and be able to throw my hat in the ring properly.

PS. Just read Caravans post. One mans shite is another mans.....well maybe that doesnt work. There were to many good things about that song to call it shite. Thanks for the drunkin kind words caravan. Ialso though my song was shite. There were some good qualities about it, but I was not happy with my lyrics, vox performance, and vocal mix. They were all rushed and not very well thought out.

yes, real drums! Vote for me!!! "punk rock girl" definitely came to mind while editing.

you are not far off with the amplifier, only it was the pillows from my bed... It was the only way my sub-par microphone wouldn't pick up my heavy strumming, and the sound from my acoustic guitar... Yes it was an acoustic guitar underneath all that distortion. As for the drums, the problem I had was getting the bass drum recorded loud enough to be audible. This was remedied by putting the mic directly in front of the open bass drum. I am still learning all the bells and whistles of reaper daw since I switched from the antiquated recording software I had been using. Hopefully my following submissions will be recorded a little better. I was going to try and get a friend to do a little lead guitar, but scheduling conflicts put an end to that, it may have cut down on the repetitiveness.

Fitzroy:
Cool man, yeah, Green Day used to be cool, Op Ivy were too :)
Fair enough, I only suggested harmonies because its something I happen to enjoy. If we do end up doing a collab, I could do a few backing harmonies to whatever we came up with...
Ah, cool, well thats interesting man, its not often you hear an acoustic guitar with distortion. It had an interesting sound, I may have to try that myself one time...

Jon Eric:
Damn, man, well fair enough, I wish you a speedy and healthy recovery! If you need some guitar tracks put down, feel free to PM me and I can see what I can do. I don't only do heavy music :P

And its fair enough, I don't really ever aim my tracks at anyone other than myself, so they can have somewhat limited appeal :P In fact, sometimes when I listen back, they don't even appeal to me.

Havarti:
Thats an interesting way of putting it :P

Jake DeLorey: Hmm, my vocals have always been my weak point. Perhaps if I were to do a song where the entirety of the lyrics had backing vocals, I might achieve the correct level of power, but somehow I doubt that would sound good... I'm working on it but progress is slow. Guitars played through an old (but lovely) ashdown with a 20 pound microphone I got from maplins about five years ago. But it does the trick, until I can afford an SM57. Thanks for the vote man!

I am using Ultrabeat that came with Logic Pro 9. I was pretty happy with the drums this time around. Although I spent to much time on them. Really helped the tune though. Still not getting the kick I want, but I think its just going to take some practice. I have been watching videos advertising the new edition of Komplete 9, and I'm drooling over the drums available in it. Its not my priority though. The hope is to start recording real drums...real soon.

No seriously, I've never been nor considered myself a vegetarian or a vegan. I'm really not sure where you got that idea. Maybe because you just think that everyone in Austin is a tree-hugging enviro-hippie?

I like the Jake de Lorey song. All the rest are fucking crap.
OK.

THat was my preliminary assessment. And, if I may say - just between you and me - I think my Secretary may have been drunk when she typed that out. It is so hard finding good help nowadays. Lucky she bangs like a dunny door in a gale.

Anyway,

Back to the matter at hand:

THese reviews are in order of preference:

R Mosquito: This is my favourite song

THe Ghost Within - This is frikking awesome. Much better than that Jake whathsis name idiot (ok - you will be getting the idea now...my opinions change).

Whatever - this is freaking awesome...good job ghosts.

Fitzroy: I like it ...because I like it. You are pretty shit really. I just like it.

Haravrti on Rye: Yeah what the fucke ever ...Im drunk. I like this

King Arthur: Good to see you back. Or is it?!?!? You are a far more wittier songwriter than I will ever be. I don't think the evil side of me does want to see you back. Whatever. Great song. I actually think it is one of your best. And I have heard a lot of yours. Great job.

Paco del Stinko: This is why I love Paco del Stinko. Yes - you can get repetitive - but when it is as good as this - why the fuck not. I am naked and more than partially aroused.

Hillbilly: THat is pretty cool. I love the song. I love the recording. Just the lead vox is a bit messy. Small complaint though. that was awesome.

Jeebas Jones - Yeah. That is a pretty good song . Well done. I wont listen to it again

Jon Eric - ahhh where do I put you Joneric. you do what you de well -but you also know that I would rather stick a fork in my eye than listen to Billy Joel. And you know that I am too polite a gentleman to tell to to take your middle-of -the -road piano doodleings and jam them up your coit. Sorry. it is a genre thing.

Grill Shots - I s this Smalltown Mike? Sounds like him. Sounds good - but dull song. Sing about sex or death. Not food.

Brad Plad Ok. But a bit like Fitzroy. I can't not like this - but it is still a bit crap.

Hip Hop Anonymous: What a horrible cliche! THis is awful. Truly awful. Have you ever had an original thought? When you do - come back to us.

My Social Uniform - this is fucking awful

Mr Nakawazawa: No. Sorry. FFS Niv - if you are going to join up with den - let her sing. She is a great singer - you are a great lyricist - work it that way. Sorry. I didn't like this at all.

Quick, un-thought out comments. I'd be more than glad to clarify or expound if you really want me to. Cheers!

Brad Plaid Band - Good dumb fun. Like a polished version of something I might have done on 4-track 20 years ago.

Caravan Ray - This is good. It would fit nicely on the Lady Ca-Ca Christmas album, too. Undercooked, but tasty.

Fitzroy - I'd be glad to play bass for you when needed. Evidence that you don't need production to sell feel.

The Ghost Within - Like an Eddie Van Crayon riff into some current day pop-punk band with Bowie singing between bridge troll vocals. Work on your vocal pitch but the playing is tight.

Grill Shots - Clean and lean production. Distinctive voice that hasn't been around a lot lately. Good work and not straying far from family fare. More safe than sleazy, but that's ok. I'd like a key change somewhere.

Havarti on Rye - Barbara Bush eating a hot dog. She's probably one of those people that put ketchup on them, too. And that's wrong. I like the synth patches, especially the blurpy ones.

hillbilly - Very distinctive. At near two minutes, this is epic for you, too. I'm not as fresh as I sound when I say bring a notebook to jail and fill it with lyrics.

Hip Hop Anonymous - This is well done but I'm glad it's short. Not because it's bad or anything, but it just loops and repeats too much for me.

Jeebas Jones - This is as repetitive as the prior song, but I dig this more. I am a wah master, and that wah sounds great, even if played straight.

Jon Eric - Bigger bottom end, please. Nice round and round here. My wish list also includes building vocals and perhaps some soaring strings.

King Arthur - Been wonderin' about you. The vocal is a bit loose, but it goes right where it should, mostly. The bridge could use a little love but I like the chorus.

Mr. Nakazawa's Book of Surprises - Too dissonant, it's out of tune and missing the (odd) mark. I get what it wanted to do, but I don't think it did it.

My Social Uniform - I feel like I'm in Europe and I'm going out to some kind of club that isn't really the kind of club I would go to. If I went to clubs. Good vocal performance, song wanders a bit.

Paco del Stinko - I'm pleased with the mix on this, another song about some fictional devil type thing. Real amps, as always! Well, except for bass.

R. Mosquito - The drums lurch a bit, but I dig the gothy feel to this a lot. Not that I am gothy, but this has a very vampiric vibe to it. Very good, if incomplete.

late entries:

Jake DeLorey - I used to try, and fail, to make music like this a long time ago. I can now do the trebly noodle guitar, though. Write me for help next time. Good feel here.

Klownhole - I dig the atmosphere here, but would like some more focus. Somehow, that would be a better way to get lost, if that makes any sense.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.
