people who try to game contests when there's no prize confuse the hell out of me, if there was a $1000 prize or something I would understand ... wouldn't you rather win because people actually liked your song?

There are 87k students on my campus and 2500 music students. It's real easy for me to hang out by the labs and ask people, who already know me/come to my performances/follow one of the groups that I'm in, to vote - especially the ones who voted last week.

Re: How is asking for your fans to vote against the rules?
It's great to ask them to listen to the fight and vote for their favorites. Song Fight loves an audience.
But when you ask them to vote for you (friend-flooding) that breaks the "don't be a dick" rule.

A wise man once told me: "Win a few times, get it out of your system. Eventually you realize winning and the votes are pretty meaningless, especially if it's happening because you told people to go vote for you. It's really just about making music."

Re: How is asking for your fans to vote against the rules?
It's not personal, Mr. Lucas. I checked the votes at the deadline, and you had 12. When I went to post last night, you had 38. I got curious. Checking the votes, I saw 56 votes in a row coming from the same IP block some time during the day. IN A ROW. I looked up the owner of the IP block. It's Miami Dade. That pointed to your involvement. I searched for Darrick Lucas Songfight on google and was directed to your Facebook page. There, instead of the preferred phrase "listen to the songs and vote for the best", were lines like "Now if I could just get 99 more votes - that ought to really piss em off!" and "the regulars got all huffy for me winning - so this week I want to crush them!". I was considering rolling back the vote to the time of the deadline, but this pushed me over the edge. You weren't disqualified for too many votes. Your votes were disqualified for being late. If the flood wasn't so fucking obvious, I might have let it go. When I let you skate in after the deadline the first time, I was a great guy. Now I am a grumpy old man. Go figure.

Re: How is asking for your fans to vote against the rules?
By the way, just so you realize how fair I am, I also eliminated the votes for everyone else that came in after the deadline as well. Most of those came from Miami Dade as well cuz, you know...

It's Song Fight, not Popularity Fight. Do you want to get better at your craft, and measure that via the Song Fight mechanism? If not, fuck off.
Sure, we don't go whole-hog and randomize the names every time the page loads. That wouldn't be much fun, and we want to trust that the participants are playing along in good faith.
You are difficult to be nice to, Darrick.

Okay, then how about this:
Darrick:
Take a fucking hint and try to have at least a modicum of restraint and respect for the community that you so desperately want to be a part of.

Can I vote more than once?
We really wish you wouldn't. Voting multiple times doesn't really get you anything does it? There's no prize or anything after all, and what satisfaction is there in bragging rights if you cheated to get them?

Once again trying to be "nice" has netted you nothing but grief. I'm glad I didn't know about the deadline of the first submission or I would have gone all fluffy on him.Spud wrote:If the flood wasn't so fucking obvious, I might have let it go. The most important question here is "when did 'game' become a verb''?
'I believe we can win' ...

Assuming that you will accept the OED as a reference, I would say quite some time ago:j$ wrote:The most important question here is "when did 'game' become a verb''?

Re: How is asking for your fans to vote against the rules?
I never questioned the accuracy, just the chronology. "Game" as a verb (despite Merriam Webster's assurances it has existed thus-ly since 1512) is to this day not familiar this side of the pond. 'Just helping out potential visitors to our fair lands, is all.Spud wrote:Assuming that you will accept the OED as a reference, I would say quite some time ago:j$ wrote:The most important question here is "when did 'game' become a verb''?

Not familiar to you, my good sir. Have you taken a poll? Or do you have a different word for that, too?
